WashingtonPost: Arrington Takes Issue With NFLPA Licensing

LaVar Arrington's eight-year, $68 million extension has taken its latest legal twist with the linebacker's attorney, Don Petersen, contending that his client never agreed to the NFL Players Association's group licensing agreement, which grants permission to sell merchandise with Arrington's likeness or image, including his number 56 Redskins jersey.
Rest of story...

So what's next? LaVar won't be able to make tackles this season because it is not directly stated in his contract, or the contract is no good becuase he didn't sign in the color ink that he wanted to sign in? I have to tell soldiers everyday to "Suck it up and drive on" and some barely make enough to fully support their family and/or live in substandard housing. I love LaVar and only want to see him as a Redskin, but this is starting to sound like too much whining. He either needs to git rid of that so called agent that represents him, or take the blind fold off before signing. Count your blessings LaVar--and play some damn football.
as much as i love the guy...

i agree, Arrington is starting to make some bad moves. As much as I love the guy, It's his fault his dumass agent signed the contract. Stop talking and get ready to play some football. I think he really loves being a Redskin, but I also think he is buying into his own hype.

Well... I know he's not going to try and take that jersey away from me.
Even though he said it is kind of cool to see people wearing his jersey, should I wear it at training camp or just avoid a beatdown altogether?

What a richard. "I think its cool to see people wearing my jersey" But then he doesn't want them to wear it. His antics now put him on my s list. I'm a firm believer in not being an idiot. He needs to fire his agent. I don't care if he calls him daddy and they play catch in the back yard. This dumbass needs to learn how to read over a contract and know what he's signing. The best thing LaVar can do is drop his agent and these issues. He signed the contract. Live with it. Not my favorite player on the team anymore.

lavar is a cocky sob who has all the talent in the world... but seem to dumb to know that his jersey would be one of the hottest jerseys today.thats not saying i don't like him as a redskin but i almost bought his jersey until i found out about the portis trade, now that is the one i'll get.REDSKINZ4EVER!!!

Lavar is really making himself look bad, he and his agent both deserve every bit of this. I hope he doesn't see one red cent of any of that money in question. If you SIGNED a contract that means that U agreed. Besides that now theres another twist with the merchandise, Im sorry but that sounds like stupidity if I ever heard it. Someone didn't read the contract.
TRADE LAVAR!!!!
If Gibbs is all about personality, Lavar is the next person on the chopping block.

now that takes guts to say and i like it!!!!!!!!!!! even just for something to talk about. lavar also said that if the team does not turn things around he would retire.guess what lavar some nfl greats never play on a winning team so get over your self. also stop with next LT crap people... LA will never even wear LT jock strap.so what would we get for #56?REDSKINZ4EVER!!!

I think Lavar has to take his complaints to his agent. Poston is not doing his job. Plus 6% of every item with his name or picture on it for doing nothing more than signing your name...I'll bet with that alone he'll make more than most of use this year.

Snyder needs to tell him that he'll be getting a few million from Players Inc., so that will balance out the 6.5 mil he's not getting in his contract. It will all work out. There's one thing I don't understand. Lavar continues to tell us how much he loves the fans, but he doesn't want us to have his jersey or be able to use him on our Madden games. Is that contradictory or what? He should run with John Kerry.

It's on ESPN as well (below). I think the man's losing it. I love the way he plays the game but all these offseason antics are getting out of hand. At what point does his offseason business BS create major problems on the team? We don't need this kind of crap.
I hope he gets his act together and even goes one step further and realises his agents are a disease.

Fans clamored for No. 56 LaVar Arrington jerseys, and they became available this spring for the first time, but they could quickly become limited-edition collector's items.
While the Washington Redskins linebacker has enjoyed seeing people wearing his name and number, he and his lawyer contend he did not grant permission for the apparel, The Washington Post reports in Tuesday's editions.
Don Petersen, Arrington's attorney, sent a letter about the issue to Reebok, according to The Post.
"Anybody who has done anything," Petersen told the newspaper, "will get a letter just to make sure they are on notice."
A players' association source said that union executive director Gene Upshaw is trying to negotiate a settlement, according to the paper. Arrington crossed out the contract language that gives merchandising rights to the union when he was drafted, but did not do so when he signed an extension in December.
"I didn't agree [in December]," Arrington told The Post, "but it's still kind of cool to see a lot of people wearing my jersey. I hope all this works out so I can just play ball." Arrington is also involved in a dispute with the Redskins over a $6.5 million bonus he believes is missing from his contract.

