Is Cooley completely finished?

Just wondering if he'd be worth giving one last chance at being a utility back/hybrid blocker type dude, seeing as how he has familiarity w/ our offensive system & gameplan.
I have always loved

ey, & he'll pretty much play for 100 bucks a game.
Hurts seeing his skills dwindle down to next to nothing.
What are ur honest thoughts on him, even in the NFL in general?

I would love to see

ey back over Niles Paul.. I get that they are at different points in their careers with

ey clearly on the back end and likely not able to contribute on special teams ( which clearly shows why he will most likely NOT be back ) BUT...
I just dont get what they see in Paul.. I dont see the value in him and from a fans view point would love to see

ey back for one more year

I don't think any of us truly know. Some will have supiscions or gut feelings... I say it's one or two things going on with Chris

ey. He's either A. Fallen off, or B. His body is failing him and he's simply not the best player anywhere on the depth chart.
Mike Plays the best player at the position and

ey isn't that player anymore. He's our 3rd best option at the TE position.

Yes, I think it's a sad reflection on

ey's diminished abilities/physical condition that the Redskins seem to think that Niles Paul represents an improvement over him. I have my doubts that Paul himself will be around for very long though.

It happens to every player at some time in their career. We wasted his best years...

I find it hard to believe that

ey has nothing left IF healthy.. I imagine he is pretty healthy all things considered.. but of course I am not him and or a team doctor to determine that.. I think I just wear

ey tinted shades as he was and will always be one of my favorite Redskins so I would love to see him end his career on top playing like one of the best TE in football but I also understand that is not the case sadly

ey fan here - the reality is that, as some have pointed out, the players that give the coaches the best group on the field will get the call ..
it's time to look at all he's done DESPITE not being surrounded with players that gave the offense the best chance for success
THANKS Chris

ey - it was fun

I think

ey waits around this year again in case we get a season-ending injury to a TE. But other than that, I'd expect he's done. I'd be surprised if he's even in training camp.

I think we should keep him as utility at this point.. he can still prolly show us a little magic here & there. I think the biggest knock on him now is he's just TOO slow at this point.
We all know speed was never

ey's forte.. but his hands & football IQ are well above average, + he can block, & he's hard to bring down... not to mention what he brings to the locker room.
I'd like to see him in the backfield causing confusion from time to time, & getting open for some first downs. Then we can all hear the COOOOOOOLEEY again.
That's my dude, I just wish we could give him ANY kind of opportunity.

My only concern is using that roster spot if we have more pressing needs. Honestly I can't see him NOT available during the season if we need him.

To those who think CC has something left in the tank... keeping in mind that I am a huge fan...
Did none of you watch him run last year? The man was horribly hobbled... he has a serious hitch in his giddyup... it was apparent even when walking. I was broken-hearted watching him. He has nothing left to give.
This is one of those times that I'd be delighted to be wrong... but I just don't see it.

NFL Network !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Why would HE not put himself in a position to start a SECOND sports career.
Thanks, Chris. Be smart, move on. You are good and smart on TV.

Father Time is undefeated. Sucks that it comes for

ey right around the time we get good. But, short answer to this question is--YES. He's finished.
Here are some guys that were on our roster when

ey came on board. Just to give frame of reference for how long it's been.
Lemar Marshall
Robert Royal
Joe Salevea
Mark Brunnell
Rod Gardner
Lavar Arrington
Rufus Brown
Ola Kimrin
Walter Rasby
Chad Morton
I mean, he had a good run. But, it's over.

I don't disagree with you guys necessarily, but

ey is only 30 years old. Its not like he is over the hill. What exactly makes everyone so sure that he is finished?
I would have to think he is fairly healthy after not playing much last year. I'd be willing to bet he's at least as good as Niles Paul.
On the flip side, doesn't seem like any other teams were after him last year, so yeah anything is possible.

He's only 30, but he's been in the NFL going on 10 years. And, his last few seasons were plagued with injuries and a dropoff in production. That's what makes him over the hill. You simply can't expect him to regain health and ability once he's hit 30. Older players generally slowly deterioate.
Can he still play? Sure, he could. But, when you have guys like Fred Davis & Logan Paulsen you have to ask yourself--what does he add? How often would you need him to play? Keep in mind, he doesn't play special teams (except for on Punt & FG protect). But, he doesn't even get to dress if he's behind Davis, Paulsen & Paul.
BTW - Niles Paul is not only a TE, but he returns kickoffs and plays on coverage teams.

ey has past the point in his career where he no longer justifies a spot with his production like he did 4-5 years ago.

I agree with what you're saying Hogster. I guess my point is that I can't say for sure that he's physically "finished". It seems more definitive to me that Shanahan made a decision to go with the younger guys than use up the cap space on the 10 year old player. Probably for the reasons you mentioned.
And that is a fair point about Paul and special teams. I would still find it hard to believe that

ey isn't still a better TE than Paul from what I saw last year.

If Paul can learn to catch, he could be dangerous.

ey consistently broke tackles after catching the ball when he was at peak. He was never fast so he ended up shedding weight to maintain speed, however that also made him lose his power, which was his strength.
I think he's done. He could fill a small role similar to last year but why pay a guy veteran minimum ($800k?) when you can just draft an undrafted free agent to fill a role if Fred doesn't fully come back?

We should view this as a good thing. It's a good thing when you have enough depth that you can't justify keeping someone like

ey. Washington loves him, he can probably do whatever he wants in the area. It's not like he's riding off into the sunset.

I hope Niles isn't the KR this year. I know his yards per return was fairly good, but he looked like he was going on slow motion! His longest return would have been s house call from any returner with respectable speed.
There is a reason you don't see too many TEs returning kicks. I know he is a WR converted to TE, but he was a slow WR converted to TE.

I'd rather have a really slow kick returner that has a fairly good average amount of yards returning kicks than a super fast kick returner with just an average amount of yards per return

He ran 4.4
But, he does leave some shiftiness to be desired.
