Former NFL defensive lineman Dunstan Anderson, a member of the Florida Firebirds of the af2 league, was killed in a automobile accident near Fort Myers on Monday afternoon, a spokesperson for the Florida Highway Patrol confirmed.

Anderson, 33, played briefly with the Atlanta Falcons in 1994 and the Miami Dolphins in 1997. A speed-rushing defensive end from Tulsa who entered the league as an undrafted free agent in 1994, Anderson also had two stints in the NFL Europe League. In all, he participated in four different NFL training camps.

He was a passenger in an SUV that apparently went out of control and crashed. Police said that Anderson was not wearing a seat belt. Kathie Weakley, driver of the vehicle, survived the accident and is hospitalized in critical condition.

"They ran off the roadway and into the median," Sgt. Owen Keen of the Florida Highway Patrol said. "When they tried to get back on the road, it overturned several times. The force pushed (Anderson) out one of the windows."

Keen told local media that alcohol was involved in the accident. An investigation into the crash and its possible causes continues.

Anderson played this weekend in an af2 game, lining up at defensive end and tight end. The af2 is the minor league for the Arena Football League.
