Cousins answer questions from fans

Highlights begin:
Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins is at Jammin Java in Vienna on Friday for a two-hour, question-and-answer session with fans hosted by 106.7 The Fan’s Grant Paulsen and Danny Rouhier. During the sold-out event, which will benefit the D.C. Dream Center, Cousins is expected to answer questions about his six years in Washington and his uncertain future. This post will be updated with Cousins’s comments throughout the afternoon. You can listen to Cousins’s Q&A here.

Shortly after Cousins was introduced to applause, Paulsen wasted no time asking one of the key questions that will factor into whether Cousins is in D.C. next season: Do you want to be a Washington Redskin?

“That has been the question, right?” Cousins said with a laugh. “That’s what we talked about last summer in July. The short answer is yes. I just feel that it’s been a very positive six years. Obviously, we don’t have Super Bowl rings to show for it, we don’t have playoff wins, but it’s a privilege to play here. I’ve felt that for all six seasons. I’d be foolish to say I don’t want to be here. It is truly a dream come true and a privilege to be here. Now obviously, it’s not that simple or that easy, and we have time to figure all that out, and work through all the circumstances that have to take place to feel really good about that, but I do feel the short answer is yes and let’s work through it.”

Redskins all-in to find a way to re-sign Cousins

Tis the fun part of the year for Redskins fans - the first reports after the season ended were that Cousins was not interested in playing here and that he wanted to go somewhere that 1) would offer a better chance at making the playoffs AND 2) somewhere that he was appreciated more ...

now this from CBS Sports ... https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/kirk ... gning-him/

on one hand I'd like this to be settled quickly, but ... it is kind of interesting to watch these idiots in our FO screw things up so badly again

stay tuned ...

- During today's Q&A, Cousins says that the Redskins were "all in" last off-season. I read the details of Cousins' answers in the Post. The CBS reporter misunderstood what Cousins said.

- He said polite things about the team, Bruce Allen, and Daniel Snyder. (Probably nothing good would come by attacking ownership and management of any NFL team)

- Key thing he wants in a contract, in addition to going to a place that wants him: guaranteed money. Compare MLB contracts with NFL contracts. All $ in MLB are guaranteed. NFL contracts protect the team but not the player. Not much guaranteed. NFL is a "year-to-year" league, as Cousins has put it. Look at Allen's claim, last summer, that the Redskins offered $120 million. When the Post analyzed Allen's contract, it found that the Redskins offered a year that Cousins was to receive anyway by the tag, plus one extra year of guaranteed $. Everything else was Allen (and Snyder?) puffery.

So basically, we're still at an impasse. He says he wants to be here but that there are lots of things to iron out if all parts agree.

Anyone has Alex Smith's cell phone?

My sense: Cousins will leave when FA starts. The only question is whether he Redskins will tag him again. That seems unlikely, since the team will then pay him $30 million or more next season.

Meanwhile, I'm watching the Buffalo and Jacksonville playoff, with two bad QB's. Both seem to need a QB as good as Cousins.

Yep, that was some terrible QB play. Could definitely see Cousins as a big improvement there.

Meanwhile, Kansas played pretty well against the Titans, but as always Reid became hyper-conservative in the playoffs.

That game was not lost because of Alex Smith. With a good RB, he's solid. It's a shame our running game is non-existent, though.

I didn't attend Kirk Cousins discussion because it is to far, about 800 miles, but have read the newspaper accounts. First, let me say that I truly believe that newspapers slant everything to make their story more shocking, controversial or to slant it so it fits the newspapers agenda. One question and answer stood out in my mind though. That was the question about his being concerned about his salary preventing the team from getting better players for other positions. His answer was that the Steelers do it, or something close. He is right. The Steelers, Patriots, Saints and other teams manage their cap space while paying many players big, big time. Why can't the Redskins do that? It seems that every year, there is a concern about cap space and how they loose good players (Garcon comes to mind) because of the lack of cap space. Are they not supposed to have a cap management Guru? If that is Allen, no wonder it is messed up. My vote (for what little it is worth) would be to get rid of Allen. He was a failure in Tampa and has been a failure here. I am not sure about Doug Williams. Does he have any experience handling the cap? If he does, I have never read about it. That doesn't mean he doesn't have experience, it just means that I have never read that he does

Invite him next year. You KNOW we're gonna need at least one more player.

