Not sure if this should be in Hog Wash or not....
Despite his religious convictions I'm bit surprised Darrell would touch this hot potato.
I guess they did not teach him about the 1st amendment at Texas A & I.
Santorum takes Senate lead in battle against gay marriage
By STEVE GOLDSTEIN
Philadelphia Inquirer
WASHINGTON - For better or worse, Sen. Rick Santorum has been the face and voice of the gay marriage amendment.
With its failure - the proposed constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage didn't muster enough votes to be considered Wednesday - did his prominent role in a losing cause politically help or hurt Pennsylvania's junior senator?
....{Former Washington Redskins star Darrell Green, actor Dean Jones ("The Love Bug") and singer Pat Boone appeared with Santorum at a press conference to urge support for the amendment.}

I'm sure that they did teach him about the first amendement. Thats why he feels that he is free to express his feelings on the topic. It takes guts to stand up for your religious convictions knowing that the public and the media will brand you as intolerant.

Excellent point Chad, and I don't disagree with his right to say whatever he wants to.
However, I wonder how "gutsy" people would think he was if he was advocating to repeal women's rights or, if he were white, saying that blacks should not be afforded the same rights as the rest of our society… hmmm….

Regardless if I or anyone else agrees with him or not, I feel that we can at least respect the fact the he was bold enough to speak on what he believes. A lot of people aren't that devout in their followings to stand up for what they believe.

Luv man... I respect his RIGHT to express himself AND his RIGHT to have an opinion on the subject.
That does not mean however that I have to respect HIM or his opinion just because he was willing to take a controversial stand.
Just because someone gets up and expresses an opinion does not entitle them to respect.
If he stood up in support of kiddie porn or animal cruelty would you respect him for his "bold" choice?
It also bothers me that he (like many others) can hide behind his religion on this issue.

As a Christian I am opposed to the idea of Gay Marriage. But I am also opposed to the idea of a National Gay Marriage ban, for political reasons.
What the Constitution actually says about the "Seperation" of Church and "State" has been grossly misconceived over the years. The Constituion simply states that the Federal Government shall make no laws regulating religion. It makes no claims about the states rights to do so. In the spirit of political fairness and rightness there should be no federal ban on Gay Marriages, but there also should be no federal prohibitions on a state whose voters decide to post the ten commandments wherever they choose, i.e. Alabama's Ten Commandments issue.
I am opposed to the act of Gay Marriage because the Bible clearly states that it is wrong. If someone else disagrees with me that is fine. I'm not here to impose my beliefs on you, but I am going to vote with my heart. And the Gay Marriage issue will be a part of that decision.
I have family and friends who are homosexual, and I love them and so does God. Homosexuality is against God's order but so is lying, and looking at women with lust in your heart, and pride. These are all sins that I personally struggle with. God still loves me as much as the Homosexual. Those who believe in Christ are washed clean of thier sins. No matter what those sins may be. If I deliberately choose to look at pornography every day God will not stop loving me. God does not stop loving the Homosexual, even the ones who practice homosexuality. But we as Chrisitans can not condone the act no more than I can condone my pride, or lust. If the spirit of God given through the sacrifice of Jesus is in me then I will have a repentant heart, and I do. And so will the homosexual, though he will not be perfect in his repentance because he is human. Just like me.
God does not hate anyone. He does not want anyone to be left out of his kingdom. The only choice one has to make is whether they believe in God's son Jesus, and whether they will proclaim His name as thier savior. But whether we make this decision is not up to God for he gave us a free will. If we reject Him during our life on earth then we will be without him in the hereafter. It is not about how righteous you are. Those who love Him WILL grow in his image. This is the fruit of the spirit that Jesus spoke of.
That way of the Lord is closed off to no one. Not even Hitler.
I BELIEVE this because of the wreck that God delivered me from. I was a nearly dead alcoholic, Drug addict, bisexual, sexually immoral, thief, liar, an abuser. Thats just scratching the surface. I know there is a God because when I had no one to turn to, when my pride and intelligence failed me, when my resentments nearly killed me. When I so despised my life that I sought out ruin....there was only one face that would look upon me and that was the face of Jesus. So I believe his word. Because his word is right, his word is perfect, and his word is love.
Yes, there are many gross misinterpretation of the bible, but if you study it with a sincere heart and an open mind you will find it to be without fault.
There is only one sin that is greater than the others and that is the sin of Blasphemy against the holy spirit....in other words...saying that God can't forgive certain people....for God's love is perfect....If God's forgiveness were limited then I would be in hell right now.

I'm locking this thread because it is ludicrous to have two Oprah threads... the other one has now been moved to the Smack forum.
