Anointed RG3 to be starter 2015 (short leash)

Speculations abound now.
Who will we target in Draft?
Is this a smoke screen for other teams?
Gruden says RG3 will enter season as starter
Coach Jay Gruden said Robert Griffin III will enter the season as the Redskins' starter.
"We will go into the season with Robert as the No. 1 guy," Gruden said Wednesday. The coach re-watched all of RGIII's tape following the season and seems to be comfortable with him atop the depth chart ahead of Kirk Cousins. The Redskins are armed with the No. 5 overall pick in April's draft, but need to attack the offensive line and all three levels of the defense. RGIII will have a short leash. But if he's healthy -- a big "if" -- RGII could be a value pick late in fantasy drafts.

Hope Cousins get traded to somewhere where he can compete.

Unless this is some sort of ploy for a trade for Griffin, this just reeks of meddling by Snyder/Allen.

Cousins is honing his skill with Jon Gruden. I think HE will beat out RGme this off-season.

He beat out Griffin last summer, but it didn't make much difference. You can see why Cousins might be frustrated.
I kind of laughed when I read that Cousins was working with Jon Gruden and Griffin was back with Terry Shea. Shea has turned into a bit of a joke at this point.

I wish that Jay had handled this a little differently but at the same time I think that both QBs have a lot to prove and IMO Cousins should be encouraged that Griffin has a whole lot more to do than he does
If Griffin shows that he's still making the same mistakes that everyone says he cannot correct, he's out-a-here

I just hope this is coming from a McCloughan, Jay , and cavanaugh collaberated decision. They sat down, looked at film college and pro, discussed what a 2nd year in the system and a qb coach will do for him vs cousins, and decided from there.
If thats it then im all for it. If thats not it, then be ready for another long year.

Frankly, it sounds to me like Jay is lighting a fire under Cousins...

If this was a Gruden decision he never would've announced it now. This his Snyder meddling written all over it. No way this sits well in the locker room either.

In what way, exactly? Shouldn't he be doing this for Griffin as well? Naming him the starter is just coddling him.

Not necessarily. I think its a Scot/Jay and maybe Cavanaugh decision
Why was Scot brought in here? To fix the team from a talent perspective both personnel and on the field. He could of (and still can) go anywhere else or go do his own thing. If Bruce and Snyder were in control of this, id bet you Scot would pack his bags and walk... his reputation is more important than a few failed years worth of pay from Snyder.
So, by whatever means, Scot, Jay, and Cavanaugh have decided that it is better to go into the off season, then otas, camp, and so on with 1 QB named the starter, and Griffin is who they think is the man.
While personally I like Cousins more.... I think it is better to name Griffin the starter early, let him mentally and physically prepare that way and get all the reps, rather than it be split between the 2 of them up through the preseason. 1 QB fully prepared in this case is better than 2 QBs half prepared.

But if you spend too much time preparing the potentially inferior guy, you're right back to a repeat of the 2014 season.
It's just a head scratcher for me. Unless of course this was Gruden's way of dodging the question...by implying that Griffin ended the season at #1 and this is simply a carry over into the minicamps and OTAs.

Thats possible too. I think Griffin and Cousins are close enough that prepping 1 of them fully would be better than half prepping both of them then picking one, regardless of who thinks which one is the better choice.

this is a mess - this is not 'working' like we all hoped it would be
I thought that things were going to be different and now this is beginning to smell like the wrong people are still making decisions

LOL.........here we go again. Yup, we all thought Scot M was "his own man". Did the Danny brainwash him too?
I hope not. I hope Scot does great things for the Skins. I hope Danny - little man syndrome - gets a clue and stops meddling.

Here we go again.
Geez Louise..
No.1 draft picks are always annointed as starters. Thats the way its always been. Especially at the QB position.
Joe Montana, John Elway, Dan Marino, Bernie Kosar, Jim Kelly, Troy Aikman, Joe Theisman, Brett Farve , Andrew Luck, Matt Ryan, Donovan Mcnabb, Michael Vick etc...
The day we traded away those picks and chose Robert no.2 overall in the draft he was annointed the starter. Thats the way its always been.
The successful franchises throw full support behind the no.1 rather then drafting a guy in the same draft just in case.
The successful teams put all the necessary players and coaches around the franchise player and then hope to succeed. Everyone has to buy in. Full support behind the no.1 that you chose. Thats the way its always been.
All the experts warned us of this on draft day. Here we are today.
I do think a trade is necessary. Kirk should be traded for as much as we can get. We need to fill our roster up with more talent and go forward with Griffin. Thats why we drafted him in the first place. None of this second guessing. Full support that means shoring up the Oline. Fixing the defense.
Griffin is our franchise player.

If he feels that Cousins is the best long term answer, this is an excellent way to test his response to adversity, especially in light of his multiple collapses during games last season. If he rises to the occasion, "WIN". If he doesn't, no harm, no foul.

Ummm... Your premise is really only true in the first couple of years... At some point, the concept of "sunk costs" must enter the equation. I think there are other (tactical/motivational) reasons for this announcement at this time. I'm sure there is significant frustration that these two, talented, quarterbacks have not moved beyond their "potential".

I'm not sure I agree with you on Griffin v. Cousins. (Honestly I don't have a strong opinion in favor of either one at this point which is why I liked the open competition.) But I agree 100% with what you're saying about not second guessing whatever decision is made and surrounding the QB with as much help as possible. On defense as well as offense.
The thing I don't want to see is another QB carousel season, shuffling guys in and out and never settling on one guy. That's obviously not a plan for winning. Its not a plan at all. And it definitely doesn't help any of the QBs improve.

Several of those guys were not #1 picks, and most didn't start their rookie year. Joe Theismann played in the CFL and returned punt for the Skins as the #3 guy long before he was even made the starter.

Is anyone else as disgusted as I am.....

with yesterday's news that Griffin has been anointed the starting QB without a competition?? I guess that Snyder nixed any notion that his boy wouldn't be the starter coming into this year. This damned team. Grrrrrr.

Go and listen to the interview yourself. Gruden was more stating that we are going into the offseason with Griffin as the #1 guy.
That is different than "Griffin is going to be the starting quarterback in 2015"
Anytime you hear a news story about the skins hear the exact source first.

Yes, I bungled that. But really, what's the difference between what I said with him being annointed the starter and Gruden saying he's the number 1 guy??? It seems to me that is pretty much been proven he can't do it.
