It seems to me if the redskins create some team chemistry in training camp what would stop the redskins this yr or next. As of right now it seems like the redskins could have one of the top offenses in the NFL. The depth at WR is probably one of the deepest in the NFL with Coles, 50/50 , McCants, Thrash, and hopefully the emergence of Jacobs. We have a top 5 RB in the back field with Portis. At QB Ramsey and Brunell have a lot of potential to have success with this team if the protection is what it should be and the O line is only getting better with Bugel as the coach. On defense they might only be one piece missing, that is another DE. For coaching, there is no one i would rather see in the burgandy and gold! What do you all think?

They need a hard charging Dt also. But your right about o. I just hope we don't loose Fred Smoot after this year. I think they will resign him though.

It will all depend on Smoots performance this year, you will be able to tell at around the half way point. If he is having a good year it would behoove Synder to start contract talks around week 10.

...this has got to be Gardner's year. Irrespective of what Coles does this year, Gardner needs to make himself a viable #2, or else... SEE YA!

I did NOT forget about Gardner aka 50/50 at teh stadium....and you call yourself a skins fan just playing with ya...

I'm not so sure. I think that, other than to implement William's defensive scheme, we brought in several CBs in case Smoot becomes too expensive to keep.

I guarantee Smoot will have a monster year, since, in essence, he is either playing for a pay raise from the Skins or auditioning for another team (can you say Chargers & Marty - the guy who drafted him?); that's the MO of most of today's players in pro sports.

I'm not hatin'. I look forward to seeing Smoot blow up, but if his contract doesn't allow him to be a "core Skin", I am eager to see who Joe's coaches can develop as a replacement.

Its good for business if every team has a few players that that are loyal to the team and can be a contant figure in the organization.

True, but, it would be wise to mimic New England's approach of signing players to extensions long before they've blown up or their contracts are almost up. Smoot is DEFINITELY gonna have an awesome year. He has matured physically and emoptionally, and he has become more than just a vocal leader on this team.

However, the amount of money Smoot may command plus the added pressure of not wanting to pull another "Champ Bailey negotiation" may be too much for this organization to handle. In recent years, we made it a habit of marketing the team as "player x's" team, whereas, with Joe's comeback, it now becomes "His Team". I think gone are the days when Danny would naively throw money at a corner (see: Sanders, Deion) for marketing purposes. We're building a contender and cannot afford to put all our apples in one bushel, namely SMoot.

Don't get me wrong, if we can afford him (and build a lasting contender with the remaining money), we should keep Smootie.

I don't think we'll have to worry about Smoot leaving next year.... I believe he will have a big year... and should get a good contract.... but one gets the feeling that he loves being here... he loves the fans.... and he's built a good foundation here... and I don't think he's one to just run off after he's worked so hard to build himself up... and start all over again....

I think when it comes to his contract next year.... he'll demand alot.... but he'll also try to stay here in the same.... I could be wrong.... but I'm a pretty good reader of people.... and that's just a gut feeling I have about him.... he's impressed me alot these past couple years through his mental and physical growth.... I believe he'll be a redskin for along time to come.

Gambit has a good point here - I do think the skins will have to seriously consider keeping Smoot. We really were not able to do anything to get Champ to stay and I do not think they will let another good CB go.

True. True. For the first few years, it was obvious that if a team wanted to advance the ball, they could throw it at Smoot's side for guaranteed yardage, but that has changed a lot; Smoot's really matured and become a good cornerback. This is one guy who definitely leaves his heart on the field and is genuinely interested in the fans. I hope his contract doesallow us to keep him.

On a side note, it may be early in the AM, but did I read this right?
