Lets talk run defense

What happened against Atlanta to let them run so easily to our right? Was the OLB shifted for pass rush? Was that Rileys' job? Was the FS supposed to pick up on the runner? Why weren't halftime adjustments made?
Lots of questions, lets discuss instead of bashing Cousins.

Matty Ice QBR 36. Julio Jones 67 yards. Those two stats alone tell you the story. The game plan was "Make them beat us on the ground." A lot of work went into protecting the undermanned secondary against a very good pass attack... They did what they intended. The loss was NOT on the run defense.

I think there was a good deal of emphasis put on ATL's passing attack. The holes Freeman got at the end of the game were HUGE. We didn't blitz that often, but we were getting adequate pressure on passing downs. I think our DC was trying to limit the "big play" --- which is understandable. I also believe that even though they were running well, our philosophy in the final 2 mins was a "bend but not break" one. We were essentially giving them rushing plays. It ended up not being a good philosophy, but those 2 factors are why I think our run defense went bad.

The job of an ILB is so diverse. They can't be strickly a run or pass guy. They are more reacting to the personell, situation, etc. and making reads. Riley is our QB out there. So in that respect, he should have been able to make those defensive reads. Regardless, our rushing defense hasn't been great. Our opponents average 4.4 ypc this year -- which is tied for 8th HIGHEST in the NFL.

This all being said, right now we are 16th in the NFL in expected points contributed by defense (which is a good barometer on "contribution"). I personally am pleased with that considering the injuries and the fact we were 29th in the same statistic last year.

+1 - all in all the team is playing well - we've lost 2 games we very well could have won and found a way to win one we probably should not have - let's not find too much fault here - we are seeing a better product on the field

hopefully the guys in charge learn from what has happened and we move on

let's look at the positives - this team is showing progress - this is not a W on anyone's calendar - except maybe you know who

That's kind of what I assumed happened, CT. Pick your poison. Seems like in this case that it was the right decision. Yeah they gouged us for 150+ rushing yards, but still prevented the big play from Jones and held them to 19 points. I think it was a reasonable game plan.

It seemed like every time I saw Freeman turn the corner Murphy was being manhandled by Mathews!! He had trouble getting off blocks and setting the edge all day, easily the worst game I’ve seen him play.

Thats what I was seeing as well, I didn't know for sure it was Murphy or not. It seemed they easily turned him out and Freeman had a huge lane. I felt they could've moved a MLB over a step or two as a halftime adjustment.

Saw the same thing... He has previously been strong setting the corner... Run defense has not been his weakness. I have to think it was something that was schemed that simply didn't work... Course, maybe he was just getting his azz kicked.

I've been a strong Murphy supporter, I thought he stepped in and played really well last year and I haven't heard much from him this year. Something will have to be done because we already know where the Jets are going to run the ball.

Let's not forget Murphy wasn't even supposed to be starting. Galette got injured and went on IR.
