DeSean Jackson -- Should we?

DeSean Jackson was released by Philly today. Should we take a run at him?

EDIT: On second thought......

Albert Breer, on NFL AM, intimated that DeSean Jackson may have some gang ties. If that's true, we don't need that kind of stuff around the program. Something to consider, of course.

That whole thing is just weird. Dude had 1300+ yards and 9 TDs last year, and they just release him?

He'll be snapped up quickly. I just can't imagine it would be by us.

If he were to stay within the East, I want him here. I'd much rather him leave the division altogether.

You think the Giants would pick him up?

Anything is possible...

Now that is amazing - if this guy has put his career at risk by making bad choices, then I certainly hope we don't try and pick him up

no player who does not consider the NFL to be worth making some sacrifices for is worth taking a chance on

So then, sj I take it you don't think Jim it say is worth taking a chance on, too, right?

No thanks, he's too dumb...we already got rid of a really dumb player, Freddie Davis!

YES. Who would we draft at no.34 that's better than that guy?

This franchise is no longer using the Fantasy NFL method of just adding the best player available ... there's no doubt that Jackson is a very good NFL player but for the Eagles to just let a really good player go is a huge concern for most GMs and I doubt that our guys will want to add any 'baggage' to the huge task they already have here

btw - I look for Jim Irsay to be dealt with very harshly by the NFL at the appropriate time

I'm thinking that the allegations were simply a covenient excuse to let him go for other reasons. He looks/acts like a whiny little diva b****. There are quotes from former teammates that he isn't a cancer but a distraction. Those IMO are the reasons he was released, the allegations just made it easier to justify freeing up the cap space.

Innocent until proven guilty no? This kid just had his character assassinated for stuff nobody has proff of or observed. He has plenty of ugly traits that we can prove.

this is a very weird deal - fortunately for Jackson he has some support - this from Derrick Ward

http://msn.foxsports.com/buzzer/story/d ... ore-032814

that seems to sum it all up nicely - confirming why Ward is no longer in the NFL - I'm sure Jackson will appreciate this a lot

I think they are worried about getting into an Aaron Hernandez situation. That probably has teams scared. The Eagles said they were wanting to trade him, but with the new allegations surfacing, said they cut off all trade negotiations. Didn't want to dump that on another team. He is probably going to be signed, but it could be a low value deal with escalators if he stays out of trouble and plays well, but an easy out for the team if he screws up.

I gotta say, the job that Billy did up in New England after losing Hernandez and Gronk was darn impressive.

I'm not sure why just adding the BPA is the Fantasy NFL method and I'm not sure why you'd say we are no longer doing that. I'm thinking we have so many holes that we have to lean heavily toward the BPA philosophy. We don't have the luxury of choosing satisfying a short term need over thinking long term and stockpiling as much talent as possible.

The Cowboys were even defending NFC Champs who thought they had that luxury and by choosing "need" over BPA (thank goodness), they passed on Joe Montana in favor of Doug Cosbie:

He was selected by the Dallas Cowboys in the third round of the 1979 NFL Draft. That year, the Cowboys were placed in the third round just ahead of the San Francisco 49ers. The Cowboys' draft strategy through that time was to take the highest-ranked player on their draft board, regardless of position. When the Cowboys' turn came up in the third round, the highest rated player on their board was Joe Montana. However, feeling that the quarterback position was in excellent shape with Roger Staubach and Danny White, and needing a tight end, the Cowboys went off their strategy and drafted Cosbie. The 49ers selected Montana.

The general consensus in the NFL is to lean toward BPA - especially in the front half of the draft. I suspect (and hope) that is how we will lean.

Aaron Hernandez' case was an extreme and extremely unfortunate situation.. I think at this point it is unfair to put DeSean in that light. I know he and Vick have owned us for many years and that problem may be over and in fact should we acquire DeSean's services it will represent not only a serious upgrade at WR but one could argue our offseason will deserve an A+ with Hatcher and Orakpo back

lol. I was kind of scratching my head over that one. Really what I was wondering is: if we're no longer trying to add the best player available, then what strategy ARE we using exactly? I'm hoping its not "overpay for the third best player available".

Nice example about the Cowboys and Joe Montana btw. I don't think I've heard that story before.

It's worth a serious look. An incentive-based contract that richly rewards him for keeping his nose clean and producing could be huge for us. If he becomes a distraction or locker room cancer then it's back to the scrap heap. Even better, he produces and we get something in a trade.

This would shock me if it happened, but...

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/foo ... n-jackson/
The Washington Redskins rank among a handful of teams that have expressed interest in former Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver DeSean Jackson, two people with knowledge of the situation confirmed.

I don't have any problem with the team expressing interest and taking a look at Jackson. I also think the fact that Andy Reid is interested in bringing him to KC probably says something about the situation too.

there is really not reason Djax should sign any incentive deal - he has not done anything wrong. However, he does not pass the smell test so let him go (hopefully to the AFC).

Let's not act as if collusion is above these people. If everyone offers him about the same amount of money, what's he gonna do about it? Sit out? It'll just fuel the fire that he's a diva (which he is).

In the grand scheme of things, he's done nothing that bad. Again, I believe the gang stuff was Kelly's "out " to release the guy. What evidence does any of us have? I take anything coming from NFL FO's with a grain of salt.

So, he's been cleared of gang affiliation. Atleast by the Lapd etc... Gruden is great with player management from what I hear. He is the deep threat receiver we need. How many deep balls will Aldrick drop this upcoming season? If the saints were able to sign Byrd, believe me Bruce Allen can make this work. Imagine this: Rg3, Morris, garçon, djax, and Reed. The oldest Djax being 27...this could be really really good and I think it's worth the risk. Rg3 has already been campaigning for him and He'll want his revenge... Btw he's visiting us first on Monday....BRUCE MAKE THIS HAPPEN.

Completely agree with your suspicion. I live near Philly and the local sports media knows everything about the Eagles players. The first time any of us heard about "gang ties" was that story that emerged when he got cut. Interesting how that works...

Although I'm trained and very apt at hating players from other NFC East teams (especially him) I wouldn't mind if we signed him. Until then, I hate him. Hate him with a passion.

I honestly don't know what to make of all of this. On the one hand, obviously a talented receiver like DJax could help any offense. On the other, we need to build a strong locker room and good program and the wrong type of personality could easily damage that cause. I have to admit that I would be excited about the prospect of signing him even with the reservations, though.

One thing that makes me feel a little better about his fitting in was a small mention in one of John Keim's pieces in which he made the point that DJax changed games without making a ton of catches. Case in point: he lit the bonfire that became a blowout against us a couple of season ago with one long TD catch -- that was the one were Laron got burned like an Elvis Patterson impersonator. After that TD, DJax had ONE catch in the game. Yet, it was a successful game for him. My point, I feel less concerned about him fitting in with Garcon, Reid, and everyone else when he can have what is considered a great game without needing a ton of touches. I'd have been more concerned if he were to come in demanding a dozen targets a game like a Dez would.
