Redskins signed No. 232 overall pick ILB Steven Daniels to a four-year, $2.581 million contract. The deal includes a $77,296 signing bonus.

A two-down thumper, Daniels will compete for a role behind Will Compton, Mason Foster, and Perry Riley, but his early-career contributions will likely come on special teams.

Mason Foster - LB - Redskins

Redskins ILBs Mason Foster and Will Compton are expected to battle for the starting job opposite Perry Riley.

The Redskins have confirmed Riley will start, but the other inside linebacker job is open. Foster played well as a starter over the last six games including the playoffs last season while Compton struggled down the stretch. Foster could be the slight favorite entering camp, but this should be a true competition.

It'd be really cool to see Daniels force his way into early down action.

If Riley is the best we can do at one of those positions we're in trouble. I'd rather they take their chances with Compton and Foster starting.

Hence Cravens receiving the LB playbook to start. I would prefer any of the LB's over Riley. We know what we have there and it isn't much.

It's odd that the coaches seem to have a much more favorable opinion of Riley than some here. I guess they just don't know what they are seeing on game film.

We're kind of a long way off from knowing the final roster. Gruden has said that, as of now, Perry Riley is one of the starting inside linebackers. That could change. Maybe they want to see more from either Mason or Foster. Maybe they acquire someone on the waiver wire once teams start making cuts. Maybe Riley is a backup. Maybe he remains a named starter. Riley is costing the team $5.058MM this season and it only costs $1.05MM to release him so that's also still a possibility. To be clear, I'm not saying I know more than the coaching staff. I am saying Riley's performance last season and the season before was terrible, and the numbers support that claim. He was supposed to be the replacement for London Fletcher and learned from playing with Fletcher. But Riley is no Fletcher. He's not even close. There will be other options. It remains to be seen whether Riley will still be a named starter in four months.
