Jason Hatcher ‘excited’ to return to practice field
BY MIKE JONES
August 9 at 7:05 pm
Excerpts:
RICHMOND — Washington Redskins defensive end Jason Hatcher joined his teammates on the practice field on Saturday after spending the first two weeks of training camp on the physically-unable-to-perform list as he recovered from knee surgery.
-snip-
Because of the expectations set for him, Hatcher wrestled with whether or not to have surgery after experiencing problems with his knee during the offseason program.
He ultimately decided that rather than try to baby the knee off and on throughout the season, he would have the arthroscopic surgery so he could enter the season without lingering soreness or swelling.
“As a new guy who had just gotten signed, it was kind of a big deal,” he said discussing the dilemma he faced. “You, being a human, you think, ‘I just got here, and what will my teammates think? What will the GM, and owner think?’ It was a big thing and decision to make, but I’m glad I did it.

I'm glad he did it, too. Those two weeks in camp aren't going to hold him back as much as a nagging injury all year would have. Still a risky investment by the team, but so far so good I think.

Absolutely.
He just looks hungry to get back out there too...that's the kind of attitude we need; something contagious.
Dline is getting stronger...

Too bad he didn't have it a little earlier.

Apparently,it's your turn to be Debbie Downer. What's with that?

Not at all, I was just saying it would have been nice if he was at this point in his recovery a couple of weeks ago.

I would agree with you if we were looking for him to generate a pass rush on his own. But with Rak and Kerrigan and now Murphy and other pass rushers, I am pretty confident this is going to work out. We need to bring heat from every direction and any direction.

Why? He's a seasoned, quality DE. I doubt that 2 weeks makes any difference in the quality of his work...

Not the quality of his work, the quality of his healing.

Football is a team sport. There is benefit to practicing with one's new teammates.

Somehow, I continue to NOT be distressed that this player... And this d-line is somehow harmed by this 2 week delay. I don't dispute that there is "benefit". I simply doubt that it's significant, ESPECIALLY since we get a "full speed" Hatcher as a result.

But two more weeks of healing would only be beneficial.

I see the disconnect...
Neo says "

You say "
Too bad he didn't have it a little earlier."
That is what caused my "Debbie Downer" response...
Context sucks!

... especially when everyone is in their own reality!
I think it's safe to say, we agree with each other!

I had similar thoughts concerning Griff last year.

I was responding to I-B's "glad he had the surgery." But I see now that wasn't clear.

Yeah, but he couldn't have had his surgery earlier.

Yeah, but he couldn't have had his surgery earlier.
But they could have held him out until at least after the BYE week. I kind of remember Darth making that case last year.

And he was resoundingly rebuked for that stance.

I really don't think the health of his knee was an issue for him. It was more the mental aspects of coming back from an injury like that, mixed with the limitations of using the knee brace, and of course missing all of training camp.

Yes. Diff situation but similar feelings ... i.e., "more weeks of healing would only have been beneficial."
Deadskins wrote:And he was resoundingly rebuked for that stance.
Wrongly, I might add.

I still think the health of his knee was a major issue which simply exacerbated the other issues you raise.
But it is a new year and back to your point ... when it's "elective" surgery it seems like they almost always wait too long.

Looked like Hatcher had a good first night out v. the Ravens. Let's hope he stays healthy this season!
