Did I sleep through some kind of jersey retirement ceremony? What is this about Joe Theismann "letting Haskins wear Number 7?"

I mean Joe went to a couple of Super Bowls but he's the Redskins equivalent of Eli Manning. The team got there in spite of Joe, not because of Joe. Now he thinks his former number is retired unless he says otherwise? [-(

I really hate the whole retire the number thing. Love Theisman, but what percentage of the fanbase was even alive to have seen Joe play?

Let the rookies ask permission from these ring of honor guys. Pay some respect and tribute to Theisman. Pass the torch graciously.

Correct me if I'm wrong but only one Redskins number is retired, 33. They "protect" other numbers. While I understand 44, 28 , 81, 9 I never understood why 7 was and 11 and 17 weren't? If you're not going to protect 11 and 17 don't do it for 7!

44 is the only Redskins number to protect. If you want to wear that number you better be 6'2" 230 with a huge afro and a complete disregard for authority. And you have to wrassle Riggo for the right to wear it.

I liked the fact that Haskins said, when asked, he'd talk to Mr Thiesmann about number 7.

Joe should just welcome that and be happy though

True. Those were impressive teams. Watched some games on YT the other day
and Joe T was the "least good" player. That '83 offense was a yard-devouring machine.

Let's hope we can achieve at least 10% of that efficiency with the new #7.

How about no. If you can't give Collins 21 then the same all around. Number 8 would look good. Nice of him to be respectful about it though. Plus 1 to win me over.

I think they should let him have it. He deserves it. Go Collins

Off course it is. Joe isn't going to say no after bringing that attention to it. It's a done deal from him saying that he wants to talk tp him. Joe wants to appear gracious in public.

There is no scenario where Joe says i talked to him and i think i don't want him to wear it. Please

I don't mind it at all. Very few numbers should be retired. Very few.

I can respect the "protected" practice, but if a number is protected for 2-3 decades and you don't decide it's worth retiring, then put it back in circulation. We've already seen that the size of the set of Redskins' protected numbers can make it tough for the team to fill out a roster.

Along those lines, I would say retire #28, officially. That's the only one I'm certain of. I wouldn't oppose #9 being retired. After that, though, I think you just gotta let players keep playing. Put 44, 81, 21, etc., back in eventually.

No problem at all... the kid called Theisman and made the request as an indication of respect. I think that was a class move, and hope that Haskins will do nothing but create a legitimate legacy for the number.
