Richmond Mayor Dwight C. Jones announced today the city’s plan to develop the Leigh Street (Science Museum) site as the new home of Washington Redskins Summer Training Camp beginning in 2013.

While I am somewhat saddened to see it move so much further away from me rather than a 30 minute drive, I am glad that they are finally having a "Camp" this year. I mean that in terms of having to stay together, in a team hotel, to build the camaraderie and gel as a team.

I'll be traveling to VA (Richmond) from San Diego. Not specifically for the camp but upon hearing the news about the site change plans, and now having read the above article, I am excited my relatives brought up planning to see the Redskins live!!!! I recall seeing photos of all the people lined up to get autographs at camps from years past. Some photos probably are here in this site at the photo galleries. I'll take many pictures and even score an autograph, I hope. Do you play for the team or just plan on staying at or near the team hotel?? :D

As for the closest hotel, just go into Google Maps, key in the address to the camp, and hit "Find nearby places". From there you can select hotels, etc. Usually they will post the 1st result as the closest, but scroll through and double check its not filtered based on popularity.

This, of course, is IF Google hasn't made any significant changes to googlemaps.com. Either way, you get the idea...

There aren't any hotels within close walking distance of the camp. I don't know where the players will stay. There are some crappy motels maybe a mile away, but I wouldn't stay at those if you paid me.

I would just find the best value you can somewhere around town and plan to pay for parking (the city is going to run a shuttle).

It looks like the team is staying in the Omni in Shockoe Slip, which means that, while there are a few options within walking distance, they'll all be on the expensive side.
