I know Kevin Stemke has vitually no chance at beating out Tom Tupa for the punting duties this year (although with our offense, neither one will see the field a lot ).
But Stemke has out kicked Tupa two games in a row. Stats from Saturday's game:
Stemke:
3 punts, 46.7 yard average, long 60, all 3 punts inside the 20.
Tupa:
2 punts, 38 yard average, long 48, one punt inside the 20.
With field position so critcial, an additional 5 to 10 yards per kick is huge.
Stemke is good, there's no doubt about it. Tupa is a proven vet and stemke is not. Tupa was hand-picked by John Hall to be his holder and has a couple of seasons experience holding for Hall in New York. I say the chances of Stemke beating out Tupa are slim, but his 60 yard punts will get him in the door somewhere.

Side note, as this is a pre-season battle for position, I am moving this thread to the preseason forum.

also... Stemke on his last punt it went like 20 yards... and bounced and rolled like another 25 to 30... stats can be decieving.. Tupa's a vet... he'll be the guy.

Well Tupa didn't even play against Carolina so that's why Stemke outpunted Tupa for that game.
And one of Tupa's punts was at about our 45 or 50 so he had to make a pooch punt.
Like JF said, Hall wanted Tupa to come here because he said Tupa is the best holder he's ever had. Hall wanted Tupa last year but I guess SS's staff wanted to keep Barker.
Tupa can also provide a good passing attack on fake punts. He was Phoenix's starting QB for a few years, even when Buges was coaching them.
You have to take a lot of things into account when assessing the punting situation.
