Ready for the first McShay mock draft?

Probably not. And so awesome that its mid December and we're not talking about draft picks. Here's Todd McShay's first mock draft pick for us though for anyone who doesn't have the ESPN insider account:
16. Washington Redskins
Michael Thomas, WR, Ohio State Buckeyes*
Thomas lacks elite speed as a vertical receiver, but he is a very good route runner. He knows how to use his 6-3, 210-pound frame when the ball is in the air, displaying outstanding overall ball skills (17 TDs over the past two seasons). Thomas has enough burst to turn a short pass into a long gain.

we are enjoying this season ....
FWIW - I wonder why Todd has the Redskins at #16 in the 2016 draft - I think, at this time we're at #21 ....

I was wondering the same thing. Don't we move down to 21st (12th from the bottom) if we win the division? It might be even better if we win out and finish 9-7.

McShay
First Round: First Half (Picks 1-16) v. Second Half (Picks 17-32):
McShay makes majority of his correct predictions in the first half of the first round with 42.5% of his predictions being correct. That number is significantly boosted by McShay’s consistent success with the first four picks of each draft. On the back half of the first round, McShay does not fare so well: only 8.9% of his second half predictions have proved correct.
Strengths:
McShay offers some useful insight to into predicting which teams will draft offensive tackles (52.2%), wide receivers (47.1%) and linebackers (46.2%). As we alluded to earlier, McShay has been consistent with the first four picks in each draft. In fact, he has only missed one of those picks in the last five years. Bengals fans should keep a close eye on McShay’s mocks, as he has consistently picked their first round draft choice correctly.
Weaknesses:
While McShay is great at picking the top four, he is awful at picking who will go fifth. Sorry, Buccaneers fans. McShay has issues with predicting players at the running and defensive backs position. McShay is only correct in predicting running backs 15.4% of the time, and has not correctly predicted a running back since the 2008 NFL Draft. Considering defensive backs have been one of the most popular selections in the last five years, McShay’s 17.4% rate of correct predictions is sad to say the least.

This is definitely something that we need. No more short receivers.

I'm ok with short receivers. Odell Beckham Junior is 5'11", and Antonio Brown is 5'10". I'd be good with either of those...you?
What we need more than anything is speed and quickness. We need more people who can turn short passes (Gruden throws) into long gains. Right now, we have guys who will turn 5 yard passes into 5 yard passes.
Plus we really can't count on Desean much, can we?

Would definitely be nice. As much as I'd like to see some first round talent added to the defense, I could understand this selection.
Keyshawn Johnson's nephew no less.

Man I heard that on the radio the other day, had no idea. He looks big on TV and definitely plays big.

Let me clarify, I'm not ok with all of our receivers being under 6 feet... As has been the case for the last decade. ODB is complimented by taller receivers and a very freakishly tall TE. Antonio Brown is complimented by tall and rangy receivers in Wheaton and Bryant. Heath Miller is also hulkingly big.
IF we were to get someone who was 1/4 as good as ODB, we'd still need a tall WR to compliment him. We do have a receiver who is quick/fast in DJackson.

Wheaton is 5'11". Bryant is a lot bigger, but he's also a speed guy, not a possession guy. Miller has been injured and not great this year (I had him in fantasy), and I'd take Jordan Reed over him in a heart beat.
And the other options around OBJ are honestly terrible.
We do have a receiver who is quick/fast in DJackson.
But we can't count on him at all. He's played a full season 2 of the 8 he's been in the league and he's getting older and has basically been unavailable for us this year.
We need someone to replace the speed he brings because when he's out, this offense overall has zero speed.

Whether or not they're terrible, they are there and they are tall. And most importantly they factor in the most, in the area in which we've historically had the least success... The redzone.
I'm not saying and/or arguing that Miller is better than Reed. That's not my point. I'm simply stating that in addition to the players you mentioned, they are complimented by freakishly tall receivers. We have NONE. That fun-bunch sh*t is a thing of the past. It's not coming back. We need size, and that's Scot McCloughans trademark trait that he looks for in players.
I"m not saying we can't use an Antonio Brown, everyone can. But none of the teams that you mentioned are fielding a team of short receivers like we have and have done. So honestly, IDGAF where we get a tall receiver from or what round he is choosen in. As long as we get one or two, that can contribute.

I heard someone say before one of our games that the Redskins might not bring DeSean Jackson back ... what is his status and why not?

What about Hankerson, Malcom Kelly or Devin Thomas? They were all 6'2. Then there was Gaffney at 6'1. We also have 3 WR at 6'0 currently. Carrier is 6'4. My point is that height doesn't matter for squat if you aren't crazy fast, quick, and run good routes. Talent comes in many forms. Height is great, but I wouldn't take it over any of the three items I described above.
As far as NYG WRs and receptions, they have OBJ at 5'11, Randle 6'2, and Harris 5'10. Their TE is 6'2 and is targeted 4 times a game on average.

Height is a good asset to have as a WR, but a bad WR that's merely tall isn't going to help us out. They have to be talented and force DEFs to respect them. Did having Kelly and Thomas help Moss -- not at all because they sucked.

ANY DRAFTING prior to Scot McCloughan is NULL AND VOID. None of it exists anymore as it was run by a bunch of morons.

He costs $9m to keep on the roster next year and he's proven to be risky with injuries.
I don't know though. We're in good shape cap wise next year and DJax is still an impact player. I'd be surprised to see him released without having a legit alternative in place first.

thanx and I agree with that - the guy's a weapon and so far has proven to be a good teammate ...

Yeah I've been pleasantly surprised about his personality. Kind of expected him to be more of a me me me guy. For the most part I think he's just gone out and done his job and done it pretty well.

It was a joke..... but to prove the point that size doesn't = quality. But honestly I do agree as long as the size is coupled with talent. If you look at the top 10 WRs, 8 of them are over 6'1.
I do disagree that Brown wouldn't have the #s if the other WRs weren't tall. I think it is more the fact that the #2 and 3 WRs average about 18 yards PER CATCH and can stretch the field. He's also got a decent QB.

Tall helps, but it's really about vertical leap. Can the guy go up and get the ball?

I will add - we need receivers that have the attitude to go up and get the ball.

If Scot McCloughan insists on a wide receiver, which doesn't at all sound like Scot McCloughan, I think I'd be OK with this pick or Thomas:
Laquon Treadwell*, WR, Ole Miss
Height: 6-2. Weight: 229.
Projected 40 Time: 4.50.
Projected Round (2016): 1-2.
12/5/15: This year, Treadwell has 76 receptions for 1,082 yards and eight touchdowns. He hasn't shown the speed to separate from defensive backs, thus he's not a high first-round talent. Treadwell is a possession receiver for the NFL. He is good after the catch and can win contested passes, but won't stretch a defense with speed. Treadwell is a tremendous blocker.

Why not? You don't think McCloughan will take the highest rated guy on his board if its a WR?
I don't think he'll insist on a wide receiver. But drafting around 16-20, I guess its possible that could be a receiver.

No matter who Scot adds through the draft or free agency - there's a lot more confidence that the franchise will better than we used to have ...
Scot still has some work to do but so far he's done very well

His record speaks for itself.
Unrelated to your post, my comment about not wanting short receivers was with this fact in mind. Scot makes good decisions, so there's no room in the equation for a bust. A Malcolm Kelly is highly improbable with him.
