If we drafted a QB after 1st round, who and why?

Post by Prowl33 »

So there has been a lot of talk about Mariota, but I think we all agree its a LONG shot we even think about drafting him

It is not a stretch however to think that between rounds 2 and 7 we decide to draft a QB that both Scot and Jay like.

What QB would you like to be selected, what round, and why.... assuming we did take a QB somewhere in this draft.

we could take Mariota at 5 but I doubt it and with all the other positions that we need to find better players for I doubt we're taking a QB in this draft - there's just so much to do that adding another QB at this time is not in the mix

this franchise needs to find out who they really have at QB and I think they'll wait and see how big of a concern that is after this season

if a really good QB 'fell', they may take him but for the first 150 picks we're not looking at QB
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)

I'd like to get Hundley, too, but due to the inflated value of quarterbacks in the draft, I doubt he makes it out of the first round. I think we are more likely to get a shot at Bryce Petty. Of course, we then have to deal with the same lack of pocket experience we had with RG3, but this kid has the arm of Mark Rypien, and movement skills that remind me of Ben Rothlisberger. I do expect we will be taking a project quarterback at some point in this draft. He would be a good one to do that with.

I like Garrett Grayson, can probably get him in 3rd round.

the only players these guys are bringing in here in the next few drafts are those players that they think will make the franchise a better NFL team in 2017 - they are not looking for a QB to get ready or any player at any specific 'position of need'

they just believe you cannot have enough good young football players

if Garrett Grayson is going to be that good of a QB I'm sure he will be on their list, however, I don't see them bringing in a guy in the top 150 on the chance he might help at QB OR any position - doesn't make sense

any player that is added to this franchise in the next 2 years is someone these guys rate very highly and is most likely young

that is what Scot has indicated he thinks will make this franchise better

With ya 110%. This kid seems like a good value at that spot, plus he fits grudens system pretty well as he has some pretty good development in the pocket already... plus he is a finesse thrower, while he has decent arm strength, he is best at putting the ball at the right spot and progressing through his options.

May be a pretty good grab in the mid rounds, could be Scots Russel Wilson gift to us.

We only take a project if we plan to move one of the three we have. I don't think McCoy is going anywhere, or they probably wouldn't have bothered re-signing him. So that leaves Bob and Kirk (not Bob Odenkirk  ). Who do you think we move?

I still like Sean Mannion from Oregon State. I like him more than Mariota personally.

6-6 230 lbs.

sports an NFL-caliber frame, has the arm to make every throw and is a classic drop-back passer with limited mobility. When he feels secure in the pocket and has the time to step into his throws correctly, Mannion's touch on intermediate and vertical passes is as impressive as any quarterback in the country. He lofts the ball with perfect trajectory over the shoulder of his receivers and allows them to go get it, demonstrating pinpoint accuracy to lead his target away from defenders.

Mannion has an easy, natural throwing motion and he's well-versed in coach Mike Riley's pro-style offense, which asks him to take snaps from under center as well as from the gun. While he can drive the ball when needed, it cruises, rather than explodes out of his hand. The result is that Mannion's passes look effort-less but there is some question as to whether he has the top-notch velocity to significantly boost his stock this season.

While I continue to believe that there is still a ton of upside to him, it would have to be Bob. He just doesn't seem to fit in this system at this time. Kirk is much closer.

I want them to focus on the OL and defense this year but if they do draft a QB I like this guy. I saw him play against Rutgers and he was impressive out of the pocket.

Agree 100% on Mannion. He reminds me of a Drew Bledsoe type (best case scenario). Not sure where he is mentally though. His delivery is a little slow IMHO, but he's accurate and has good fundamentals.

If he were around in the mid-later rounds (which I'm not sure will happen), I'd take a shot at him, no question.

I've seen him projected in the 5-6 range lately, but I agree with you that he'll probably go higher than that after his workouts.

I'm going to have to take a closer look at Brett Hundley now that Countertrey has endorsed him. Anytime I read about these guys needing to learn to play from the pocket, I just lose interest. lol.

If we're ever going to take a mid round QB, this seems like it would be a great year to do it. There should be zero pressure to put that QB on the field this year.

Yeah, I'd say the QB I most DISLIKE is Bryce Petty. Bad motion, not accurate, etc. Has absolutely nothing to do with the Baylor connection.

Hundley #s are fantastic. Only 2 issues : he runs a TON and left early (however, he did get his degree). I haven't seen him play so can't really say much on him. The only issue as far as the redskins are involved is that Hundley is projected to be a 2nd rounder (some are saying 1st round) ----- EXTREMELY too early for us to draft a QB IMHO. I wouldn't even consider him an option due to his draft stock at this point. I am thinking if we draft ANYONE, it'll be in the 5th round at the earliest.

I agree that this appears a year for mid-round QBs, but I honestly don't like many of them other than Mannion. There is Petty, Mannion, Greyson, Hundley, Wallace, and Carden --- there are others but I see these as players that are not drafted and instead UFAs. Greyson and Hundley will most likely go before the 2nd or 3rd round --- rounds where better talent and larger needs are still available.

If we did draft Mannion, the real question is who would go????

I think the highlighted comments match what I was trying to say... Someone always over-values the "better" quarterbacks, causing late second round talent to come off the board in the late first round/early second round, and so on. Petty, and others, will be likely to match up with BPA as the late rounds approach. We WON'T be drafting Mannion or Greyson (actually, what I'm saying here is that I WILL BE COMPLETELY BLOWN AWAY if we take a QB before the 5th round).
Responding to "who would go?", as I noted earlier, because I think he is farther from being the player that Gruden needs behind center AT THIS TIME IN MARCH, 2015, Bob would be more likely than Cousins to find himself in a sit down with "the Turk", or packing for Cleveland (assuming minimal cap implications).

Wow. Yeah that would be hard for me to imagine. If I were guessing, I'd probably say Cousins. If nothing else, since we drafted him Cousins has been a reliable and very affordable second string QB. Being on the last year of his contract, I could see them letting him go and drafting "the new Kirk Cousins" to fill the same role. McCoy is the #2 this year and the new guy is prepared to step into that spot in 2016.

Complete guess on my part. I really can't figure out what they honestly think of any of the current quarterbacks.

Guess this settles it.

“It comes down to best available player,” said McCloughan, who earlier this month attended Mariota’s Pro Day. “I’m walking in from the outside in here, saying ‘Okay, I’ve been around a world championship team. I helped another one that made it there – didn’t win it – I kind of have a feeling of what it’s supposed to look like.’ And in San Fran and what we did in Seattle, we understand that we’re not a real deep roster, so let’s not just focus on a certain position, let’s focus on the best football player because we’re not just talking about Year 1, we’re talking about Year 3, Year 5, and you want to be able to re-sign your own guys. You get to the second contracts. We were lucky enough to do that in San Fran and Seattle, and that’s when things start rolling.

“But, just because it’s a quarterback sitting there at 5, and say it is, and that’s the best available player, then we’re going with it. You can never have enough. I was in Green Bay where we had Brett Favre, who won three MVPs in a row, and every year, we drafted a Matt Hasselbeck, an Aaron Brooks, and not that early, but still took quarterbacks.”

nobody really knows at this time and they (Scot & Jay) will not know when they go into the draft ...

they're making it clear that everyone here is on notice that they have to earn their roster spot ...

if any of these QBs don't clearly show a lot of progress from last season, they will not be here for very long

but that goes for every player here - this roster is in for a major overhaul at each and every position and it needs it

Just part of the game... what I thing Scot is doing is nothing more than playing with the heads of a few GM's and owners, in order to get what he REALLY wants... which is for someone to OVERPAY for our #5 pick. He has a range of contingencies, and can pull the trigger on whatever gives the greatest benefit to the team. I don't believe that Marriota will appear that high on HIS board... But someone else may still have a real desire for him if he's on the board at 5.

I honestly dont think Mariota is high enough on his board to go #5 either. Winston might though... but there is no way Winston drops to 5... even if the bucs went another route, the Titans I think will pass on Mariota, they wouldnt pass on Winston.

That's debatable. If a GM believes Jameis Winston is capable of being a franchise QB in the mold of Ben Roethlisburger, he's certainly worth the first pick in the draft. There just isn't any position more valuable than the quarterback.

Player Comparison: Ben Roethlisberger. Both Winston and Roethlisberger are big-armed pocket passers who can make all the throws. They have field vision, anticipation and accuracy. Like Roethlisberger, Winston is really hard to bring down because of his size and strength. Both signal-callers also share the ability to make plays with their feet when they have to. Roethlisberger was a first-round pick, which Winston will be as well. Both players also have had off-the-field controversies, plus Roethlisberger had maturity issues early in his career. The difference is that Roethlisberger has been viewed as a bad guy and teammate at times in his career. Conversely, Winston is said to be a team leader and a well-liked teammate who is good in the locker room.

most GMs would not rate Mariota or Winston as better NFL players than Williams out of USC and maybe others

it's 'debatable' but those that do are mistaken
