Jay Gruden terms

Can someone tell me the difference with the terms, "Its a code red" (Gruden talk around the bye) and "turn up the heat".
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/foo ... s-players/ https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/r ... story.html

You weren't turning up the heat when you said its a code red?
In the Sean McCavay topic we saw that Sean keeps track of the QB and Jay calls plays. I personally think Kirk has improved, we shall see in the future.
So Jay can't take credit for Kirk and the play calling and preparation has been questionable. Lets just start fresh

This is tweets about the Pats game. Can he coach better? He keeps saying they need to!

If I have to hear Jay Gruden say the phrase "bang bang play" again... freaking hell Gruden.

It's all coachspeak. He can't say what he's actually thinking which is probably more along the lines of "If this team had more talent I wouldn't look like the next guy getting fired." Or perhaps "I'd really like it if you guys would act like my job depends on how we play these games because it does." But honestly, how much can be held against Gruden when he's got a 4th string backup quarterback starting, 4/5ths of the offensive line is rookies, the defense was a liability before all the injuries and now the top three cornerbacks have all been out multiple games, etc, etc, etc.

Sports is notorious for controlling the message, which is why everyone speaks in cliches. We've really got to put the pedal to the metal this week and put our foot down and drop the hammer and nail the coffin shut and have a real team effort and win one for the Gipper!

So players and the media are basically saying the Redskins need to execute the basics. WTF? Fat Stupid Gruden has been here 24 games plus 2 preseasons and his team cannot execute the basics? Isnt that what he was on RG3 for? Apparently the whole team cant execute the basics. What is the common denominator? Fat stupid Gruden.

He has got to go. He looks lost. His teams look lost. And self admittedly they cannot even play basic football at the NFL level.

Exactly what you would expect from an AFL Coach.

Fire Gruden. The guy doesn't know what he is doing. From QBs to fundamentals, he is just in over his head like Ryan Clark said.

I don't know about you other fellows but I've been playing/watching football for over 50 years so I know it takes years for a putrid team to become good. I've seen a couple of quick turnabouts but I can't remember a team that has been awful for years become good in just a couple of seasons. Every championship team I can remember was several seasons in the making.

I am pleased with the progress Gruden is making. Transforming a team and a roster as poor as the Redskins is a multi year project but I see progress. I would be complaining if I wasn't seeing progress but I am seeing progress. The team lacks talent but Scot improved it with the draft this year and I think Jay is going to win 6 or 7 games this year, which would a solid year. The 2015 team looks much better to me than 2014 or 2013 teams.

The Skins played poorly against the Giants and the receiving corps looked stage struck against the Patriots but they battled and were in it to the end against the other 6 teams. I want a team that plays hard and a franchise that seems well run. Snyder grossly mismanaged things in the past but at least for now he's letting Scot and Jay run the show and I think if Snyder stays out of way for a few years Scot and Jay will steadily improve the team. I'm not saying Gruden is a great coach but I think he's making headway and with Scots help will produce a winner.

If they are competitive in 6 of the next 8 and win 3 or 4 of them I will be very happy with the progress and optimistic about the prospects of getting to .500 or better in 2016. I can imagine a 2016 team with two or three new starters and a better offense with another top pick on the line, a good blocking tight end and a pick down field receiver to help spread the field for Cousins who I expect to reach another performance level in his second year starting secure of his spot with a multi year starters contract under his belt.

I may be dreaming but I am not a Pollyanna when it comes to the Skins I just think Snyder somehow made two good hires that are compatible and able. I believe things have finally turned for the Redskins so I am going to enjoy the rest of this season with my feet on the ground and renewed hope. HTTR!

I don't think that will happen. If thats the case, he will have a much better shot keeping his job. After the season when its done, no predictions. It will be clear.

Who wins the coinflip and turns the ball over to the Patriots when your defense hasn't been playing well? The whole team looks lost. Kirk rather checkdown than go for it. Weak, weak, weak!

