Skins' 2015 season a success

I don't want the players thinking this way, but as a fan I'm free to go there . . .

Even if we lose the next two games, in my opinion this year will go down as a success. One of the big off season questions on THN was what each of us would count as an improvement, enough to warrant optimism about what McCloughan is bringing to the team. Probably the most common answer was that we needed to win at least 7 games, and here we are having hit that mark with two games to go and our own playoff destiny in our hands.

It's not just about a raw W-L total, however. Seeing Cousins take over as a starting QB and play well enough to earn the spot next year (and the year after that — sign him, FO! Don't resort to a franchise tag!), plus the success of a high percentage of our drafts picks, tells me that this team is definitely headed in the right direction. We still have holes in the roster, with safety being the best example, but as one of the most injury-bitten teams in the league this year we've also proven that we have quality depth ready to go.

I'm excited to see what McCloughan does with a second full offseason and a foundation to build on. There is no question in my mind that we are going to see progress going into the 2016 season.

But I'll hold off on speculating about that too much, because my point right now is that I already count this year as a solid success no matter what happens. And if we can win on Saturday and clinch the division, I'll upgrade that assessment from "solid" to "great" success.

Thoughts? I suspect I'm not the only one on the board who is ready to call this season what it has been.

Yeah I'm in complete agreement. I know the bar was set low, so being happy at 7-7 is kind of weird. But no matter what happens the rest of the way we are guaranteed to be playing meaningful games right up to the end of the season.

That was the most I was realistically hoping for before the season started. The fact that the team has played better than I hoped, and the division has been so crazy, that's just gravy right now.

even if we lose the next 2 - I think this season has been a huge success - this franchise was in a mess and I was hoping we would see signs of improvement which we clearly have and I'm hopeful that Snyder will continue to let these guys do their thing

we've also seen clear evidence that Kirk Cousins is a lot better than we were led to think possible by the Shanahans in 2013 and Jay Gruden last season - this kid can play QB and could become a franchise level QB - that is HUGE for us going forward - we have some players coming off IR and the FO will undoubtedly continue adding players that we can have some confidence in through free agency and the draft

I would not be surprised at all to see these guys really bring it to the eagles this coming Saturday

No question about it!!! All I wanted back in September was to be playing some meaningful game in December…so I thought the season was a success three weeks ago!!

It's been a success. Even if we make the playoffs I don't see us going far. Having a better direction with the quarterback would is nice. Kirk says he wants to go where he is wanted. Time will tell in 2 months. So I don't think he is interested signing a contract right now. But th4bteam has improved and that's all you want improvement. Maybe in a few years the team is serious contenders.

the Redskins will make it very apparent to Kirk that they really want him to be the QB here and will make him a very good offer based on that - the marketplace for his services will be very high but if he goes for the $ after saying "I just want to feel wanted ..." I hope they don't pay him

IMO - there's no doubt that Kirk Cousins is going to get a great contract and he's staying here - the rest is just media BS

this has been a magical ride for Kirk Cousins and I think he wants to stay here and the FO will make that happen

A GREAT SEASON

I meant having a better direction with qb is nice* and we'll see. I'm sure the team will express interest. And yes could always tag him if no long term deal.

Yes, the season is a success. I will consider it a BIG success if they sign Cousins to a long term contract. Until that happens the season will still be in doubt. I hope they don't balk about the $ or franchise Kirk I want a long term contract and SM to be able to build around Kirk.

Another major accomplishment is the Skins have a coach in Gruden. He might not become a Super Bowl winner but he put his foot down and provided the leadership to commit to Cousins and make it work. Great job Jay!

This really has ended up as a solid season, with a lot of promise for the future. I'm bought in on Cousins (pay the man, Dan!), and McCloughan has started building the foundations of a very competitive roster.

No, and yes. I do want the players thinking this way at least enough to buy into the system and the staff and want to get better next season. There are some pending free agents I'd like to come back.

He's a professional athlete. Of course he is going to "go for the $". He's earned the right to ask for as much money as his agent can negotiate.

Absolutely... one bad hit, and his career (and paycheck) is done. They get paid when they can... if you are a quarterback who sees competition for your services, you take all you can get. It would be stupid to do otherwise. Loyalty won't even buy a cup of coffee...

It's really a moot point - Cousins is going to be here next season and that's all that matters

the money will be whatever it takes - there's really no such thing as 'over paying' a player - they get what the franchise wants to pay them, it's not like they can force the franchise to give them the money - the franchise pays them what they think they have to - to say a player "got too much" just does not make sense in the NFL because the contracts are not guaranteed like baseball - players should get whatever they can and franchises can choose to pay them or not - having Scot & this FO in charge of what Kirk Cousins is worth is critical - he will get a fair deal

2015 is a success because t's very clear the franchise is headed in the right direction and whether any player or coach is back here in 2016 is not near as critical as having Scot McCloughan continue making all of the player and coaching decisions - we're going to be great again & soon

OK let's analyze - is there a chance, even slight, that Scot & the FO here will:
NOT make Kirk Cousins "feel wanted"?
AND
NOT put together a very lucrative contract for him to stay here?

if the answer is yes to either query, then you are delusional or blind ... end of story - Kirk is staying and he's getting a lot of money

now, can we move onto other stupid ideas and breakdowns of posts please? .... although I do enjoy the repartee ....

you're right of course and as usual - good for you

I never claim to be good at anything - I'm a Redskins fan after all

Kirk Cousins is going to get paid an enormous amount of money to play for the Redskins - The Redskins will try to make him feel that they really want him to play QB here - Kirk Cousins may not feel wanted and no matter how much he's offered he may want more money - good for him

there we go - all better now?

what a joke, trying to make out like Kirk Cousins just wants to feel wanted and that we might not pay him enough money

that does not seem like the Kirk Cousins we've gotten to know a little about

I was just pointing out that it was silly to think that Kirk Cousins "just want to feel wanted.." and to imply that he wanted to get paid fairly

how could anyone really think that this franchise under Scot & this FO will not do whatever it takes to have him playing here in 2016

anyone that thinks like that is a moron then again we have a few of those here too

I can see that some here are stressing out a little

could be a lot of fun 'celebrating' the great win next week as you try to be clear about what happened and analyze the game ....

looking forward to hearing from all you knowledgeable fans - not me, I don't have a clue

We get it. If the team wins on Saturday night you'll be on here kind of grudgingly giving them some credit. And if they lose you'll show up on Monday morning to spend the day trolling everyone.

Sounds like fun.

No complaints here, a very successful year! First year with no drama and the players are having fun. I can't wait to see what McCloughin does with the next ten draft picks! I think we all agree that we are heading in right direction. You Like That!
