I'll be honest its hard for me to imagine how we afford any top tier FAs this offseason. But its looking like Giants won't tag Collins this offseason and (weirdly) some are reporting that he WANTS to be here:

Landon Collins says the dream is to be a Washington Redskin. His #1 choice
What's your take? Another Alabama defender at a serious position of need?

I recall reading that Sean Taylor was an idol for Collins. And maybe the Skins were his favorite team growing up.

Or maybe he wants to get paid and knows Washington will do it.

Whatever the reason . . . he's a great player, and we do need a safety. Having seen the Skins get burned by about 90% of our big-name free agent signings, however, I can't exactly say I'm excited by the idea of us acquiring him. Still, he's a great player, and we do need a safety.

Collins would have to take some kind of back-loaded deal to make it fit. The Skins have a bunch of positions to fill and virtually no cap space.

Yeah I totally don't get how they make it work financially. But a 26 year old guy who fills a desperately needed position and is a proven baller? AND he WANTS to be here in Washington? Yeah, figure out how to make it happen.

I think he was saying that at the time because he wanted to get drafted pretty high and like others said because of the Sean Taylor love. At this point he probably would want to go where he can get paid!!

Always wished we had drafted him... Stud- worth the paper... Please do

Dont see how our cap is so screwed- AS cant play, should be a clause to get some cap back. Sob

I think they can make a deal for Collins if they want to make it happen. 26 year old safety would be worth it.

One good thing this year is that like four or five good safeties are on the FA market.

WOW! Just saw this news!!!

Sources: Former #Giants star S Landon Collins is signing a 6-year deal for a whopping $84M with the rival #Redskins. Hard to imagine a box safety with this kind of deal after last year’s slow safety market. This moves the market dramatically.

This move is huge....if he pans out.
More or less the same was made about Norman. He's been irregular, to say the least.

Let's see how he gels with our system. Superb talent in every measurable way.

Yeah but you can say that about every free agent that you pay big money. If a guy comes in here and doesn't deliver, its a lot of wasted $$.

I like that he's only 25 years old. I like that he looks like an actual playmaker on defense. I like that he was NFC Defensive Player of the Year in 2016. And I like that he did that on an otherwise mediocre NYG defense.

He may not pan out, but he's a solid bet.

1st impression:

Too much money for a strong safety.

He plays both but he definitely played better in the box for the Giants. Then again their defense is terrible and he was a Pro Bowler on it, so we'll see what happens.

When he plays FS he's out of position.

A few contract details, etc.
ASHBURN, Va. (AP) -- Landon Collins wore No. 21 in honor of Sean Taylor. Now he'll don the same burgundy and gold as his idol.

Collins on Monday agreed to sign a six-year, $84 million deal with the Washington Redskins that includes $45 million guaranteed. After the New York Giants let Collins walk rather than pay him $11.2 million with the franchise tag, he'll make an average of $14 million per season as one of the highest-paid safeties in football.

A person with knowledge of the agreement confirmed the deal to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Monday because it can't become official until free agency opens Wednesday. It's the latest big move by the Redskins after they agreed last week to acquire quarterback Case Keenum from the Denver Broncos.

Swapping 2020 sixth- and seventh-round picks with Denver to get Keenum is a low-risk trade to fill the void left by Alex Smith's career-threatening injury. Signing Collins is another expensive splash for an organization that has a reputation for spending big in free agency .

Before New York selected him 33rd overall in the 2015 draft, Collins said he always wanted to play for the Redskins because of Taylor, the hard-hitting safety who died after being shot at his home in Florida in 2007.

The 25-year-old Collins led the Giants with 96 tackles last season, and his 437 since entering the NFL in 2015 are the most among safeties in that time. In 59 career games, Collins had eight interceptions but none last season.

''He is a complete safety,'' retired safety Will Blackmon said on Twitter. ''He is a leader, he's smart, he can cover man or zone, he has great ball skills, he has really good instincts and most importantly he can tackle extremely well.''

Getting Collins fills one of Washington's biggest needs on a defense that ranked 17th in the league last season. The team acquired safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix from Green Bay at the 2018 trade deadline, but he is set to be a free agent. D.J. Swearinger was released late in the season after repeatedly questioning the coaching staff and was claimed off waivers by Arizona.

There's also uncertainty about safety Montae Nicholson, who was arrested in December for assault and battery and missed the final two games of last season.

Collins' situation is reminiscent of when the Carolina Panthers let cornerback Josh Norman go by rescinding the franchise tag after his All-Pro season in 2015. The Redskins then signed him to a $75 million, five-year contract.

Giants general manager Dave Gettleman was then GM of the Panthers, which led Norman on Monday to tweet , ''In 'Gettleman' WE Trust (All-DBs) securing the'' money.

The irony is that Norman is among the players who could be released to save salary-cap space. Releasing Norman would save the Redskins $8.5 million after three seasons with the team.

Is it wrong to not get excited anymore with these signings...I've just seen to many come here and not perform....damn you Redskins!!

I agree. It's not like every free agent signing the Skins have made has been bad. The signing of AP was the best thing they did last year.

Well add to that the Skins could have had Derwin James! Couldn't believe he was still on the board when the Skins picked....but he wasn't from Bama'

I don't think its wrong. People all over the league get stoked about a FA signing, but its still just one guy. He's not going to change the team overnight.

My personal interest is just in seeing what new faces will be on the team this year. I'm also interested in whether or not it looks like the front office is making a good move or not.

My take on this right now is that they got a quality young player. I don't expect him to be ST but he does look like a playmaker. They were aggressive in getting the guy that they wanted. The contract looks in line with what top safeties are getting this year. And his new teammates seem psyched about it judging by Twitter.

Can't judge FAs for a while, but I'll give the team credit for this one.

Collins is a sure tackler. They can certainly use more of those.

A good signing, and so was Keenum.

Now draft a WR plus some OL.

Kind of have to, don't they? I don't see much help at WR in free agency this year at all.

Yea, Antonio Brown was way overpriced for a 31 year old WR on the decline and he was cheap compared with what the Browns just gave up for Odell Beckham, a player the Giants wouldn't have traded within the division regardless.

The Skins are going to have to learn how to draft wide receivers which may mean they have to look at schools other than Alabama.
