NFL NUGGETS : Gibbs, Redskins reclaim NFC East crown

Editor’s note: This is the second of four articles previewing the 2004 NFL division races. Next week, the AFC North and AFC South.
The real offensive
genius has returned
to Washington, D. C., and his arrival has the nation’s capital in an uproar. After 11 years of fiddling around with racecars, Joe Gibbs has reclaimed his rightful spot as Redskins ’ head man, which could result in some landslide victories.
But the biggest moves for the ’Skins came in free agency, with QB Mark Brunell, RB Clinton Portis, DT Cornelius Griffin and LB Marcus Washington all standing as upgrades over last year’s jobbers. And CB Shawn Springs is an adequate replacement for Champ Bailey, now with Denver. In fact, the Redskins look to me like the only NFC East team that has improved, personnel-wise.
I see Washington edging out Philly for the division title, possibly by tie-breaker.

In reading the rest of the story, it appears this columnist has it in for the Eagles, calling them the "Iggles" and subtlety implying that the Eagles blew it by taking on TO and Javon.
My this dude be profetic and have the Skins take the division... yeah!

There's nothing derogatory about Iggles. It's how most people in the area say it anyway. I think it's a byproduct of living in an area where things sound different from how they are spelled, like Bryn Mawr and Schuylkill.

Rumor has it that Jerry Jones tried to buy that newspaper along time ago and they would not sell it to him. Needless to say the heat in Arkansas must be affecting their brains.

I thought that was a fair assesment. On paper, which is all he has to look at right now, that is a great assesment.

I live in Arkansas... How about you explain that comment further? Just for me.

Yep, I think its fair too, but its paper. We WILL improve, the question is how much. I personally feel that we have a great shot at taking the division this year and then some. Thats my expactaions of the team this year, but in all reality no team is out to JUST win the divison....they want the rings and the trophy too. I say lets do one step at a time. Play every game like its the Super Bowl, learn from our mistakes, and help make the NFC East the feared division like it was in the in the late 80's to mid 90's. We have made great strides so far in bringing a better team and staff, with discipline, and restored love for the game.....the Skins will be a team that people will respect and play hard everytime.

I'm taking this all with a grain of salt because I find it hard to believe that a division whose different teams have added the likes of Portis, Springs, Owens, Kearse, Hand, MeShawn etc. only has one improved team.
Still, it's nice to read a good one from a diehard Redskins fan.
