I was reading through Athlon Sports 2004 Preview, and I ran across an interesting thing in the draft review section:
"...Chris

ey is an H-back, A-back, fullback, tight end and a long snapper."
I have never heard of the "A-back" position, and frankly, I am more inclined to think this writer (Dan Shonka) made it up completley than there is a position out there I haven't heard of. It's like trying to think of a new color or something.
Has anyone EVER heard of an "A-back"?

That's new to me also. I've heard of most names but not that one.

An A-back is ALSO a hybrid TE/RB. I found a couple of references, though not many... these articles will help a little though...

That is interesting but it seems to be a college football term, like "Monster", in the pros it seems that a player who lines up all over is now called "Slash" thanks to Kordell Stewert. Not that there is that many players who can do this.

You're right. From what I gather it's a college position in a college offense. I should have figured as much. In college, there are so many unique offenses that there are probably dozens of position terms I have never heard of...

Do you think we may see him

ey line up in the backfield as a RB?

From what I remember about the H-back there are times when he would line up in the backfield but most of the time he was the motion man.

ey might be in the fullback spot, but he'll never be the tailback. If he gets more than five carries I'll be shocked...

If he gets more than 5 carries, that means we are very thin at RB and have MAJOR problems.
