I read that he'll be promoted to a co-HC position of sorts and Raheem will be promoted to DC. We'll see.

What in the hell does an assistant head coach do if he is not also the Coordinator on one side or the other? That's not a trick question, I really don't know. Is his job to help Jay Gruden with management of the team since its his first gig?

I'd put my money on it Haz sticking around is just a mentor type deal, be there to help out Jay with his first HC gig.

That makes the most sense to me too, but I guess we'll see.
There are quite a few teams in the NFL with guys in the "assistant head coach" position. The Patriots even have one, believe it or not.

Good start by the new HC.......... keep all the horrible coaches. Next thing we'll hear our ST coach has been promoted in some way.........

Sounds like London Fletcher would like to see the team move on from Haz:
“I think Morris as DC would be great choice! Brings energy & excitement! Would feel pretty good about HC, DC, & OC then!”
That's gotta say a little something, yeah?

Haslett is being kept, as least what I'm gathering from different articles, because he has a rapport with Gruden, and is still under contract. I wouldn't be surprised if he stayed for another year as a assistant HC, but I've also read that he'll most likely remain the DC.

When discussing titles, if I remember right Greg Blache was or defensive coordinator back in the day and Gregg Williams was AHC-Defense. The higher titles ultimately runs things. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong.
Having typed that, that makes me sad. Back then our defensive staff included guys like Blache, Williams, Jerry Gray, and Dewayne Walker. Now it is Jim Haslett. All four of those guys would be better than Haslett.

Pretty sure the ST coach, Kieth Burns, was fired the same day as Mike Shanahan.

Jay was sounding like Frank Caliendo doing an impersonation of his brother Chucky on his interview. Anyway, he said he hated coaching against the 3-4 and said he was planning on sticking with it. But he also said he was planning on interviewing a lot of coached so that may, or may not, mean the Haz is still going to be the D coordinator.

Jay works for the FO and he's going to have to have a good case for not wanting Haslett (or Haslett & Raheem) here running the defense
Jay can make a case for it but it's not like it's his decision
this is the new way of doing things here and it's all about accountability ... and ... don't forget, keeping those guys is much less expensive
I think that Jay Gruden is going to do a great job but he also knows there are some 'fights' that are just not worth having
I am looking forward to Haslett showing that he's a good DC and I'm sure he will be very motivated to show that if he gets the opportunity

I wouldn't mind keeping a former NFL HC on staff in some capacity, because I think it will help Jay's transition. That said, I'd like to see what another coach can do with the defense.

Same here. Sorry guys, I'm just not liking the idea of Haz staying on as the DC. I'm also keeping an open mind about it because some folks I trust here, and elsewhere, like the idea of Haz staying; perhaps I'm just not seeing something in its right light.

Jim Haslett is abhorrent. Haslett has one of the most atrocious coaching records that anyone can peruse and determine that he has NO BUSINESS on NFL teams. Well, NFL teams that prefer to be successful over being failures, that is. The ownership and managing of this team and franchise is a complete trainwreck. That is the one constant factor, however. I see 2014 as yet another 6-10 season at best. Ineptitude abounds in DC.

Look... I am not Hasslett fan but...
In January 2000, Haslett was named head coach of the New Orleans Saints. That season, he guided the Saints to a 10–6 regular-season record, their second NFC West division championship, and the first playoff victory in franchise history (defeating the St. Louis Rams; they lost to the Minnesota Vikings the next week). As a result of the Saints' turnaround from their previous 3–13 season (under his predecessor, Mike Ditka), Haslett was named NFL Coach of the Year.
He must know at least a little something.

Yes, it is his decision. It is his staff!!! He will get to hire who he wants and even said so in his press conferences. In fact, the presser lead me to believe that Haz is simply a candidate for the DC job and Gruden would interview other people as well.
Maybe it is just wishful thinking, but the presser certainly didn't make it sound like he was a lock to stay.

Boy I have no idea why you have faith in this guy. He has NEVER shown that he is a good DC, why should he all of a sudden start.

Not announcing the coordinators yesterday was pleasantly surprising to me. I was actually really glad they didn't. It seemed like they announced a deal, then within minutes there were these reports about who the OC and DC were going to be already. I mean, WTF???
I really liked that Gruden looked to be taking control of the situation, talking about interviewing coaches and assembling the staff. This should be HIS coaching staff, not guys foisted on him by the Redskins front office.

I agree. I think Jay had to say RGIII was his man in the interview but I doubt he cannot choose his staff.

I disagree. Haz has shown he can be a good DC - at least IMO.

Agreed 100%. I think the retention of certain members of the staff was to give the new HC something already in hand should he wish to keep them, not to force him to take them on. If you buy that they thought the search could take up to a month to complete, this makes even more sense. If you have to believe that they were always going to hire Gruden and Gruden only, it still makes sense, all of these guys are people with whom he is already familiar. Apparently, it was not about saving $$ or any other nonsense, but just . . .
smart?!

when the coordinators are announced we will see the Washington Redskins put forward as the team most likely to win the NFC East in 2014
we'll have the best HC, the best QB, the best staff ...,

Jay Gruden was THE HC target all along - keeping Haslett, Morris and McVay was a good decision by the FO ...
I'm not a big fan of anyone - I could care less who does what here - with an owner like Dan Snyder, it does not matter who is coaching or playing for the Redskins
we need Dan Snyder to stop crippling this franchise and give these guys a chance to put a competitive product on the field

Ultimately a coach is judged by his record. That being said, let's look at the situation in it's entirety.
This FO held onto a few coaches. Because they knew they wanted Jay and because they KNOW the true story. If you follow the reports and the facts AND the reason for Danny Smith's departure, it's evident that Mike failed across the board. Mike, wanted the 3-4, not Haz. Mike had his hands in the personnel acquisitions, with final authority... Not Haz. Mike was a dictator, for better or worse. Danny Smith left because Mike took too much control and gave him sh** to work with, you all saw the result.
So. How can we accurately judge a DC that had a scheme chosen for him and could not hand pick his own players...? If your boss gave you 2 broken pencils and requested a Picasso, would you succeed? LOL. And if I came to your gallery and complete sh** all over your best effort, would that be entirely fair?
So, I'm not a Haz fan, I'm not a hater either. I am a fan of understanding the entire situation. So if this coach wants to consider retaining him, knowing the true situation. I agree with his choice. If he doesn't keep him, I agree with his choice.