My friend, though the building is still there, they haven't been opened in years. The owner who owns (or owned) about 75% of the liquor stores in the area was arrested many years ago with charges including fraud, underage sales, and many other business crimes. Now it's just an old building that we may pass and remember the good ole days.

First, let me point out that the FO is not managed by guys that have much of a clue about the NFL and there's really little chance that they will make good decisions regarding Cousins + given how they've treated him, it's most likely that he's not interested in staying here

we keep hearing that the Redskins have to try and keep Cousins - I understand that having a good QB is very important but it's also very important to have a FO that has a clue about what to do - this is the first area that we need to address then we can figure out what to do going forward about the QB - Cousins might be more inclined to stay if he thought the FO here would be different than it has been

there's little doubt that having a really good back up QB is also very important - this franchise has not done well depth wise at any position

Jason La Canfora is now projecting that the Redskins will Transition Tag Cousins ....
This saga is already ridiculous and the Skins have allowed it to fester in a way most organizations could never fathom. They're right back in the same spot for three straight years with a top-10 quarterback (top seven or eight, I would surmise). So at this point you have to try to think how Dan Snyder and Bruce Allen would approach this backward quandary, and not just let logic and reason be your guide. After giving Cousins $44 million for two years, and fostering a hostile climate with their fanbase in the process, they can't just let Cousins just walk now. Cousins won't entertain any offers until the tag window closes, and this owner will be destroyed in Washington if he doesn't at least retain Cousins' services then.
The transition tag saves them potentially $6 million and, with these sides nowhere close on Cousins' fair market value, it allows another team to set that market for them. Sure, if the Skins can't match an offer sheet they get no compensation (as opposed to a likely third-round comp pick in 2019 should they merely let him hit the market), but that's almost beside the point now. If someone else structures a deal in the way Washington deems too rich, then the team can leave the situation on its terms. And maybe a trade comes from a tag. As for the interested teams, the Browns' previous front office would have been at the head of the list, but I don't see that now with John Dorsey at the helm (more on him next). The Broncos and Cardinals might make sense too, but the team I believe will make the most concerted effort to land Cousins is the Jets. They have the want and the ability and more cap space than you would ever need, and they won too many games to have a top QB fall to them in the draft.

I this this is the best course of action for the Skins. With the draft having multiple QB’s and a good number of QB’s hitting the FA market, I think the price for Cousins is going to come down a bit this year. If you can get a Smith, Keenum, or Brigdgewater for 5-10 mil less than Cousins I think you do it??

I agree, but then again, that's the problem - this FO does not make a lot of good decisions

Kirk Cousins is a good NFL QB but the Redskins are not going to have to pay a lot of money to get a good NFL QB and there could be a good one available at #13 that we can get for the future

be nice to have an FO with better people in charge too

I'd like to draft a few more stud defenders and go to a 4-3. This would have Kerrigan rushing the passer and run stopping more while covering less. It would have a slow LB in the middle instead 2 slow LBs at ILB and another slow one at OLB on the left. We already have better personnel for a 4-3. Let's get all the way there.

Gruden will scheme guys open and move the ball with just decent personnel on offense. I'd love to have a true dual threat RB and a solid game manager at QB with a killer defense.

Current 4-3 depth chart anyone???

DE Smith ?
DT Ioannidis
DT Hood
DE Kerrigan

OLB Gallette ?
MLB Spaight ?
OLB Brown

CB Norman
CB Breeland

SS ?
FS Swearinger

Seems like we could be aggressive with a group like this in a pass happy league.

Well probably end up with a guy drafted with the "the best player available" philosophy.

Seeing the huge holes we have practically everywhere on both Offense and Defense,
that could end up being a good thing :p

One more thing: I wouldn't rule out a huge cache of picks by a late trade for Cousins. Most probably from Denver. Just my gut feeling.

Love the theory!! Where does Allen fit in? I think Foster would be better at the Mike. Gallett more suited for a third down rusher. We really need a S....it's been an issue since ST passed away.

I, also, like this. Maybe Su'a Cravens at SS?

Draft defense, OL, RB, WR. The Redskin draft would need a hit on every pick, but that's the test of every NFL GM group. Yes, Kirk Cousins will leave, so it's time for Colt McCoy and, maybe, a vet QB like Sam Bradford. However, I predict that the Redskins will use their first round pick on Baker Mayfield...if he's available. Another Heisman QB would fit the way Snyder thinks.

Cravens future is questionable ... at best

both Allen and Anderson from Alabama will become really good NFL players
