Trouble in Dallas

Associated Press
IRVING, Texas -- Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Antonio Bryant reportedly had an altercation with coach Bill Parcells during practice Tuesday and was ejected by club security.

Witnesses who spoke on condition of anonymity told the The Dallas Morning News and Fort Worth Star-Telegram for Wednesday's editions that the confrontation began when Bryant complained about his role as the team's third receiver and the number of repetitions he was getting during a drill.

Bryant got into separate arguments with receivers coach Todd Haley and Keyshawn Johnson. When Parcells told Bryant to stop, the third-year player took off his pads and jersey, slammed them to the ground and began to leave the practice field.

Sources told the Star-Telegram that Parcells picked up the jersey and threw it back at Bryant, who then threw it in the face of the approaching coach.

Bryant was then escorted out of practice by security personnel

Bryant's agent, Lamont Smith, said he was aware of the incident and "it's being worked out internally with the team."

But the confrontation has clouded the player's future with the team, one day after the conclusion of the team's three-day minicamp and was part of a series of on-field activities Parcells is conducting until the end of the week.

The Cowboys were scheduled to report to training camp July 30 in Oxnard, Calif.

Although Bryant has often complained about his role in Dallas and had other practice-field and sideline blowups, he was expected to be a key member of the Cowboys' receiving corps.

Taken in the second round of the 2002 draft, Bryant earned all-rookie honors in 2002 after catching 44 passes for 733 yards and six touchdowns. Bryant caught 39 passes for 550 yards and two touchdowns last year as the third receiver behind Joey Galloway and Terry Glenn.

This year, Bryant was set to be the third receiver behind Glenn and Johnson, who was acquired from Tampa Bay in a trade for Galloway.

Sounds like a trade is about to happen to me. If this happens Dallas is stupid. Even though he does have an attitude problem whether you like him or not The kid is talented.

He would give us more problems than Meyshwan would any day.

I wonder if Bill Parcells called him an "oriental" or a "jap" and that's why he was so upset.

Parcells

Tuna probably called it a sneaky "Jap" move, throwing the jersey at him like that!

Isn't it nice to see the meltdown in Dallas, but everything is quiet in Washington? We had the Parcells "Jap" comment, the Antonio Bryant thing, and the Cowboys have withdrawn their request for the new stadium in Dallas' Fair Park. That means they will likely build it in one of the surrounding cities which will piss a lot of people off. I can't wait to see what happens next!!

I love this kid though. He's only 23 and he has put up extremely good numbers for being a 3rd reciever. The report by ESPN says that his time with Dallas may be over. I wouldn't mind him on the Redskins. Yeah, I know we are stacked at reciever, but Gibbs has stated that they still have plans in place to sign another reciever if they see something that they like. However, behavior issues are something that's not high on Coach Gibbs' list.

"I wouldn't mind him on the Redskins"

Nooooooooooooo! Not more wide receivers! How many receivers can you have on one team?

"Yeah, I know we are stacked at reciever,"

Stacked at receiver? Coles is a good one, but I really think that's where it ends. 50/50 Rod has been a bust. Jacobs is unproven, and soft I think. Hardly stacked.

"stacked" might not be the right term but the English language isn't helping us out any. There needs to be an English word for "overloaded roster with 3 bazillion wide receivers of average ability".

..."stacked" might not be the right term"

Here's one vote for "constipated" at wide receiver....better?

i wouldnt say we are stacked at all at wr...i stopped using that term after all the shopping sprees. I remember last year i felt wr should be upgraded..and it didnt. If coles foot doesnt hold up who would u trust...not gardner. I know we got alot of youngins...but unknowns also. I would trade anyone but coles for bryant. I hate dallas, but that kid can play.

Gibbs won't touch him. He won't acquire another attitude. He likes "character" players - ie. of good character.

Im not defending the player but there has to be more to the story than we know. The rest of the story may confirm that the player is a butt-munch, or had a decent reason for frustration. Regardless I think he could have handled the situation better by waiting till the end of practice. I think he wanted some attention by acting like that during practice and bit off more then he could chew.
