This picture sums it all up!

Better yet, were you at the game.
I remember watching the game when Monk broke the record.

It was awesome...why is he not in the Hall of Fame?????

Boss Hog,

I think you should put up an Art Monk Hall of Fame petition on the site.

Where vistors and members can give their name, town, etc. in support of Monk in the Hall of Fame... Then, when the list reaches massive proportions we can send it to publications before HOF voting...Sports Illustrated, ESPN, Sporting News, etc.

Maybe it could be like a guestbook format?
If any website is going to help Monk get in then it's got to be TheHogs.net.

Larry Michael on WJFK has a weekly segment dedicated to Art Monk until HOF voting next winter.

Are you down?

Art's not in the HOF 'cuz he was quiet and didn't speak to reporters. And we know the selectors point to his relatively low # of TDs...Maybe if James Arthur Monk had a flashier name: Jimmy Monk...ugh. J Mo...JAM Monk...never mind...I heard that Larry Michaels will be mentioning Monk at last 3 - 4 times per broadcast this year to increase awareness of the travesty of the classy Art Monk not being in the HOF.

i have this moment on tape, and watch it from time to time. the real reason art monk is not in the HOF is that he's not a self-promoter, and he never was. by all means he deserves it, but we're dealing with sportwriters here, who, as the late howard cosell would most likely agree, have the IQ equivalent of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. it's all a popularity contest. it must be, because i cannot fathom how you leave a guy who once held the record for receptions out.

i am all in favor of some sort of organized campaign to put art monk where he belongs (with tcwest leading the way, of course). if art won't stoop to having to promote himself, then we should do it for him. i don't know if it does any good to do this now, or simply get organized and wait until it gets closer to voting time.

Better now than never...it should have been started years ago then there would be thousands of votes!

I think this would be a great way to show how connected Redskins fans are to the teams players and history.

Let's do it!

That, sir, is libel. I will not have you soil the good name of peanut butter.

Great picture for a great memory! I'm all for whatever it takes to get him in the Hall. Another proponent is Mike Wilbon of the Post. He's always taking about how ridiculous it is that he's not in there yet.

maybe a smart beginning move would be to ask (via email) mr. wilbon what he thinks we, as fans, can do to help art monk get in. he may be able to make suggestions as to the most effective way of winning some of these non-believers over (aside from breaking in to their homes and threatening them at gunpoint).

From the Chat House on the Post:

Camp Lejeune, NC: Who do you think will be inducted into the HOF this year? Why has it taken so long for Art Monk to be inducted into the HOF? I thought he would be a shoo-in. Does Russ Grimm have a chance of being inducted the next few years?

Michael Wilbon: I don't know about Russ Grimm. I'm in favor of Grimm being inducted into the Hall of Fame. In fact, as a selector for the Pro Football Hall of Fame, I have not only voted for Grimm, but agitated for Grimm. And I'm one of the 2 people in the room who have nominated Art Monk and spoken on his behalf. But it appears to me that it is going to be very difficult for Monk to make it. The people who argue against Monk believe he wasn't a great impact player in terms of touchdowns scored and yards-per-catch. Now, I think this is insane. But I don't unilaterally install people in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. I'm one of 37 or 38 people voting in that room. It seems pretty silly to me that one of the 2 consistently great offense teams in the 1980's (the 49ers are obviously the other) would wind up having one offensive player (John Riggins) in the Hall of Fame. The quarterbacks changed, the running backs changed, the tight ends changed, even a few of the line men changed over the course of Joe Gibbs' 12 seasons. The only constant was Art Monk....well, Monk, Grimm, Bostic and Jacoby. To me Monk was prolific enough to be voted in easily. But as of know, there aren't enough people in that room that believe as I do. --Mike

Mr. Wilbon raises a great point. One of the most prolific offenses ever has so few members in the HOF. What's up with that?

I read an interview with Gary Clark where he said that he expects to be inducted into the HOF. As cool as that would be, I don't think he has a chance.
