I just read the following article that makes the case that Bill Callahan remains best free agent acquisition in NFC East. I tend to agree, wonder what others have to say.

I don't want people to take this the wrong way, but have we really seen significant and all around OL improvement from last year? I heard he is also in charge of running playcalling which has been poor.

Based on the product we have seen thus far, I'm not totally impressed --- but based on his pedigree and what he has done with other units in the past, I am very happy he is here. I just am not sure we can look at our OL and say "man, look at what Callahan has been able to do with this group".

Now it has been less than a year, so I am confident he'll get this group close to the top of the NFC as long as the staff stays together long enough.

Personally, I would look at Goldson as our top FA acquisition this year.

I think the impressive thing about the OL is so many inexperienced guys are playing. The OL doesn't create big running holes or take over games but young guys are playing. I think Cousins quick release is really helping the Skins OL. If Robert or Colt, who also operated slower than Cousins when he got opportunities in 2014, was starting we'd have a less favorable view of the OL's performance.

Goldson has been awful on the field. Always one step late. Every play. If he's our top free agent acquisition I'm not impressed.

Considering the right side of our O-line is made up of a bench-warmer-turned-center, a rookie in a new position, and a guy we thought couldn't hack it last year, I'd say he's doing well enough. Lets hold off judgment on Callahan until he's had another draft and another offseason to work on the run game.

I can see both sides of the argument. Frustrating that the run has been so bad for most of the season, but there is truth to the fact that besides Trent, the rest of the line is four young, first year starters for the most part. So I'd lean towards the fact that he's done a pretty good job. Especially because we never seemed to be able to get any draft picks into the o-line lineup when Shanny was here.

Yeah, I don't see how this could even be close. Getting Scot was Snyder hitting a home run.

I think we got insanely lucky for the most part. Snyder got pitched an 70 mph fastball right down the middle. But he didn't screw it up, which is something.

I'd say the new GM and new OL coach.

GM has begun to make the Redskins an organization again. It take a moment to destroy an organization...like a building. Less time to knock it down than to build it.

The OL is the engine of the offense...as Joe Gibbs proved year after year. Three SB wins using three different QB's and three different main RB's. One center: Jeff Bostic. Joe Jacoby started all the games, although he moved from LT when the Redskins got Jim Lachey. "LT" meaning both left tackle and Lawrence Taylor, who never (or almost never) had a sack when he was one-on-one with Lachey. Russ Grimm left guard in two of those wins and an important backup in the third.

Gibbs proved that again in his second term. I was at the Swamp for the second Giants game in 2007. Late-season Sunday night game. Freezing rain splattering ice pellets off the artificial turf. Joe Bugels OL slowly pounded the Giants into surrender. Favorite memory: Q4, Clinton Portis off left tackle, Portis with his hand on a blocker's back, guiding the blocker left and right, aiming the block.

+1 - holding my breath - I really think that Snyder thought that bringing in Cerrato was going to help him make the franchise better because of what he'd done with the 49ers - IMO the main reason we're in this mess is not so much Cerrato as that Snyder interfered and Cerrato was a "yes man" - McCloughan also has a track record but there was a bit of 'baggage' as well and he seemed to really want to make amends for that ... plus for whatever reason it appears that this time Snyder's letting the franchise be 'managed' by McCloughan and Allen

like I said, I'm hopeful that the idiot owner has finally realized that he needs to let the franchise be run like other franchises & not by him

McCloughan and Callahan were really key additions to this year's success ... plus the division we're in

I'd like a larger sample size than one season with marginal and suspect talent at twenty of the twenty-five roster positions. McCloughan came into the job with a maximum of eight irreplaceable players on the roster. Callahan came into the job with one exceptional offensive lineman and nine with limited skill, limited experience, or both. The line would have been marginal with Lichtensteiger at center all season but it's downright putrid with LeRibeus. He doesn't know snap counts, he misses blocks entirely, he misses pass protection audibles, and he gets destroyed man-to-man. He's the primary reason the team has virtually no rushing attack. Get Callahan a real center and give him another season and I'll wager the running game returns to a staple of the offense.

I'm going to throw a curve ball here for the sake of discussion. My nomination is for the blocking TE that we acquired over this past week. I don't think it's a coincidence that we saw a minor uptick in the running game and overall a major uptick in the offense. If this is truly how the offense is supposed to look when balanced... Then he turned the page for us and at the right time.

Quinton Dunbar is coming on strong. At this point he may not be best free agent acquisition but given he switched positions and is now playing CB even though he was selected as WR is very impressive. i

Pierre Thomas is already making his presence felt by the opposition... With so many teams having injuries at RB it's a marvel he was available so deep into the season

Im going with Terrence Knighton also known as "Potroast" who was the best free agent addition. But picking up Pierre Thomas has to be right up there as well.

We didn't draft him, he was a(n undrafted) free agent.

Things work a little differently this year. Bill Callahan’s addition to the coaching staff added a third member to the game-planning and play-calling process. During training camp, Gruden explained that Callahan selects the run calls and that he and McVay handle the play selection on passing downs.

Seems like Callahan was calling the run plays early on, but it shifted to McVay. But it appears like McVay is the "mouthpiece" in calling the plays to Cousins, and that Gruden, McVay, and Callahan all gameplan together. Gruden still has the final say.

The way I read it, on game day, on 2nd and 3, Gruden does not say "I want to run, so call the run you want." What happens is, during the week, many run plays are put in for the given opponent by Callahan. This is how Callahan "is in charge of the run calls." But on game day, Gruden selects the running play from the list ... I think.

I think a similar thing happened back in the day with Gibbs and Breaux with some input from Bugel.
