Redskins Dismiss Talk Of Raiders Trade
Bergen County Record
04/12/2004
The Washington Redskins are denying reports they have inquired about trading first-round picks with the Oakland Raiders to select Iowa left tackle Robert Gallery.
The deal had the Redskins sending the No. 5 pick to the Raiders in a package for the No. 2 because Washington is upset with veteran tackle Chris Samuels, who refuses to renegotiate his contract, ESPN reported.
"April Fools' Day is nine days late," Redskins' VP of football operations Vinny Cerrato said. "It's normal to contact teams before the draft. Everybody in the league does it at this time. Teams are giving out false smoke signals all the time."
Gallery and Miami tight end Kellen Winslow II were among the prospects who recently visited the Redskins' headquarters. Miami safety Sean Taylor is expected in this week.
Cerrato confirmed, however, that he is waiting to hear from free agent linebacker Warrick Holdman, who visited the team after he was cut by the Chicago Bears.
