Smoot

Fred Smoot - CB, Washington Redskins

If Smoot ever plays as well as he talks, he will be a perennial Pro Bowl player. Smoot, though, can back up most of what he says off the field with his performance on the field. Smoot never will be an overpowering tackler or a physical force at corner. However, he is a fine cover corner who uses his speed, balance, and instinct to their fullest advantage. He's capable of covering most of the top receivers in the league, has improved each year, keeps getting stronger and understands the little tricks of the trade that enable cornerbacks to enjoy long careers. Smoot is excellent at using his hands, not so much to jam receivers but to tap them on the hip and maintain contact with them as he and the receiver run down the field. It's not clear to anyone, with the possible exception of Smoot, that he can replace Champ Bailey as the team's primary shutdown cornerback. But Smoot has a chance to take on that role and underestimating him is a mistake. (Paul Woody for TSN)

See! If Springs goes down, we still have Smoot, Walt "Hapless" Harris, and Rashad "Where am I?" Bauman!

Springs won't get injured this year. He's going to return to his pro-bowl form, and Smoot is going to escalate to probowl form.

Everyone here knows what a supporter of ChAmp I am, but Smoot was already in probowl form last year. Champ got selected due to teh popularity aspect of the voting. I can admit that Smooty played better than ChAmp. GOOOO SMOOOOOOTY!!!

Walt Harris in years past was not a bad corner! as the 3rd corner If he can come back healthy will not be a bad option. In Greg Williams denfense will see quite a mix of all corners thet make the Team.

Smoot is a great player but he is not Elite and more than likely won't get to that statture, but he should get better. He should make the Pro Bowl and give several receivers fits. He does do alot of talking, but who doesn't? He should resign with us after next season if all goes well. And between now and then let's all show our support for ole' Smooty and hope he continues to excel his game.

If we combone all of our FA's DB's together we might get a healthy set of knees out of them. Instead we have four guys ALL coming off injuries and the "mouth of the south". This is put up or shut up time for Smoot.......I'd prefer he did both.

Just the facts, I dont think Brown and Harris are serviceable corners anymore WELL MAYBE Brown, but i see Harris being a liabiality.

They're very servicable to me as long as they're backups. But if an injury happens, it happens. I won't make myself worry about it.

Man I am sorry but I am so sick of hearing this. Smoot played his heart out last year. Every other player, or at least the big stars are given an out because of coaching. I think the same should be given to Smoot. There were several games where this young man was our only shining star, but you guys are forgeting that. The coaching sucked. I say he has the heart and dedication it takes to be a Redskins great. I give him this year to show that to everyone. Remember Lavar was a big talked last year too and he wasn't up to par.

Don't forget that Smoot played with a broken sternum too. Great player who shows alot of heart and is improving each year. He'll only get better...and think what would happen if we ever get pressure on the QB.

As for Brown and Harris...shaky knees or no they have to be a better option than Ade Jimoh.

You have a subscription to The Warpath? If that is not proof that you're a closet Redskin fan then I don't know what is.

Well spoken man. Here's my My 2 cents on what you are saying. Tell me one guy out there who doesn't run his mouth from time to time. Its all about gameface and confidence. Some people are very successful for getting into the heads of other players. One player who was notorious for it, just retired (John Randle). He once said in a Sportscenter Sunday conversation (right after his retirement) that "several guys he went up against he Knew they were younger, stronger, or more gifted. But if he could make them think he was smarter or in some cases crazy, or even just tried to annoy them....he would come out on top almost every play." What NikiH is saying is this....Bring your game, speak your game, and more importantly PLAY your game. Smoot does that. He has the heart, skills, and determination to play through injuires and setbacks. The guy deserved to be in the Probowl last year and this year he'll do whatever is nessicary for us to win and he'll also be marking his calender for Honalulu in February. He's just a little more vocal than other's and I happen to like that.

Once again NikiH, good post. It needed to be said.
