The Mets made two stunning trades Friday, acquiring Pirates righthander Kris Benson and Devil Rays righthander Victor Zambrano — and parting with Class AA lefthander Scott Kazmir, one of the game's top pitching prospects, in the deal with Tampa Bay.
Exclusive: Benson speaks on trade
Kris Benson speaks out about his trade from Pittsburgh to the Mets.
Benson was acquired with Class AA second baseman Jeff Keppinger in exchange for third baseman Ty Wigginton, Class AA lefthander Matt Peterson and infielder Jose Bautista, whom the Mets obtained from the Royals to facilitate the deal.
The price for Zambrano was Kazmir and Class AA righthander Jose Diaz. Zambrano came at a higher price because he will not be a free agent until after the 2007 season. Benson, a potential free agent, will amount to a two-month rental unless the Mets sign him long-term.
