portis is going to blow up this year... once we start getting a lot of hype and publicity on all of the pregame shows... everyone will forget about that 2nd round pick we gave to denver...

there is a real simple theory being advanced as to why the second rounder was being offered - not mine, but it sounded feasible...
If we got Portis, we knew he wasn't going to run on his current contract. We knew we were going to have to offer him more money. So in fact, they didn't balk at giving up the 2nd rounder choice in part because they allocated that money to financing the new contract for Portis. And being a high second rounder, the money could have been decent.
I think if you look at it - the Skins may not have felt they could afford to keep the pick and rework Portis' contract
And before anyone declares it silly - think on this - how much money do we have left? A little over 3 mil - how much is our rook pool? A little over 3 mil

Good point Rich in Roanoke, I never thought of it that way. I didnt like the trade at the time it happened but Ive come around to the idear of have Portis run through huge holes created by the Hogs.(I Hope!!)

Also, Michael Wilbon pointed out right after the trade that for the next five years or so Springs and Portis are going to cost us the same as Bailey is going to cost Denver! I was looking for the exact quote but they don't seem to have the article archived on washingtonpost.com anymore.

that's ok - seems to be close enough... they might cost us a bit more over time, but two class players and possible all pros versus one.
That is a winner in my book any day. No - Springs isn't the best. Neither, in my opinion is Champ. He was better than Shaun, but not by the large margin that you would have to have to justify the amount between Springs and Champ.
Sorry Champ fans - once again - my opinion.
