2014 Tight Ends

I thought I'd pick a position to review and see what folks think of our current guys, who we might target in free agency and the draft...

Jordan Reed -- Cap hit $495K in 2014
Logan Paulsen -- Cap hit $1.34 Mil in 2014
Niles Paul -- Cap hit $690K in 2014
Fred Davis -- Not signed in 2014, 6 game suspension.

1) Reed -- a real bargain and our star. Hopefully, he's cured from the concussions and is 100% when the 2014 season starts.
2) Paulsen -- had just an average 2013 after a pretty good 2012.
3) Paul -- hardly played TE, and when he has he's been 50/50 -- drops 1/2 the passes that hit his hands. He's more of a ST player.
4) Davis -- aka Sleepy, not under contract in 2014, so UFA. The guy is very talented but not a hard worker and seems to never learn.

Of course, Reed is our starter. Paulsen and Paul are 3rd teamers and STeamers only. Paul may never be an offensive player so I could see us cutting him. I believe we need another player, or two, here. I sure hate to let another 2nd rounder go, but Davis won't be available for the first 6 games. I doubt he gets anything in free agency so maybe he's worth a small contract in 2014...?

Not sure we have enough cap space to overspend in FA but there are a few TEs out there. Maybe we can find an older guy who could fill in for one or two years. If Jay likes him, Alex Smith from Cincinnati. Brandon Pettigrew maybe. Dennis Pitta and Jimmy Graham would cost a lot. We could get Kellen Winslow for a couple jars of vaseline! sorry...

I wouldn't expect us to draft a TE any earlier than the 4th round -- We could consider Richard Rodgers from California in the 4th. Or, Xavier Grimble from USC in 4th or 5th round.

Other thoughts out there?

I don't think TE is going to be a priority this year... there is adequate talent at that position on the team... and too many critical holes.

I think of Gruden and Gresham. I see Gruden using Reed and Paulsen. I completely agree with Paul being a ST player. Sleepy is gone. Paul is versatile but may be gonner. At least he is a hard worker (I think) and knows "the system."

Brandon Myers is an interesting FA who had to spend too much time blocking for the Giants. He caught 79 passes 2 years ago. He's 28.

Yep, it's done, Fred is gone..the guy has gone off the deep end.

If only I had his size and talent when I was 25 years old. What a shame.

I like the TE from Buffalo that's a FA. We should get him.

Can't agree, Chris... too many other needs.

Is he expected to be expensive? I'm a sucker for a good TE (& WRs).

I do feel that we'll be fine with Jordan Reed & Paulsen. Reed is an absolute stud, but I'm concerned about his durability.

I'd be more comfortable with signing a FA TE this year as opposed to drafting one. Unless another absolute stud is available, but like you said CT, there's too many other needs.

Scott Chandler, TE, Bills. Age: 29.
Scott Chandler is just an average tight end. His size (6-7, 263) makes him a solid end-zone target.

He is Lumberjack-esque.
