With smoots contract up next year. What do yall think the skins are going to do? Will they be able to afford to keep him with the salary cap even though it seems like it gets larger every year. Or does it look like my favorite redskin will be a redskins no longer. What do yall think???

Counting On Smoot

It seems to me that they are counting on Smoot to be the Next shutdown corner so it would be very hard to me to beleive they won't try to resign him? Im sure their will be other who will be cut to make cap room like their are every year

Depends on his level of play this season, and Springs play also.

If Smoot stagnates and Springs gets injured we'll need to keep Smoot.

If Smoot gets better, we'll want to keep him.

If he doesnt improve and or declines and wants a crazy amount of money that wasn't equal to his level of play, then they'll let him shop.

I think we're going to keep him.

I hope we are going to keep him. I like his attitude. And I know this has nothing to do with football ability but he signed autographs for hours and hours at every free moment at the draft party. Where as Arrington seemed bothered to do it for 20 minutes!

I think his level of play is going to go WAY up this year. Seeing him play with that injury showed me he is the right kind of player. He just needed the right kind of coaching. Watch him. I bet he has a break out year! ;-)

I thik if Smoot turns into a shutdown corner ,like we all want him to, it would become very hard for the team to re-sign him. We already let one shutdown corner go and I dont think the Skin's would have cap space for Smoot if he demands a huge contract.

I think it is a higher probability that we will resign him next year if he DOESN'T become a shutdown corner, but if he remains a solidly above average corner, who is a good team leader.

Shutdown corners come along once in a while, and command 50-60 million. I can only think of a handful past and present that qualify as "shut down"

What we should do is try to resign him now for a fair value. Not have to over pay later. I remember when Stephen Davis was coming on we were too slow to getting him locked down to a long term contract and ended up paying through the nose. It's important to sign these guys while they are still on the way up.

He could be known as one of the premier corners in the league with his play this year. What he may lack in size he makes up for with heart. I know he was thrown at a lot more than champ last yr and years past but he has lead the team in INTs the past 3 years. The only thing that I think that can hold him back is a pass rush to put pressure on the qb to make bad throws in his direction. I really think that champs play has been on a decline in the past years and just used his reputation to his advantage. Dont get me wrong though he is one of the top corners if not the best corner. I just hope when or if Smoot gets the recognition that he will get from his play, doesnt allow use to resign him next year.

I love Smoot, but a "Shut down" corner he is not. Example Smoot vs. TO - I hate to say it but I don't think Greg Williams is going to make that call in the game. Smoot has excellent cover skills but he is just a bit under sized to jam the 6-3 220+ lb. WRs comming in to the league now. That being said... with Taylor, Bowen, & Iffy at safety, Smoot & Springs should do just fine. I do hope we keep Freddy at a reasonable price then focus on a top flight pass rusher to take some pressure off the DBs.

intuitively, that's usually a good strategy. however, you'll get players that will hold out in the middle of their contract. especially when one of their peers gets handed a fat contract. ty law comes to mind. from my perspective it looks like smooty's got a good head on his shoulders and is genuinely grateful to be a redskin. i really don't forsee any real problems locking him up (barring injury or major decline in his skills).

We have to keep him. Who better than Smoot to be our guy ? C'mon. He's our loudmouth. We need Smoot. We'll likely be feeling the loss of Bailey for a few years. To lose both would be tragic.

Yep I'm all about some freddy smoot. Smoot talks mad smack. He kind of reminds me of brian mitchell in that way. I'm sure that with a professional (as opposed to NCAA)level defensive scheme this year, his play and stock will be way up come seasons end.

At least he fired the Postons a few months ago. That alone should make resigning him a lot easier.

It should not be a problem. Each year the cap gets bigger and next year owners are counting on some of the money coming from their tv affiliates and sponsers. The NFL is looking into sponsers picking up some of the tab in some fashion.

This will be the continuation of our cap problems first Champ now...if Smoot has the pro-bowl year he will be hard to resign unless others redo their contract.
