The Redskins put in a claim for former Denver Broncos strong safety Duke Ihenacho and were awarded him, two people with knowledge of the situation confirmed.
A third-year pro out of San Jose State, Ihenacho didn’t survive Denver’s roster cuts on Saturday.
He started 14 out of 15 games at strong safety last season, recording 73 tackles and three forced fumbles.
Ihenacho had nine tackles in the Super Bowl loss to Seattle.
Washington continues to look for safety help since they will be without starting strong safety Brandon Meriweather, who will serve a two-game suspension to start the season.
The team’s initial roster featured free safeties Ryan Clark and Bacarri Rambo, Trenton Robinson, who can play both positions, and rookie strong safety Akeem Davis.
But upon claiming the 6-foot-1, 207-pound Ihenacho, Washington plans on assigning Davis to their practice squad, a source said.
The Redskins on Sunday also signed second-year pro Nick Williams to their practice squad.
He spent the bulk of last season on the practice squad and had a solid training camp, but couldn’t overtake five veterans and rookie Ryan Grant for a roster spot.
Washington also has signed tight end Ted Bolser to its practice squad. The seventh-round pick was cut on Friday after failing to beat out the three veterans ahead of him.
