Second Half/Game Observations

First of all, let me start by saying that we did not see the true Redskins team play tonight. We saw some (not all) of the starters play at the beginning and the 2nd-3rd-4th stringers play the remainder of the game. How the Skins did tonight is not really an indicator of how good/bad this team is.

That being said...and at the risk of pissing of DEHog again, here are my observations of the 2nd half and the game:

1. Losing Jansen is a big blow. If you're gonna lose a player of his calibre; however, it is better to lose him in the 1st preseason game rather than the last. At least now we can attempt to plug someone into his spot early and get him prepared to start for the season. Again, whomever it is will not likely fill Jansen's shoes...but at least they'll get a lot of reps before opening day.

2. I was impressed with the overall play of the defensive unit as a whole. Yes, they gave up some yards here and there (thanks Jimoh) but, on the whole, they did a fine job for the 1st game of the year.

3. I was not impressed with the offensive unit, however. These guys need more work....more reps. In time, I am sure they will play better.

4. I was very happy to see Sean Taylor pull down two INTs. Two things could have happened to him this year. (1) He could have started slowly and eventually gotten better as the year progressed. or (2) He could start strong. From tonight's performance, it looks like Taylor is going to start strong this year. On a side note, did you see Sean standing next to Lavar (with about 6:30 left in the game)?!?! Only then did I realize just how huge this kid is! It's amazing that one so big can have all that speed. I am really excited to see him play in the future!

5. Going back to the offense. They seemed to have an easier time running to the outside than running up the middle. Buges will help them out and they'll get better; however, they'll have to overcome losing Jansen.

6. Our first two QBs showed me very little. Hasselbeck came in and moved the offense...albeit against the opposing teams scrubs...but, at least he looked like he had better command of the offense.

7. I loved seeing Joe Gibbs roaming the sidelines!! (Did I already mention that before?)

8. I was extremely impressed with the minimal number of flags thrown against the Redskins! I expected a lot more for the 1st preseason game. Hey folks. It looks like these players are being coached!

All in all, tonight's game was solid. For the most part, I was pleased with the overall performance of the team...and I expect better things from them in the future.

The main things are Jansen & the penalties. I think Jansen will be back by week 3 the latest (think positive), this guy is an animal, the only thing that will keep him out the whole season, is if his whole leg gets cut off!

We had very few penalties, it's about time! The 2nd & 3rd string guys made most of them though.

As far as Taylor, I seen him next to Lavar, he's HUGE! I was impressed by the INTs, but who the heck is Matt Mauck????

I kinda think its irrellivent who Mauck is. Rather what Taylor did. He played exceptionally well and was in the right spots at the right time. That's why we drafted him. And I ruely believe this guy is gonna be a lot richer too. His contract is loaded with incentives. He came out of the gate strong and he will step up to the plate reguardless if its Mauck or Moss.

We've got Carolina next at FedEx and he should be a factor somehow or another in that game as well.

And yes, he is a monster for his position. All the better, if you ask me.

Mauck is a QB, not a WR! Of course they were great plays by him, but it was from a QB that won't even make the practice squad for Denver.

Al and John gave the impression that Mauck is the third-stringer and will make the roster. Were there other QBs that played last night?

Yes, Plummer, Kanell, Quinn & Mauck.

Ah, I forgot about Quinn.

I thought Mauck looked ok last night. I'm sure he'll find a place on some roster, or maybe get allocated to NFLEL.

Jansen

There is no way Jansen will be back by game 3. Ruptured achilles require surgery, then months of rehab.

my take on it is that when tim hasselbeck came in he came in and did well and the offense picked up as well.defensively they had spurts in there from time to time inwhich they will get better in time.as far as the other qb,s are concern they looked confused and they weren,t comfortable at all in the pocket but that will get better as well,i hope.now for jon jansen man i hate to see him tear up his achilles but it is what it is and they need to plug in another ot and continue on with the program-he will be tough to replace no doubt about it.sean taylor looked very solid all in all he will get even better with time also.last but not least joe gibbs, man that was like trying on the same pair of shoes you have stored in your closet for 12 years .awesome!
it still fits baby it put a big ole smile on this redskins fans face let me tell ya.
my overall grade for this first preseason game will be a (c)

I thought that both 'starting' QBs looked rough. I waas hoping that they would be a little more effective, considering that the gameplanning was pretty canned.

Defense, I thought, showed some promise. Still worried about the D-line, but a least they're getting some pressure into the backfield. Against the run, lots of holes for a quick back to break through.

Hassleback looked good, Gari Scott made several nice catches, and Sean Taylor--well, enough said.

Huge loss with Jansen going down, but we've certainly got the right coaching staff to get the best out of the other linemen, and replace him as best as possible.

Gibbs will be ripping them for the nine penalties tomorrow and the rest of the week.

All in all, I thought it was a good start to preseason--except for Jansen. I look to see the steady improvement that I know Gibbs and co. will get from this group.
