Football Movie

Adam Sandler is re-making Burt Reynolds' football classic, "The Longest Yard".
In the original, a former star quarterback, Paul Crew, who has been kicked out of the NFL for fixing games, finds himself in prison after getting drunk and stealing a car. The warden runs a semi-pro team made up of his gaurds and has Crew put together a team of inmates to play the gaurds in an exhibition game. The original was very well done and had Ray Nitschke as one of the gaurds. Reynolds himself was a former Florida State quarterback.
As much as I loved the original, I don't know what to make of the remake. Sandler's comedies are good enough, but I can't picture him playing Paul Crew without making a mockery of the film. On the other hand, he has a wonderful supporting cast. Reynolds is back to play the coach and Chris Rock plays Caretaker, the team manager of sorts. If you are a professional wrestling fan, there is plenty of reasons to see the film, as Stone Cold Steve Austin, Bill Goldberg, Kevin Nash and Nathan Jones (who also played that guy who Brad Pitt killed in the beginning of "Troy") will be in the film as players, along with Brian Bosworth, former NFL-bust turned actor.
So anyway, I was wondering how people liked the original and how they feel about Sandler remaking it...

I am embarrased to say that I didn't see the original. I am however a huge Adam Sandler fan, and I look forward to seeing it.

The more I look into this the more excited I am because of the amazing supporting cast, although I am still worried about Sandler in the lead role. I will also say that if Sandler makes me like this movie as much as I like the original, I will never doubt his abilities again.
Also in the film:
James Cromwell (a great actor. I assume he will be the warden because he is perfect for the role)
William Fichtner
Terry Crews (former Redskin)
Snoop Dogg
Nelly
Michael Irvin
Bill Romanowski

hopefully it will be better than "Little Nicky"

...personally, i think sandler has lost it...IMO he's never been able to make any movie of late that even compares to "billy madison" and "happy gilmore". so if i had to guess how the remake will be i'd probably say that it's going to suck...

ss3, have you seen punch drunk love? sandler was quite good in a non-comedy role.

I have not seen Punch Drunk Love, but if you say he can act than that's good enough for me. If this is a "real" movie, then I'm sure it will be fine, but if this is a "Sandler" movie (Billy Madison, Happy Gilmore, The Waterboy), then it will be terrible. Those movies are fine in their own right, but this is a remake which could easily be butchered.
The problem I see is that this movie has so many people who have either played pro football (Irvin, Romanowski, Crews, Bosworth, Goldberg) or look like they have (Nash, Jones), but at the same time has people who are really going to look out of place (Sandler, Snoop Dogg). I really hope Sandler hits the weights and does a good job. I would gain a lot of respect for him if he makes his character believable.
For anyone who is worried about Michael Irvin's acting abilities, don't worry. He's playing a wide reciever on the team of convicts, so I'm sure his part will come naturally to him...

I think he and romo got the parts because they were already in the same prison they will be shooting from.

PDL was quite disturbing, but, yes, Sandler was able to carry himself in a non-goofy role. I was dissapointed watching PDL, becasue I thought it WOULD have his usual humor in it.
Sounds like this remake could be good.

The director is the same guy who did "Anger Managment" and "50 First Dates". I didn't see "50 First Dates" but thought "Anger Managment" was terrible, despite the fact I got to see Heather Graham wearing Red Sox underwear...

Thats the knock most comedians get when they try to branch out into non-comic roles. I thought he did a good job.
Wish Hollywood would come up with more original material instead of having to rely on "name" recognition, remaking older classics. May be good, but are we going to remake Gone With the Wind.

Ooops, they only did a sequal for that one.

I loved the original, it is a classic and one of my favorite sports movies....but I can't see a remake with Sandler and Snoop Dogg doing it justice. It wasn't a comedy to begin with.

I thought the original was a comedy. It's listed as a comedy/drama anyway.
I just read that Snoop Dogg will in fact not be in the movie, due to his tour. Just as well, he was going to be a misfit like Texas Hog said...

It may have had a couple of funny scenes, but it was much more a drama than a comedy. Nothing like Sandler's genre.

There were at least three sequels to Psycho, but that didn't stop anyone from doing a remake.

My point exactly - they all "were less than good". How many Survivor shows or Poker shows are on TV today. The fast buck says make something that has worked before rather than trying to come up with something new and innovative. I applaud the folks that do, and wish the others would just stop diluting the quality of cinema/TV with rehashed crud.

Because I know you all love getting updates about this...
It turns out that Bob "The Beast" Sapp, former NFL lineman turned K-1 (Japanese kickboxing circuit) superstar is also in the movie. He is 6'7" 375 pounds and is quite possibly the most impressive physical specimen I have ever seen:
