I'm curious about this signing if it happens though. Part of the reason the Bears are letting him walk is because they're moving to a 3-4 defense, and he is supposedly more suited to a 4-3.

At 6-foot-1 and 300 pounds, Paea is more suited to play in a penetrating 4-3 front than in a two-gap system, which requires more size at the position. That’s part of the reason the Bears didn’t reach out during the offseason to make a push to bring back the defensive tackle.

I've read rumors that our 3-4 this year will be more 1 gap than 2 gap with more penetration as opposed to lateral movements. Perhaps that's why we see him as a fit for our 3-4 and the Bears don't since they are using a 2 gap 3-4 , per the article anyway. Just a guess, will be interesting to see.

, I thought it might be something like that. That stuff is way outside my limited football knowledge, so I'm not freaking out about it. Just struck me as curious more than anything.
I really like to hear about the team doing anything different on defense under the new DC. Hoping the results will be a little better this year!!!

I also wondered about Paea's preferred Defensive technique and what we run but we need better lineman -- Period. This guy is super strong and could be coming into his own. He'll be 27 at start of season.
It'll be interesting to see if we bring back Coefield later, once we know his hip is okay on a reduced salary/cap hit.

Plus even though he is a little small for a NT, with his strength and being shorter he can create a lot of leverage so it may balance out.

Stephen Paea is on the move.
NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Monday that the former Bears defensive tackle has told people that he will land with the Redskins when free agency launches Tuesday. The big-bodied, interior lineman has been on Washington's radar for weeks.
Paea, 26, currently ranks No. 35 on our list of the top 101 free agents after a campaign that saw him notch six sacks while finishing fifth in the NFL at his position with 31 quarterback hurries. That pressure speaks to Paea's ability to cause havoc in the pocket, but he offered little help against the run last season.
Paea logged 40 starts over four years with the Bears, who selected the defensive lineman in the second round of the 2011 NFL Draft.
New Redskins general manager Scot McCloughan has made a flurry of moves along the line, releasing Barry Cofield and Stephen Bowen and adding former Niners and Colts defensive tackle Ricky Jean Francois. Paea is poised to join Jean Francois, Jason Hatcher, Chris Baker, Frank Kearse and Kedric Golston on what promises to be a wholly different defensive front in 2015.

I don't think Paea is coming to play nose tackle. I think he's too light for what they'll want to do at Nose, and I do not believe that 1-gap Nose is necessarily smaller than a 2-gap nose (right?). I am still holding out hope for Shelton at 5 or wherever we pick.

I agree. Paea is coming to help the pass rush, as a pocket disrupting 3-4 DE... I think a NT, such as Shelton, is still in play.

I would hope not (that he plays NT). He basically left CHI because he couldn't play that position. If he gets signed, I hope this works out. He doesn't appear to have the size/height dimentions to be a DE and swatter. They say he gets penetration, but he only had 6 sacks last year and 5.5 TOTAL in the 3 years prior to that. I've never seen him play, so it may be that his pressure came without amassing sacks..... at least I hope so.
He is coming off a "contract year" in that his production doubled or tripled vs. his prior years, so hopefully he can live up to the contract we give him and continue that production.... He is nowhere near a star FA, so I hope this FO doesn't offer him "star" $$$....... He should be in the range of "average starter" at his position $$$.

That's a good question about the contract year. C00ley asked the same question on his radio show the other day. But he said he looked at games from a couple different years and felt strongly that he was bringing it every year. He also said he liked thta Paea seemed to get stronger as games went on, that he was better in the second half of games.

the role of a player like this is not to get sacks, but to prevent the QB from being able to "step up" into the pocket. This should result in sacks for the OLBs. 6 sacks for a player like this is damned good.

Solid, if unspectacular player. Was injured a fair bit in his early days but played decently last year on what was a very poor line. No idea how he'll fit with a 3-4.

Great signing. Last year was his first where he was allowed to go after the QB and he produced 6 sacks and over 30 pressures. And his best years are ahead of him at just 26.
But the best thing about Paea..?
Well he was born in New Zealand and grew up in Tonga, serious rugby playing country. So, being a Kiwi, he can obviously do the Haka!
For those unfamiliar with it; The Haka is the legendary acient Maori war dance performed by the All Blacks (New Zealand rugby team) before kick-off to intimidate their opponents for over 100 years. And to me it is one of the greatest traditions in all sport.

Doubt it... it's an established Maori cultural practice that is done ritualistically prior to competitive events, greeting ceremonies,
even funerals.... South Pacific island people (and there are many playing football) would rightly take offense.
It's also AWESOME. Even Goodell would have to admit that...
