Gibbs...unsure?

"What we're going to do is treat [the Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio] as a scrimmage." --Joe Gibbs, Head Coach
He wants to treat this game as a "scrimmage." Is he hinting that the Redskins will not be ready to play the Broncos come HOF weekend? I think he is using this as a security blanket because if they do LOSE he can always say: it was treated as a "scrimmage," not a game.
ARE GIBBS AND THE REDSKINS REALLY READY FOR THE NFL??? I don't think we'll see any improvement in the team as compared to last year until 3 to 4 weeks into the season. This is going to happen NOT because of poor coaching but because of their ability to transition from a horrible past season to a "playoff year."
What do you guys think??

Gibbs has always talked that way. Even during the glory years he would talk like we would be lucky to get even a field goal. I am not concerned in the least.

You are thinking too much. Are you high right now? Gibbs said what it is and thats it...a scrimmage. Is the preseason not a scrimmage? The only person that did not treat the preseason as a scrimmage was Spurrier...he went balls out in the preseason and the entire league laughed at him.
Gibbs is a hall of famer...he is deffinately going to SAY THE RIGHT THINGS...and as far as Do the right things...well, just have faith..sit back...and watch..

It's PRE season. The games don't count! Its a chance to see your rookies, your undrafted guys, etc. Its important for guys who are on the cusp of making the team. Its important to me because I at least get to watch football even if the games dont' count. But I don't really care aobut whether we win or lose. I just hope our starters don't get injured.

Are you a closet Broncos fan????!!!!

Gibbs looks at preseason games as a chance to get a look at the younger guys anyway...he's famous for not caring about the score in those meaningless games. No worries. I hope the Skins lose all their preseason just so Gibbs and his Skins can unload on unsuspecting teams in real games.

I think it was the 1991-2 SuperBowl year when we went 17-2. We went 0-4 in the preseason. Look at the young guys. Work out the kinks. Don't show 'em anything.

Wow guys, The guys brand new and you call him "high" and a closet broncos fan.... way to welcome him

Feel free to jump off your high horses anytime....
Can't the guy be a skeptic, I mean, we've had 10+ bad seasons, with one good one thrown in..... I actually like the non-hyped skeptic type... lord knows we need it after the past couple of over hyped seasons....
This is going to happen NOT because of poor coaching but because of their ability to transition from a horrible past season to a "playoff year."
Just remember it can be done.... just look at Carolina
and Welcome to the board!

gibbs is going to treat it as a scrimage. the starters will probably get no more than five snaps, before they sit. which is good. save the injury risk till the regular season.

I died laughing when I saw that Spurrier pic. He looks so excited, he knew he was Super Bowl bound! LMAO.
I also worried about Joe Gibbs mind state when I saw one of his initial interviews. He was saying how he was scared of the cowgirls and what not. But my father told me to calm the F down because thats normal for Gibbs.

Joe Ggibbs is the best sandbagger I know, on Dec 26 when we have a 4 game lead over Dallas is the divsion getting ready to play them..all Joe will talk about is how they own us and have won the last 11 out 13 or something to that effect...I love it!!

In a way, it's nice to see a post like this. It's nice to see that Joe Gibbs has still got it! Someone once said about one of Gibbs' greatest teams, that they went 14-2, but every week he had the whole city and team believing that they were the underdogs.
This man is a genius. Joe Gibbs is on the Mt. Rushmore of NFL football coaches.

During Gibbs' previous tenure, the Redskins generally had poor pre-seasons. Personally I too would be quite happy for an 0-5 pre-season because then we'd be certain of a good season!

No need to worry
As a long time skins fan I can distinctly remember going 0-4 or 1-3 nearly every preseason while Joe was coach
Then coming out and making the playoffs

Gibbs is shifting the focus on preseason from an opportunity to show the league your entire playbook(Turner, Spurrier) to tryouts for players under game conditions (every other winning NFL coach in history).
What could possibly be wrong with that ?

TCwest is right, Joe won't show anything in preseason. The offense will be boring and base and we will be lucky to win a game, but come regular season it will be a completly different story.

(Glad to be back after a long work-required absence)
To reinforce what others have said a dozen times on this thread: Joe Gibbs will never, even during the regular season, admit publicly that the Redskins should be favored to win a game. We shouldn't be on the same field as team x...
For this HOF game, I am sure that whoever the Denver QB is, he will remind Joe of Elway...maybe even a little better...immense potential..."he scares me", etc.
That is the Gibbs way. The rule: never, ever, give the opposing team an extra reason to get up for a game.
In the pre-season, Gibbs always plays the games as an extension of training. He evaluates, he experiements, and he never wants to risk injuring a player. Scrimmage is probably right.
If you want to see Hasselback and that other kid, these will be the games (after 1st quarter, which he uses to work out the regulars).

Actually, with Spurrier's "Three and Done" offense, we didn't see too much of that to begin with, did we?
I agree with DEHog, Gibbs absolutely knows the mental part of coaching. He was, is and will always be low key. Never mistake one of his comments as a lack of confidence in the team. The moment you do will be the moment you are dead wrong.
