What happened? For real fans who aren't blind or stupid

Here were my takeaways.

1) The D is way better. I wanted to fire Haslett with the Shanny twins. I might have been wrong, maybe his hands were actually tied.

2) Morris is incredible, we have to give him the ball more.

3) Polumbus sucks, he really, really sucks. Chester sucks too, but wow, not like Polumbus. We seriously need a RT, and an entire right side of the line would be nice. But new RT minimum.

4) Griffin wasn't that good or that bad. Wow, he has an arm. But to actually test him, we have to protect him better. It's ridiculous. He's in his third year. Running for his life is not testing him as an NFL QB.

5) I hate Paul, he's a mediocre wide receiver and he isn't a tight end at all. And Polumbus, I hate Polumbus. Sorry, my bad on that last one, slipped out, already covered.

6) We need to spend some high picks and $$$ on the O-line. Seriously, this is ridiculous.

7) Rambo can't tackle. He has some skills, but if he doesn't learn and soon, he needs to be flipping burgers. Tackling is a core requirement for a safety.

8) Our receivers are totally excellent.

9) Gruden called a great game except for one thing. One throw down field beyond 5 yards? Seriously? With our receivers? There has to be SOME threat of throwing it to get them off the line of scrimmage. If I'm a D coordinator, I have like 9 guys on the LOS when they play us. Yes, I know Griffin was running for his life and didn't have time and our O-line isn't good, but you just gotta do it for credibility that we might do it. That's one thing from the Shannahan playbook I wish he had not carried over, never, ever throw it down field. I don't get it.

My main takeaways.

Rambo is supposed to back up. I had a sneaking suspicion that without Brandon in there we would have some problems. We all knew the Online was going to be a problem but what gets me is why we didn't roll out of the pocket more. I think that gets corrected next week or our coaches are blind. So no Gruden didn't call a great game. Maybe he just didn't have that trick up his sleeve but he needs to do something seeing as how we can't fix the Oline this year. I say an upgrade from the right of Williams will help. All of them except Wiliams... Kind of hard to do even next year but they can find a piece or two. I would hate to be in charge of freeing up money for FA next year. Some good people will have to go. Got to pay for a QB and Running back and you can forget Rakpo unless he decides he can play for less. I just don't see where the money comes from.

Even when Griff wasn't being pressured, he still held on to the ball a bit too long. For example, the play where he got called for intentional grounding, the protection held up fine on that play, but instead of stepping up in the pocket, he rolled out to the right where JJ Watt was waiting for him. I know the O-Line is the one to blame today, but c'mon Griff. You know the right side is weak, you know Watt is playing on that side... Why would you roll out there instead of stepping up in the pocket? This should be something that Gruden needs to focus on. When you feel pressure coming from the ends, you're supposed to step up in the pocket. Griffin doesn't seem to step up in the pocket, but rather rolls out. I know he's right-handed and feels more comfortable running to that side, but he should also be aware that the blocking is not going to hold up when he goes to that side.

Alfred Morris is still a wrecking ball, and we should be a run-first offense (but we're not and won't be). Our special teams unit will once again be the worst in the league. My takeaways.

We must have watched two different games.

Can you elaborate a bit? Which part of my post do you disagree with, because I went back and watched the play that I gave as an example, and what I posted was correct (protection was fine, Griffin didn't see anyone open, then ran towards JJ Watt). I also looked up the stats between our runs and our pass plays. We threw the ball double the amount of the time we ran it (37 passes vs. 19 runs). Granted, most of that was probably towards the end of the game, so I welcome a correction for this.

Edit: http://www.nfl.com/videos/washington-re ... highlights

28 seconds is the intentional grounding play.

Intentional grounding play... I didn't see the replay but from what I remember he back peddled and your right no one was open for that fraction of a second and he did go to the right a little right before he got clobbered and tried to get rid of it. He didn't have time for a quick prayer or even a a OMG you guys suck yell.

Now that I watch the replay I still come to the same conclusion. Maybe it is just my eyesight.

It's all good. I welcome all corrections. I hope that this was just one of those games, and that we get it right next week. If we let ourselves lose to Jacksonville at home, then there is a serious problem.

Snyder's excuse too. I'd rather have one less stud receiver and one more stud to defend him. Particularly at RT.

