Who is Scot McCloughan? One of the @NFL’s best talent evaluators, but there is a lot more (h/t @SethWickersham) http://espn.go.com/espn/feature/story/_ ... iving-farm

Folks, pretty much everything that’s know about McCloughan is in @TarikCSN’s post. http://www.csnwashington.com/redskinsbl ... mccloughan … Very early in the process.

I was happy to read that this morning. But I don't want to hear that they're bringing him in for some "high level executive" role. The guy was a GM in San Francisco for four years. Give him the job and get out of the way, Bruce.

He had a hand in drafting the following:

Russell Wilson, Vernon Davis, Patrick Willis, Frank Gore, Richard Sherman and Joe Staley

This sounds good..... but only as a GM. I don't want him to be "president" of anything. That being said, I will always think Danny boy is meddling.

I know this is clear in what you wrote, but I have to ask because I think a lot of folks on this board agree with you: Do you mean to say that no matter what the Redskins do, no matter the degree of actual proof one way or the other, so long as he owns the team, you will always take the view that Dan Snyder is meddling in football affairs he "should" stay out of?

let's be clear here - Dan Snyder has owned this franchise since 1999 ... and while he continues to be a part of the process of building this franchise, we do not have a chance at getting better ...

the most important player on the franchise is the QB - Snyder decided we needed to get RG3, to be that player
this is exactly what happens to a franchise when guys that don't know what they are doing are in charge ... they screw it up every time

so it does not matter who we draft or who you bring in to work in the front office or who we bring in as the DC ...

it's simple - we need Dan Snyder to stop messing with this franchise

Scot could be another great addition ... means little while Snyder's actually making the decisions

Bruce Allen : Food & Beverage Manager

Has a nice ring to it, doesn't it?

This guy is a stud. Young and hungry. Learned from one of the best in Ron Wolf. Has everything to prove. Just got through his divorce and personal problems. Give the guy the job of GM He's got a laundry list of guys who he can add to his staff. When you have an opportunity to hire a guy like this, you do it. I thought he was out of football for good with his drinking but sounds like things are settled down. He would be THE top football mind in DC...although I guess that's not saying much. Would love to see him come in if he's given the reins because of he isn't, he'll be plucked outta here quicker than you can believe.

I say give him a high-and-mighty title and a big salary. Doesn't hurt the team one bit, only Dan Snyder's pockets and (potentially) his ego.

I don't know the first thing about this guy but I already like the idea of him being our GM better than Bruce Allen.

hah. I don't blame you on that. The guy does have some baggage though. He left both the 49ers and Seahawks jobs because he was battling a drinking problem. Its not a deal breaker, but definitely some risk involved. Pretty good article about it here:

http://espn.go.com/espn/feature/story/_ ... iving-farm
Here’s a good read on why McCloughan has been out of the NFL by ESPN’s Seth Wickersham that appeared in the magazine. The short version is that McCloughan once had a drinking problem that harmed his life and affected his job, but that he feels it’s now under control and he’s ready to work for a team again.

Some thoughts from Keim this morning on McCloughan too:
During his time with Seattle, the Seahawks drafted quarterback Russell Wilson, corner Richard Sherman, linebackers Bobby Wagner and Bruce Irvin. Now, what he had to say about each player I don’t know, nor do I know how much credit McCloughan deserves for these picks. There were a number of good picks in San Francisco that formed the core of the 49ers’ strong run, including running back Frank Gore, linebacker Patrick Willis and tight end Vernon Davis.

One current scout, who did not work under McCloughan, said he considers him a good evaluator as well as a good guy. And that he’d give him a chance. One former scout said he’d rather have McCloughan than A.J. Smith, whom he considers organized. I’ve heard more good things about McCloughan in terms of who people would want in their organization than I’ve heard about Smith, for what that’s worth. But the former scout considered Smith well-organized and loyal to “his guys.”

Another executive said he considers McCloughan a good evaluator. So, based on reports and what I’ve heard, this would represent a major get for the Redskins. I knew his background and what he had accomplished elsewhere, so what I’ve heard from others confirms what has been said about him in other articles.

You hear reports of drinking all the time by executives in the NFL, so it’s not as if this was a problem foreign to McCloughan. However, it was bad enough that it led him to being ousted in San Francisco and Seattle.

Like others, I’d heard that Bruce Allen and McCloughan are friends. Here’s a deeper connection: McCloughan’s dad, Kent, played for Oakland and was a scout with them at the same time Allen was employed by the Raiders. They would have worked together from 1995-2003.

:( I'm sorry to hear that. I'd be surprised if this wasn't more common in the NFL than people realize . . . it's the kind of job that attracts extremes: extreme work, extreme personalities, extreme pressure and tension. Kind of makes you wonder about the ethics of being such a rabid fan who demands it all.

. . . uh, anyway. If we do hire this guy (and it sounds like we have), Snyder with his deep pockets better give him the support and accountability he needs if he ends up taking the job. That's the kind of thing he could spend some of his time doing.

Its not a deal breaker, but definitely some risk involved.

Thanks for posting the links. Definitely some risk. But . . . I'm more than OK with this. Could be a step in the right direction.

CBS Sports are saying that he's the GM ...

all we need now is for someone to make sure that Dan Snyder stops his BS and lets the FO do it's job

simple as that ...

He HAS been hired, and it is (potentially) a huge step in the right direction. I am incredulous - the organisation is doing some things that I never imagined would be done with these two in charge. Nothing guarantees success, but this move is a very big step in the right direction. Hopefully ;-)

Me, too. The guy's not an axe murderer or anything and not the first guy to have this problem. I'm glad he's getting a chance to put it behind him and come help OUR TEAM!!!

BREAKING! Scott McCloughan will be Redskins new GM. Just spoke with him! Good for you Scottie! Press conference coming end of week.

I don't know much about him. It seems he has a good track record with SF and Seattle. I'm happy for the change and I think he can move the team in the right direction over the next few years. I read in an nfl mobile alert of the hiring that he has been scouting and can give animmediate impact for the 2015 draft!

DEVIL'S ADVOCATE:
It ain't that simple. Who do you think made the damn decision to hire him? Who writes the checks? I mean, you say DS ought to let the FO do its job, well we have to have a damn FO first, right? This isn't really directed at you, but this concept that Dan Snyder should own a thing that he never takes stock of, asks about, etc. is absurd. What owner of anything successful, good or in working order ever in the world just left it completely alone? Now that he's got a GM and President of ______ in Allen, NOW he should sit back and smoke cigars and watch the wins roll in, but he has to be involved.

Come on.

Dan Snyder needs to let the NFL guys just do their jobs and stay out of the draft and coach hirings like the other successful owners of NFL franchises do - he gets to approve things, for sure, but he needs to stop interfering with these guys & what they do

Dan needs to just do what other owners do - stay out of the football stuff and give credit to the staff for al the good things that happen
