The Washington Redskins announced yesterday the signing of tight end FredBaxter, who is expected to provide depth at tight end.

The 12-year veteran played the past two seasons with the New England Patriots after stints with the New York Jets (1993-'99) and the Chicago Bears (2001-'02).

Baxter signed a one-year contract worth $760,000, the NFL minimum for a player with his years of service. Walter Rasby is Washington's projected starter at tight end; third-year veteran Robert Royal likely will be a reserve.

The addition of the 6-foot-3, 268-pound Baxter gives the Redskins seven tight ends, an unusually high number because the position is critical to Coach Joe Gibbs's offense. ChrisCooley, Brian Kozlowski, Mike Sellers and Kevin Ware are competing to be the starting H-back, a tight end who normally lines up off the line of scrimmage or in the backfield and is used more as a wide receiver. The other tight end in Gibbs's offense will line up on the line of scrimmage and primarily serve as a blocker.

The Redskins plan to activate four tight ends on game days, while most teams carry only two or three on the active roster. Washington appears likely to release one or two tight ends before the regular season.

I don't get how this roster will work.

4 TEs
3 QBs
5 RBs (Portis, Betts, Cartwright, Morton and Sellars)
5 WRs (Coles, Thrash, Gardner, Taylor J, McCants
10 OL
9 DL (Wynn, Griffin, Upshaw, Daniels, Salavea'a, Noble, Boschetti or Heuer, + Street Free agent)
6 LBs (Washington, Mitchell, Pierce, Barrow, Arrington and Marshall for Special Teams)
1 LS
5 CBs
4 S
1 P
1 K

That's 54. ONE OVER the max. And that's without further additions, which I think we need.

We can't go light in DLine because of Wynn, Upshaw, Noble's age. Joe G won't go light in the OLine...

Anyone?

Interesting. I'd put Jermaine Haley on the defensive line instead of Boschetti/Hauer/free agent. I don't know how they will work this. The places with the most room for cutting wieght appear to be tight end and running back, although I couldn't tell you who is going to be the guy to go. If I had to bet right now, I'd put my money on Mike Sellars. Right now he looks to be the third string H-back behind Cooley and Koz...

Someone will go from either the D-Line or O-line.

Do we really have 10 guys on the O-line? I don't think we do. We don't have a back up for every single position. Especially with the cutting of Fiore the depth on our line is somewhat suspect.

Samuels
Winey
Fiore
Raymer
Friedman
Thomas
Jansen
Molinaro
Wilson

Who am I forgetting?