The reason Joe Gibbs won with 3 different QBS and 3 different running backs wasn't because it was a different era and those QBs and running backs were great. It was because of those offensive lines. We know this and unfortunately big names sell tickets. We can cut losses with some of these guys if we truly want to build. It is going to take time because there is no money in the kitty. Rakpo will free up some but we need to cut ties with some others.

1.) The D is definitely better however i'll be interested to see us against a better O, i'm not sure where Houston will be at the end of the year but doubt it will be very high.
2.)YES, he needs 20+ carries per game.
3 and 4.) The right side of the line cannot pass protect, major concern moving forward.
5.) I actually like Paul, mostly for ST, and if he doesn't fumble that ball then he'd have had a great game. Big IF, I know.
6.)Yes, 1st and 2nd next year should be tackle and guard.
7.)He HAD to make that tackle and he hesitated and it cost us. Back to the bench for him I suspect next week, he didn't show anything.
8.) Can't tell about our WR's, there wasn't a single explosive play but i tend to agree that they are excellent.
9.)I blame the O-line for not taking shots, there wasn't any time. I think they should have ran some zone read however and they need to mix in what RGIII is good at otherwise everyone is going to lose confidence i'm afraid.

Overall, the team looks better and if the O progresses we'll be o.k but if they don't it's gonna be a long season. D and ST are improved.

Can't we extend Robert and Alfreds rookie cntract under the new rookie wage scale? That fourth year option?

My take aways-
We are the best in the biz at abandoning the run, WHEN ITS WORKING! Does coach NOT know that Al is one of the best rbs in the league? Second only to AP since being drafted- and led the league in yards after contact last year!!

Not enough roll outs.. big ben even gets those calls, and Kap was very successful today with it.. I guess we still need a decent RT to do so, and rolling out to JJ Watts side is kinda nerv wracking.
Ftr that man is a complete BEAST. Im hopeful that their pass rush with him and cushing made or line look worse then it is and that they smash the rest of the East up too.

Where Special teams improved- it also regressed. Why is Helu blocking and not Young on punts?? A blocked xp.. does that ever even happen to other teams?!?

Reed needs to be ok. We Reed him a lot.. that was his td that turned into a fumble.. i couldnt believe that ish!

Im a burgundy and gold shades wearing homer... but I saw some good things on D save one play- wasnt all on rambo it was a corner blitz and he went to help the wrong route, and blew a tackle ya. Did nacholibre suit up?? Hopefully he can step in and contribute. I really feel our O is working out some kinks... but when it starts firing on all cylinders its gonna be a BEAST!
*there HAS to be a tackle that was released who can replace polumbus Asap?! Wtf?! id rather gamble with Mosses and Long then see card board cut outs get blown up every week

According to the experts Polumbus is much improved lol. I'd say stick Moses in there but he may be worse at this time even though he would be learning. We need Brandon back asap!!! He will probably get thrown out the rest of the season
the next hit he makes. This is it killerz. Yeah rolling out would help even with Polumbus in there. Chester is awesome too. We had people going right up the middle also. The line sucks. No where to run for Robert so might as well roll him out different ways to confuse the defense some.

Agreed, we agree they are clearly better. I'm with you that I'm not saying they are exactly shut down and they may struggle against a better O, but last year, we could not get off the field against anyone.

oneman56 wrote:5.) I actually like Paul, mostly for ST, and if he doesn't fumble that ball then he'd have had a great game. Big IF, I know.

It was the difference between winning and losing. What is it he did you like?

Limited data for sure, but they did everything they could when they got the opportunity. Roberts should have done a better job on that one sideline route. I thought he was in, in the shot on the other side there appeared to be green between his toe and the sideline. Then again, I thought the Morris call was a fumble and they didn't overturn either. Both are defensible as inconclusive. But still, I thought they were both wrong.

oneman56 wrote:9.)I blame the O-line for not taking shots, there wasn't any time. I think they should have ran some zone read however and they need to mix in what RGIII is good at otherwise everyone is going to lose confidence i'm afraid.

I don't see how anyone blames Griffin for this. Not that they won't anyway. I see your point on the time to throw downfield, but I still think we needed to try a few shots to keep the D honest and we didn't.

oneman56 wrote:Overall, the team looks better and if the O progresses we'll be o.k but if they don't it's gonna be a long season. D and ST are improved.

