Sources close to the Redskins say CB Fred Smoot has shown tremendous dedication to the finer details of the game, such as film study, this offseason — something that rubbed off from former teammate Champ Bailey, a notoriously disciplined player.

Rumors persist that the Seahawks could go after a veteran middle linebacker (Jeremiah Trotter?) before the summer runs its course, but we hear head coach Mike Holmgren seemed dead-set against going in that direction at presstime.

Redskins WR Taylor Jacobs, battling for the team’s No. 3 spot, has added nearly 10 pounds of muscle this offseason, mostly in his upper body. Jacobs apparently hasn’t lost any of his speed, and the added weight should help him get off the line better, something that hurt him as a rookie.

I would love to see Jacobs come back and make a difference in the offense this year.

Everytime I read something about Smooty it is always positive and makes me like him more and more! That is also great news about Jacobs! Maybe he can be a major impact WR this receiver! I still cant see him beating out DMAC! Maybe we should consider trading Gardner?

I never thought that we would have this awesome of a scenario at WR. Every time I read an article about one of the receivers working hard for that number 2 or 3 spot, I like them more and more. I really feel like we're going to get some top quality guys at all of our WR spots, which will be great in a offense that doesn't even necessarily need that.

Nice to have that weapon there to keep defenses honest--just keep pounding Clinton 25-30 times a game, and every once in a while throw that long ball.

Question for those that (fortunately) got to witness Joe Gibbs first stint in detail: I know that he ran a very run-heavy offense, but did he tend to do the Shotty type thing and run a lot in conjunction with the long ball? Or did he tend to throw over the middle (#81) more often.

Is there any coaching style on offense that one could compare Gibbs' first run to? I'm just trying to imagine what it was like to watch it.

I really thought jacobs was going to be good last year, but with that serious injury in the preseason it really held him back. Hopefully he will have a breakout year this year, and the news about smoot is great. Remember smoot was a guy coming out of college that no one wanted becuase of a suppossed problem with weed and an attitude problem. HOw far from the truth is that. Well at least marty did something positive when he was here, take smoot.

Honestly his offense varied with the personnel he had. He's a master at using people to their abilities and mixing things up so it works. Sometimes it's more run run run, long ball. Other times it's run, trickery type play, etc. Sometimes it's over the middle, run. You get drift. Not only that but the man is the ultimate master of half time adjustments. I believe it was the super bowl against miami where the first half was a lot of trick plays and tons of motion and the second half he just started pounding the ball which changed the game. Anyways, that's how I remember it... you can't really place a label or certain style on Gibbs' offense. He makes it work with who he has and what the other team throws at 'em.

Hearing good stuff about our potential 2-5 receivers is always reassuring...
I also have the utmost confidence in Smoot, he WILL be a SHUTDOWN this year!!!
The big WR question as i see it, is,
HOW the Hell are Coles' toes and feet?? He never had surgery and it was supposedly bothering him in mini-camp...if we don't have a #1 receiver what does the 2-5 matter??

Thanks for the info, Skins74. I don't think a single game went by 2 years ago (when I was able to watch all the games at home) without my dad telling me about how awesome Gibbs was at the half-time adjustment.

Was there ever a period in time (aside from his 0-5 start in the league) when Gibbs ran a primarily pass-oriented offense i.e. west coast, fun & gun, etc.

I know we'd all miss Coles if his toe holds him back at all this season. But you have to like our depth at WR. I think Coach Gibbs could go out with some combo of Gardner, Thrash, McCants and Jacobs and still be successful.

Thats something that my father always used to tell me about and now I get to see it also. We've been missing that in the past few years, especially last year.

Nothing new on Royal. I think he's just keeping the low road to a successful recovery. Either that or no one in the media cares how well he's doing.
