Grab A Snickers - RGIII Is Not Going Anywhere For A While

In a move that will likely surprise many in the sports world, the Redskins plan to keep Griffin as their second-string quarterback, team sources say, despite the hefty risk of a potential hit that would cost the team $16.2 million in the case of injury.
http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap300000 ... uarterbackIt's possible he could still be cut between now and Tuesday but it's looking more and more unlikely.

I don't think the risk is "hefty." Unless I'm mistaken, the only thing that has to happen for us to avoid the fine is that he pass a physical around this time next year, right? Given that he's unlikely to play much this year, if at all, I'm just not worried about it.

I'm not worried about it either. Robert's been benched twice before and has not been a distraction. What has been a distraction is the team's refusal to pick a quarterback and stay with that quarterback for the duration. Kirk has been named the starting quarterback. The only way he should not be playing is due to injury. If he's benched for "ineffectiveness" all it does is send yet another message to the team that they have no quarterbacks. But if Kirk is injured, which is a real possibility with this offensive line, is Robert the #2 or is Colt the #2? CSN is reporting Robert is the #2, so there's the injury risk factor that guarantees the $16.2 million involved in that scenario.
The intelligent decision would certainly be to keep RGIII off the field entirely but in that case why keep him at all? You're paying him the $6.7 million either way unless you can trade him.

The big compromise...Snyder lets them name Cousins the starter but doesn't let them cut RG.
If they are worried about a injury. A why pick up his option, B why not cut him?

From what I can piece together, picking up the option was a hedge against RGIII improving and growing into a competent starter. At that point in time that was the team's hope and the plan they were working on. If RGIII became even a mediocre starter, his $16 million price tag in 2016 would have been a good deal for the team.
Of course, he didn't improve, so the team lost on its bet. Easy to criticize in retrospect.
As for not cutting him, I think Rich Tandler made some good points:
http://realredskins.com/2015/09/03/need ... he-roster/A summary:
- They'll be paying him anyway.
- If they cut him, we might pay him to play for a division rival (ala DeSean Jackson, who was paid more money by the Eagles than the Redskins in 2014).
- Injuries to Cousins and/or McCoy might make starting RGIII the Skins best option — hard to do that when he's not on the team!
- Griffin is still young and this is just another chance for him to try to grow out of his issues. McCloughan has said before that he doesn't like giving up on young QBs. (Especially when you are paying him anyway.)
- No teams interested in trading for him right now, but that can change with injuries early in the season. Trade value might develop, and we'd look like idiots if we cut RGIII for no reason when we could have just held onto him for a few weeks and then gotten draft picks in return.

This is solely to drum up his trade value.
I'd be pissed if I were McCoy.

He has to pass the physical at the start of the league year in March.

FWIW:
Colt McCoy has been told that he’ll be listed as No. 2 on the depth chart for the Week One game against the Dolphins, Albert Breer of NFL Network reports.

Not surprising. I don't think RGIII has been cleared to play yet, has he?

According to Keim, people "in the building" are not happy that he's remaining on the roster.
Unless this is a bluff to try and wait out to test the trade market, I don't see why he'll be listed #2 on the depth chart. If you want to keep him, fine. But to put him above McCoy is a slap in the face to the fan base.

I get keeping him on the roster as a 3, but I don't understand at all why he's the primary backup now. So now he's going to be put in as the backup, and if he gets injured and can't pass the season ending physical, they're on the hook for 16 million next year (well over 10% of your salary cap) for a guy they don't want?
Makes no sense.

I agree! No way can I understand this decision.

I don't get... and have no respect for... a reporter going "on the record" with information that was sourced "off the record"... It's BS, and cowardly... and, as often as not, is nothing but a self-serving rumor. It is, simply, crap. Don't expect me to believe or feed into jack without the name of a source...

Has Griffin passed the concussion test? I think him passing the concussion test is a precursor to a decision about his place on the roster.

Does anyone think maybe this is a way(at Dandy Dans request or otherwise) to get him out of the limelight and to let the QB coaches work with him to see if he can get better without all the pressure? I mean he has intangibles other than his inability to be a pocket passer that are useful. Maybe this is one last hurrah by the organization to try to get a return on what they gave up for him. He is a smart kid, maybe he can learn. I just hate that we can't seem to get a guy to pan out at QB.

Why release him and lose a ton of money? Maybe another team will suffer an injury and offer up a pick for him.

NO ONE will be willing to eat his contract.

He has to pass the physical at the beginning of the league year, and if he is on the roster just a few days after that date, the salary becomes fully guaranteed.

The Jets and Eagles are currently sitting with 2 active QB's on their rosters. Bradford could get injured, Fitzpatrick could falter, etc. A trade would not be out of the question.

I doubt it but I do know that you'll be really pissed if RG3 is still here on opening day ....
all I really care about is seeing a better product on the field in 2015 and having Scot be in charge of things for another year or 2 - whether Gruden or Griffin are a part of that is not a big deal to me, at all

No I won't. He'll be the #3 QB. As he should be.

I don't think a trade would happen with his current contract --- unless the skins are prepared to eat a large portion of it. I'd see the Jets bringing back Flynn before RGIII --- especially if they aren't in playoff contention. I could see the eagles bring him in for free, but wouldn't trade anything away for him.
As far as keeping him on the roster, I don't understand why anyone has an issue with it. I sure don't. In fact, I would prefer that we kept him. I agree that he should be most likely #3 on the depth chart, but wouldn't be opposed to being #2. Some may, however, believe it would be less distracting if he were #3 (and I can understand that).
I am still intrigued by RGIII. I think the best thing for him is to be a reserve for a year and see what happens. I wouldn't be opposed to re-signing him to a vet-min 2-3 year type contract (and having him cancel the option) depending on how he responds to his benching, how Cousins plays this year (and if well, what he wants), and whether coaches have seen improvement.

I don't have a huge problem with this move and can understand some of the logic. We've lost a lot on RGIII already, no issue hanging on to him as long as possible to see if we can recoup ANYTHING.
I'm still confused though because reports have been conflicting as to what his role will be. Is he the #3 guys? Or is he seriously the #2 primary backup? That part I just can't fathom.
