Adrian Peterson Rumors: Redskins Hosting Ex-Vikings, Cardinals RB
Multiple injuries at running back forced the Washington Redskins to look at signing veteran Adrian Peterson.
According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Washington is hosting Peterson for a team visit.
Josina Anderson of ESPN also noted the player's interest in joining the Redskins.
"I'm down for working out or whatever I have to do to make the team," he said Sunday.
Peterson appeared in 10 games last season while splitting time with the New Orleans Saints and Arizona Cardinals, finishing with 529 rushing yards and two touchdowns.
The 33-year-old averaged just 3.4 yards per carry after producing only 1.9 yards per carry in his three games played in 2016.
Still, Peterson is only a few years removed from leading the NFL with 1,485 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns in 2015 with the Minnesota Vikings. It was his fourth time being named first-team All-Pro and seventh selection to the Pro Bowl as part of his likely Hall of Fame career.
Unfortunately, he has struggled to find a new landing spot leading into the 2018 season.
Washington is in need of backfield help, though, after rookie second-round pick DerriusGuice went down with a torn ACL in the first preseason game.
Samaje Perine also suffered a sprained ankle and will likely miss at least a week, per Mike Garafolo of NFL Network. Byron Marshall will also likely miss two to four weeks with his ankle injury, per Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.
With Chris Thompson also still recovering from his broken fibula, Rob Kelley is the only healthy and established player on the roster.

Been following the conversation on local radio this AM. Doesn't seem like most of the radio guys are down with AP mainly because of his stats from last year.

I don't have a strong opinion either way. But I'm pretty sure Gruden and Allen both need a winning season, so if AP is a guy they think can help for a year, I wouldn't be mad to see him signed on a 1 year deal.

Does anybody else think Perine is being dismissed a little early? He was a rookie last year and to be fair no RB has had a lot of success running in Gruden's system or behind this line, whatever the issue is.

#Redskins are signing RB Adrian Peterson, sources tell me and @RapSheet. Peterson embarks on his 12th NFL season with his fourth team. Needs 37 rushing yards to pass Jim Brown and crack the top 10 all time. Can do it quickly in Washington.

Adrian Peterson - RB - Redskins
Redskins signed RB Adrian Peterson, formerly of the Cardinals, to a one-year contract.
The Skins also worked out Jamaal Charles and Orleans Darkwa but Peterson impressed them the most. The 33-year-old is a shell of the player who once rushed for over 2,000 yards in a season, but obviously the Redskins feel he still has something left. Not that they had much of a choice—Washington's backfield is a mess right now with Derrius Guice (ACL), Samaje Perine (ankle) and Byron Marshall (ankle) all injured. Look for AD to mix in with Rob Kelley on early downs with Chris Thompson playing his usual role on passing downs.

Well, we needed someone else. AP is someone, so he'll do I guess.

Forgive me if I withhold enthusiasm until he actually does something, though. Preseason hype by his teammates will mean nothing to me — just look at what the Saints said about him last year before he flopped and was traded. You'd have thought he was going to be a god running around the field. I'm prepared for it.

Totally agree. Should be ZERO expectations for AP. Maybe we'll all be pleasantly surprised. Or maybe he won't even make the 53?

Heard Trent Williams was pretty excited about this signing though. Former OU teammates who work out together in the offseason.

We were in the same place this time last year and management decided that with Cousins they didn't need AP, so here we are now without Cousins and now we need AP? Doesn't say much for their expectation for Smith, does it.

I don't really see what bearing it has on Smith. They brought in AP because a bunch of our RBs got hurt in the preseason.

I'd also add that AP got a 2 year/$7m contract from the Saints this time last year. The Skins got him for $1m/1 year.

No need to overthink it.
