Belichick elects to kick in OT

I'm tired of hearing how you can't question Belichick for his decision to kick after winning the coin toss in OT. Yes, he's a great coach and has been to more SBs than anyone else, but he got this one wrong, just not for the reason everyone is saying. I have no problem with the logic that you might think your defense can stop them and you will win the field position battle. My issue is electing to kick. In that situation, you choose the side of the field you want to defend (with the wind at your back), and let the other team choose to kick or receive.

Asinine decision. In overtime, you take the ball. Every time.

Can you do that? I thought the only choices are to kick, receive or defer? Once you make an election to kick or receive the decision in which goal to defend goes to the other team. I think had they deferred (which I’m not sure you can since there is nothing to defer to) then they would have gotten the choice??
I honestly think the “Genius” got this one wrong, he thought by kicking he had the choice of which goal to defend…did you notice how he clapped it up like it was what he planned all along??

Yes, you can definitely do that. You have the option to kick, receive, or defend either goal (there is no defer in OT).

Ok that make sense...I wonder if it was the coach or player who got it wrong??

Well, the interview with the player after the game indicated that Belichick got it wrong. He said coach told him they wanted to kick if they won the toss, and he questioned him three times to make sure he had it correct, and Belichick confirmed that he should elect to kick.

By his actions...clapping like it was what he wanted to do...I think that's right that Belichick got it wrong.
