Facebook Map Pins Down Redskins Territory

Breaking down Redskins vs. Ravens fans has been a hot topic this week. While Dan’s method of talking to seemingly the entire Maryland population was pretty darn scientific, some folks at Facebook found a way to use page likes to pin down which areas of the country belong to which team. The map above reflects those findings.

Here is some data from the Facebook page dedicated to this research.

At Facebook we have about 35 million account holders in the United States who have Liked a page for one of the 32 teams in the league, representing one of the most comprehensive samples of sports fanship ever collected. Put another way, more than 1 in 10 Americans have declared their support for an NFL team on Facebook.

Based on this map, here’s what we learn about the Redskins’ reach:

* Maryland is predictably split along county lines between Ravens and Redskins.

* Less predictable is the lower half of Virginia going to Dallas, and not the Redskins, Carolina, or even Atlanta.

* There is one tiny little area on the eastern coast of Carolina that is showing as Redskins territory. Based on a map of the state, that area is the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge. Those animals love them some RGIII.

OK, I have issues;

1. I'm colourblind so this means FA to me!

2. What about some figures...? Big cloured squares are one thing, but how many of these 35m fb users actually 'like' each particular team...??

3. Where are the NY Jets fans....?!?!?!??!

Glad there is a pocket of Redskins fans around Dallas to balance out the obnoxious idiots who grew up in DC and are Cowboy fans.

This map is faulty on at least one area, the Tidewater area (Hampton Roads, VaBch, Norfolk, Chesapeake). I lived three for 14 years and that area is definitely Skins territory. In fact there are more Steelers fans there than Cowturd fans.

Not sure why it didn't reflect that way on the map.

The same is true for southwest Virginia. I don't know of any Cowpie fans there. I'm thinking it has something to do with the last 20 years of Skins ineptitude, and the generation gap in Facebook members. These people's parents are all Skins fans, and they are probably rebellious teens. That being said, it's not like the Cowpies haven't sucked too.

I see a tiny pocket of Jets fans in Queens and Nassau County, NY. The Jets used to play their games at Shea Stadium, in Queens, and they have always had their practice field and office just over the border in Nassau.

There are not many Jet fans...I worked with a guy who had Jet season tickets, but he was considered eccentric.

North Carolina was/still is in some spots- Redskins country. The Panthers did not turn us all but some flew the coop. Not sure where they got there data, but the outer banks is still Redskins country in North Carolina. The Charlotte market has no choice they are force fed Panthers, thank god for NFL Sunday ticket and sports bars.

The data comes from Facebook "likes" for team related pages. This suggests that there will be a prevalence of the young, under 35 crowd. I suspect that this creates a built in skew.

I can here for my hometown team. Pick your beef elsewhere. Steelers Nation has no qualm with you.
