Redskins Should Use Exclusive Francise with Cousins

If they don't quickly come to terms with Cousins I think they should use the more expensive Exclusive Franchise tag so no other teams can negotiate. If they use the non exclusive some other team might offer more than they Skins or be more attractive to Cousins. The Skins would get 2 first round picks for compensation. If I was managing Houston or one of the other team desperate for a QB I would rather spend 2 first rounds for Cousins who has played at a top ten level and might for years than spend 1 first draft pick for some college QB.

Imagine the irony if Cousins signs with the Rams and goes to LA. Several other teams might be in the mix also including philly and Denver. Now the bright side of using the non exclusive tag is you get the two picks. So if SM or DS are not totally sold on Cousins they get to really pay market value in a bidding competition and avoid over committing. Potentially you could draft a QB in the first round and have an extra first round pick in 2017.

My perefence would be to go all in and sign Cousins to a good long term deal before FA or use the exclusive tag while you continue the discussions. After 20 some years of wondering the Skins a very talented franchise QB and need to lock him up.

OldSchool, Regardless of tag, I think the Redskins have the option to match any offer rather than let him leave.

Absolutely... and they also have the opportunity to negotiate the cost to the other team... They can even negotiate MORE than 2 #1's

Lock him up and build the rest of the team. What good is having two extra first round picks and no QB? Remember a couple years ago when we spent a bunch of picks on two QBs, went through a rocky period, and only one of them panned out in the end? Lets not do that again.

Something else to consider: we're a decent team now, so we won't be picking at the top of the draft anymore. If we want to use one of those Cousins franchise picks on the best QB available, we'd have to trade up to do it. Not worth it.

For some time now it's been very clear to me that OS does not have a clue ...

I will admit that he's better than me when it comes to being able to assess who is the better QB for the Redskins ... ABSOLUTELY

is there anyone here that thinks I am very knowledgeable - EXACTLY

it takes one to know one - therefore - I am happy to point out that OS knows next to nothing - welcome to the club

OS - I think this site and the Redskins are a lot better off letting Scot & the FO make the decisions here - that was an uninformed post

NEWS FLASH - this franchise is now being run by people that know what they're doing ...

IF Dan Snyder has anything to do with the product on the field, it does not matter who we have at QB

geez - get real guys, let's let these guys continue to remake this franchise - they've surely earned our trust

You guys are right the Skins retain the right to match the terms of any offer sheet Cousins signs. If the Skins elect not to match the offer Cousins goes to the other team and Skins get two picks. This could set up a very interesting dynamic where a team with an interest in sabotaging the Skins like Dallas or Philly could engage in negotiations with Cousins to elevate the price and force the Skins to use more of their cap.

A game of chicken ensues with sincere suitors and perhaps others like the Cowboys or Eagles participating in the hopes of getting the Skins to eat more salary cap. If they overplay their hand a team could back into signing Cousins to a rich contract and giving the Skins two first round picks. Also Cousins risks signing an rich offer sheet with a team he really doesn't want go and getting stuck going if the Skins don't want to pay that much.

We know that Cousins wants to play for the Redskins and the Redskins want Cousins to play here

it's going to happen

I wouldn't waste much time worrying about how Cousins might get stolen from Washington. If the FO wants him, we will keep him — there are too many ways to guarantee that we do for us to fail — and I personally think it's obvious that they want him at this point. Cousins is going to be a Redskin for years to come.

you're exactly right FFA - I have to try and not overreact this off season as I have in the past

this FO has made great strides and there's really no reason to think they will not continue to do so - priority #1 is getting Cousins signed and both parties will get a contract in place that is fair to everyone at the appropriate time

it depends on which Franchise tag they use on Cousins. the exclusive Franchise tag does not allow him to sign with other teams in anyway. the franchise tage allows him to sign and we get 2 #1 picks.

Id take the number 1 picks. Just imagine- 2 number 1 picks for a fourth round pick who can barely complete a pass longer than 10 yards? What a steal for the Skins. Just imagine getting 2 first rounders for a Nick Foles-type player. We would be awesome.

Me too. Of course, it's highly unlikely - at least for a team with early picks.

It is at least imaginable that Denver would surrender the #32 and whatever they have next year but I doubt that too. Wouldn't hurt to try, though.

We'd still have the option to match the offer ??

I doubt that they have to use the Exclusive Franchise Tag with Cousins but it really does not matter - this FO has a plan - there's little doubt that this FO will continue to find a way to get out of the huge hole that we found ourselves in because of Dan Snyder - with or without Cousins

We were fortunate to find a way to win the NFC East in 2015 - I'm sure these guys will find a way to have Cousins playing QB here but there is no way they will enter into a stupid deal with Cousins OR any player, like Dan Snyder has done since 1999

Its simple - we don't need to and I'm confident that they will not be going down that road again - been there, done that

This FO just needs a little more time & a few more drafts to get us back into the playoffs each season no matter who is playing or coaching here