What is funny is that the reason he did not sign the agreement when he was drafted was becuase he wanted to be sure he is on a team for a long time and so when he signed the extension in December he signed the NFLPA agreement as well thinking he will be a skin for life. Now that he is saying he did not agree to that deal he is in essence saying he does not want to play for the skins for a long time to come. IMO.

Lavar needs to pull his head out! He was my favorite active player, but not now. I won't be buying his jersey. I wish 28's class would have rubbed off on some of these guys.

Changed my avatar. Wouldn't want to upset Lavar. I'm pretty sure he didn't sign a contact that said I could use it, or if he did, he was tricked into it!

I have thought Lavar was arrogant from meeting him at training camp. This just confirms it. My take on this whole jersey thing is this, because the selling of them is in jeopardy he's expecting everyone to run out and purchase his jersey ASAP thinking it will be pulled before regular season. This will be a huge chunk of change in his pocket. Smart marketing dumb for him to treat his fans this way.
And another point I'd like to make, I haven't been able to go anywhere without seeing his jersey in every freaking sporting goods window, why on earth is he just now bringing this up?? He's had to have seen all the advertisement, he's had to have seen a million of his jerseys floating around out there, like I have.
HEY wait a minute wasn't that super bowl commercial that he was in for merchindising? I think he's just trying to get media attention here, really.

Joe Gibbs has always said that "character comes first". I ask, with all of Lavar's antics lately, what kind of character is this showing to all of us...and to the team?

I still like LaVar. I just wish he would handle this situation better.

I think you guys are being a little hard on the guy....
I mean it says he only gets a 6 percent cut on the WHOLESALE price... not the Retail price... so that means when they buy those jersey's for $20-30 and then sell them to you the consumer for $79.99.... he's only making about $1.80 on that jersey.
And he said that he likes to see us wearing his jersey, but maybe he doesn't want his face and name thrown all over trading cards, video games, and posters... and anything else the NFLPA helps market, I don't think you can specify where they put your name when you check that little box.... I mean you got to give the guy a little respect for respecting himself and his name....
Plus, Lavar has gone through a carousel of coachs, players, positions.... and every year ends with his team not progressing..... and HE STILL WANTS TO STAY HERE?!?!?!? I could name 100 players right now that would jump ship already...
The guys full of character... and class..... and so what if i can't grab his jersey..... or play him in a video game.... I thought that when he's on that field, that was the reason we loved him being on this team?

Let not forget that the dude is only 25 years old. I think this is the Spoiled kid coming out not the super linebacker that we see on the field. At 25 I didn't know stuff from shinola...
so I don't expect a guy who did not finish college to know either. I think LaVar needs to go back to Penn St. and take a public speaking and contract law class before he continues to alienate fans with his immature remarks and childish rants.
Maybe he needs a nice piece of stinky cheese. A ghastly, pungent, stinky piece of cheese to go with that WHINE!

i really don't care how much lavar makes from his jersey's. he just one guy in the NFL. is there anyone other popular player in the NFL that has been such a jerk when i comes to merchandising? and NikiH had good point to ask why it's taken him so long to realize that he didn't agree to all this? shut up lavar!

maybe that $1.80 in his pocket, but he benefits in other ways. the nflpa has a killer retirement package, post-football career counseling, injury pay, etc. some of that cashola from the shirt & video game sales goes towards those as well. sure, there are people who are making bundles of money from his name. but it's not like he's getting screwed.
if you want to take it a step further, one could argue that the sale of shirts, video games, etc. increases the number of viewers who watch football. that means higher ratings, which means more money from sponsers to advertise during games, which means networks are willing to bid more money to broadcast the nfl. that inturn means a higher salary cap, which means, you guessed it, higher salaries for the players (including lavar). it's a long line of 'which means', but i think it's a straight line.