Agreed, and a lot of other points we agreed on, which is why I dropped those from my reply.

*SHOTS DOWNFIELD: Roberts should have been a catch but that's what ever...
The pass to Garçon on the other hand def was catchable, and he NEEDS to help his qb by bringing that one down. The confidence he wouldve given Rob and the obvious impact of the play mightve been a game changer. Good teams makes those exact catches, hell Chomo through a worse hump ball short and double covered that got magically pulled in somehow...

I agree we needed WAY more... and coach eluded to Rob not having time for the play to develop and the wideouts getting downfield.
They werebpretty much playing the pass every down giving us the run- similar to how SF played dullass.. both teams abandoned the run despite both rbs having their way. Not sure why. Seems feeding Al would've been the exact answer to slow the pass rush. Maybe coach thouggt he ran it enough already to do so- if so he was wrong.

There were 3 issues offensively that I attribute to what I consider a horrible performance:
1. As someone who was at the game, the thing I noticed was the amount of WRs RG3 missed or didn't identify as being open. Desean and garçon (on downfield routes) were getting open and RG3 didn't hit them even when he had time.
2. The OL was overmatched
3. Play calling was atrocious. The fans actually started predicting the plays before the snaps. The offense was HIGHLY predictable. Now I see why the Cincy fans I know (one of which is very connected to the organization) weren't too concerned with gruden's departure.

Thats how Gruden does things but if #2 wasn't the case then a lot of balls are caught. If that happens then Robert has confidence to go down field. When you are constantly seeing the line cave, it must be hard to look down field. We know he can throw it. Hes done it before.

As a 3rd TE i like what he brings, selfless on teams, competes in the blocking game even though he's undersized as a TE and seems to work really hard and have a positive attitude doing whatever is asked of him. I hate that the fumble happened and he should've had better protection on the ball but there were lots of differences between winning and losing, i.e. Helu completely whiffing a ST block. Licht stepping on RG3's foot and Robert foolishly still trying to complete the hand-off and Rambo's ole' tackle.

Sounds like we saw the game almost the same way, we'll see how next week goes and I expect Jax D to give us big challenges. Gus Bradley seems like a good coach and now that he has some of his ex players from Seattle i think they'll be competitive on D this year. RGIII and the passing game will have to be better.

I don't think RG3 is doing anything to make this team better. For some reason, they have taken his running ability out of the offensive play calling altogether. I don't know if it's because he isn't able to run anymore, or if it's just because they don't want to risk him getting hurt...either way, this offense without the threat of RG's running ability is not good. In fact, if this is the type of play calling we're going to see from now on, we'd be better off with KC. RG has a strong arm, but he throws a lot of off balance passes that end up as incompletions or INTs, and he's not good at all at reading Ds...from what I saw yesterday, RG looks exactly the same as he did last year, which is not good at all...I just hope management doesn't wait until we're 0-8 before they decide to make the switch....I think RG is a bust!

I'll take issue with Gruden, he called a horrible game! The offensive game plan was terrible...14 carries for Morris? Thats it? And the business about throwing in the towel at the end of the first half left the announcers speechless. A winning coach never, ever, under no circumstance throws in the towel. Houstan walked into the locker room owning us right then.
I thought the officiating may have influenced the game, bad calls were made on both sides but the overly long periods to make decisions makes me think outsiders were givings opinions as well. That gives me pause. Refs make bad calls and they know when they do but it seems to even out during the game. I don't see that happening from somebody sitting in New York.
14 carries for Morris? You got to be kidding me.

Kaz - I think that Gruden has to give some thought to the fact that while he and Sean are trying to help Griffin become better at both reading defenses and staying in the pocket more ... with this O line, Sean and Jay need to come up with a better game plan that forces defenses to at least be worried that Griffin might use his legs

I think we made the Texans defense look a lot better than it really is by not getting more out of Morris and at least looking like we might run the read option a couple of times - that pass rush looked awesome against that horrible O line

Blah, blah, this thread is for fans of the team who want to be realistic, it says so in the title. You're neither, you are no fan and you're not realistic. Dumping on the team ignoring everything good is no different than hyping it up ignoring anything bad.

BTW, they invented something called television since your day. You don't have to listen to the game on the radio anymore, you can watch it and see how wrong you are.
