Wait Until After The Bye??

I am not advocating we wait until after the bye to start Griff but over the off season it occasionally surfaced as a possible timetable. Anyway, I was thinking about the possibility and, if it actually happened, what the outcomes could be. Here are a few I came up with.

Imagine Cousins going 3-1 with a win vs. the Eags, a tough loss at Green Bay, a win vs. the Lions, and a win at Oakland. Further imagine a 4 game stat line of 1,000 yards, 68.8% completion rate (his stat last year, #2 in NFL), 8 TDs, 2 picks, and a 101.6 QB rating (his stat last year, #5 in NFL behind Griff).

Now imagine the Dallas game during bye week. It's Griff's 1st start and we are going to Dallas. Instead of them laying in wait to avenge Turkey Day, we are breathing fire in anticipation of Griff's debut. Then Griff lights 'em up in "Griff's House" just like last year.

1 Mike would certainly have bolstered his position as Top Dog.

2 Mike would have showcased Cousins giving the league 4 more chances to see him and essentially cementing his status as a guy well worth trading for.

3 Mike's status as a genius goes through the roof. He has gotten the whole city and the team extra rabid for this game and the Griffskins have slain them. Cousins is even more valuable and pretty darn happy. We are pumped and off to the races.

4 Oh, here's a good one - Mike would have given Griff 5 extra weeks to "heal."

I'm not exactly opposed to it. Just don't know if I can handle another 4 weeks of "Griffin Status" in the news.

However, it would give Griffin more time to heal, a "timeout" to rethink his running strategy, and increase Cousins' trade value in 2015 (unless...I hate to even say it, Griffin is out again).

I don't want to hold him back TOO much, but then again, I think we will have a great season, but personally, I think this isn't "our year". Would loved to be proved wrong...will eat crow for months with a smile on my face :) I just see us making some wise free agent decisions next year and another smart draft that will put us at the top in 2014.

In one sense, that's 4 less games for Robert to have a setback; in another sense, that's 4 less games for Robert to get back into the swing of things.

Not an easy decision.

I like your thinking but there are to many RGIII fans that would go nuts if they had to wait another 4 wks for him to play. :D

Good point, because they'd have to account for ticket sales too. Not 100% sure though if there would be any "drop off" in sales. So many other players to see.

He doesn't need more time to heal. And, if we went 3-1 with Cousins showing great stuff, that would only serve to bring up the inevitable QB controversy that DC loves so much.

Even though that seems like a real logical way to go, the pressure to play RGIII will be too high. 16 games is a long haul, and a fresh RGIII is Dallas would be great. He has to get hit sooner or later, the sooner the better for him. Either way, Cousins market value is up.

Apparently, Philadelphia agrees with you: Morons say the darndest things

According to [Philadelphia radio host Howard] Eskin, [Dr. James] Andrews recommends that RG3 not play in Week 1 against the Eagles and instead wait until after the Redskins' bye in Week 5 to take the field

It's really simple. If he is 100% you play him. Why wouldn't you? If he is not, you hold him out.

I would have no issue with that plan BUT I think it would be extremely difficult to pull off..

even if it is true that Dr. Andrews is suggesting to wait until after the bye week to play RG3 it will be incredibly difficult to make this happen if there is no " setback " which NO ONE wants to see happen.

Griffin is already pressing the issue and creating stories of a "rift" between player and coach over the plan they have laid out for him to return. He has also said multiple times that he fully intends to play week 1.

that is why IMHO if he continues to progress from his injury with no sign of a setback it will be near impossible to keep him off the field whether the team feels he is 100% or not. Griffin will constantly be in the news trumpeting his desire to play and stating he is ready and I feel that a true rift might form between him and the organization if this is stretched out into the season.

There is no way that RG3 is playing if he's not completely ready to go and cleared to play by the medical and coaching staff - NO WAY

There is no way that RG3 is not playing in the opening game on Monday night if he's completely ready to go and has been cleared to play by the medical and coaching staff - NO WAY

please explain why RG3 would not be the starting QB in that 1st game given that he's ready to play and completely healed ...

why does anyone think that he needs more time "to heal"? please give us the link to that possibility AND this link should be from a reliable source

Just spoke to Dr. Andrews about report he recommended #RGIII not play until after the bye, his response: "Not True" #httr #Redskins @wusa9

I asked Dr. James Andrews to elaborate on Philly report:"Not true, i cannot make a rec yet, sorry" @wusa9 #Redskins #HTTR

I totally disagree with this nonsense that RGIII's knee is "completely healed". 1) He's wearing a knee brace for a reason. 2) If you have knee surgery in January, there is no question that your knee will be more healed in October than it is in September.

Even so, if the Docs say he is healed enough to safely play, then I expect him to start against the Eagles.

Also, there is another possible outcome to starting Cousins for the first four games. He goes 1-3 or 0-4, messes up his trade value and we start in a hole for the 2013 season.

Gotta play the best QB.

No question.

Yep.

Agreed - regardless of who that is come Monday night.

Note riggofan contradicted nothing from my original post:

I appreciate the thoughtful reply.

It will be interesting to see how the next month unfolds. I hope we are smart about what we do. It's an important time in the history of the franchise.

the knee will never be 'completely healed' ....

the coaches and medical staff will not let RG3 play unless his knee IS as good as can be expected after surgery earlier this year ...

there is no way that Mike and the staff will hold out RG3 if he's cleared to play ... NO WAY Hosea

RG3 is not wearing a brace because there is anything 'wrong' with the knee
the brace is staying on for this season because RG3 WANTS to keep it on and does NOT want to answer questions about when the knee might be ready to play without the brace ...
he has already nipped that 'issue' in the bud .. so to speak

fans here who think that RG3's knee is an issue or a problem for him just don't have a clue and have not been paying attention ....
RG3 would not be allowed to risk further damage if there was any need for more time to get that knee in better shape

I said theres a valid chance hes not gonna play game 1 or 2 bc the redskins staff will be extremely cautious with him...I got laughed at by these fans bc they are looking at his abilities early August, smh they aren't gonna let the QB or media influence their decisions as you can tell the past few weeks and it doesn't seem like such a lock he will play day 1.

I hope he starts playing when he feels safe playing and can handle the knee brace enough so no more damage. But, on the other side if Cousins does play all the games before the first bye, there will be way to much controversy. Let him play when the coaching staff, medicine staff, and he feel extremely comfortable with his abilities to play. Hope for no setbacks!!!

By the way!! The hour ESPN film of him 8/27 looks pretty cool.

there is NO WAY that RG3 will be allowed to play if the knee is not ready ...

using your "logic" it would be better for RG3 to take a season off and really recover from the surgery that he had earlier this year ...
MAYBE RG3 really should not have used the stem cell stuff that Dr Andrews used to aid in the quicker recovery time ...
then he could have rested the knee for a season and come back next year in much better shape than he is now

PLEASE get a clue about all this - if the medical staff and the coaching staff think that his knee is good to go - he should play

END OF DISCUSSION - hypothesizing with old fashioned ideas about recovery time for this surgery shows a lack of knowledge about what RG3 and AP went through

Bingo! We have a winner!

(Actually, it appears that both Griffin and Cousins are winners. Wait until his knee is stronger.)

1) He's going to wear it all season, so there's nothing to that reasoning. He's wearing it as a precaution.
2) Once it's fully healed, it can't get any more healed. So if it's fully healed in September, then it won't be any more healed in October. It will still be fully healed.
Now, whether or not you believe he can be fully healed at this point is another story. Obviously, you have your doubts, and that's OK. But medical science has taken leaps forward in this area, and it is possible.