Gruden's team looked horrible and that was coming off a bye week. What do we need to give him? Three or four weeks in between games to get his team ready to do the basics? The guy cannot coach in the NFL.

Rumor was Snyder wanted to fire Gruden after last season and I believe it. If DS is in Fat Gruden's corner RG3 would be gone. RG3 is the canary in the coal mine as to the opinion of DS to the extent that ownership trusts this stupid AFL Coach and his idiot assistant McVay. DS, and rightfully so, does not trust nor believe in Jay Gruden's assessment of RG3 and perhaps the whole team. Jay Gruden is fired-he is just to stupid to know it yet. Perhaps DS is a problem, but if he fires Jay and McVay, he will not be making a bad decision.

Scott's contract gives him total control over the roster. I don't think that means coaches. But that doesn't mean DS will pay for whatever Scott wants.

Scott is not stupid. He doesn't own the team. He can get fired.

He will build the team but he will always have to have deference to the owner, just like every GM in football has to. That is what he means when he says he likes to build consensus. He has control but....the owner is still the owner and one cannot be so stupid to bite the hand that feeds you.

Gruden is 7-17. That gets you fired in this league. Let's not even talk about how bad the team looks. How unprepared they are in general. BTW- Zorn was 12-20. Gruden has to go 5-3 in the next 8 games (no way) to equal Zorn. 6-2 to beat him by one game. This is how bad Gruden is.

So the cap penalties have nothing to do with the state this franchise is in? And we're going to hold Shanahan's inability to draft decent players against Gruden as well? Seems fair.

Gruden is out of his depth. This team is in a building phase, it takes years of coaching experience to rebuild a team. If Gruden moved into an established team he could manage and move the team along from there, he is a bright guy. But this team has problems in many areas and he hasn't had the experience to recognize and solve them, he's never served years of apprenticeship under a leading coach. He's lost.

are you really serious? you think that the word "fair" has anything to do with ANYTHING in the NFL - there's no such word - everybody in the NFL plays dirty - Jay Gruden is most likely losing his job and IMO he's done as good a job as he can, considering what he's had to work with

I'm saying that he should lose his job simply because he hasn't done what Dan Snyder paid him to get done - there's nothing "fair" about working here - Jay Gruden wanted to be the HC for Dan Snyder and he knew exactly what that entailed and he did not get it done - end of story

Norv Turner was a good OC as well

Teams aren't rebuilt by coaches. They're rebuilt by good GMs.

Thus cementing Robert Griffin's reputation as a coach killer.

In other words, "I want him fired because my favorite player got benched."

We all saw Gruden talk badly about Robert.

Did anyone see the Desean Jackson saga starting?

Desean-
“I can’t call the plays for me, I can’t throw the ball to myself, so when the coaches and the quarterback call my number, I’ll be there and doing what I need to do,” “I’m not the one making the drops, I can’t really speak for that,” Jackson said. “As professional athletes, we get paid a lot of money to go out there and perfect the job. That’s what we need to do. So, if we need to correct something in practice and do something better, that’s what we need to do as professionals.”

Jay-
“The problem is, DeSean wasn’t here in OTAs and he missed a lot of training camp and he missed the first eight games, so to have the cohesiveness with the quarterback coming right out of the chute would probably be a little bit wishful thinking.”

This saga doesn't seem to be getting much traction which leads me to believe there's not much of a saga. Pretty innocuous. If this was a big deal, it would have been wall to wall talk on the radio this week already.

not that there's anything unusual about that - that's the way it's been here - is there any doubt that the only reason that Griffin is still here is because he's Dan's favorite player?

exactly

Griffin loses that reputation just as quickly as Cousins loses his reputation for turning the ball over - by winning games

ABSOLUTELY

good teams don't need great QBs or great HCs, they just need to be 'built' by guys that know what players are needed to make the team better

Did anyone watch Gruden's post-game press conference?

Definitely did not heap praise on Cousins and made sure he praised the o-line.

So much for that "babying Cousins" rhetoric.
