RG3 ... Robert Griffin ... The Third

I like calling him "RG3." Short and sweet. The announcers all season have insisted on saying over and over and over the full "Robert Griffin ... The Third." I mean come on. Now yesterday they extended it to repeatedly saying "RG3 ... Robert Griffin ... the Third." What's next, they start saying "RG3 ... Robert Griffin ... the Third ... from Baylor" every time they say his name? Maybe then they add his home town? If they did it once in a while that's fine, but they do it every time they say his name.

Griffin would be best.
When did all the first name stuff start. I remember games against the Cowboys where we were Theismann, Riggins, Monk, and Green but they were Troy, Emmit, Michael, and Deion!
Just call him Griffin.
Hey says his friends call him Griff.

If it were just "Robert Griffin" I wouldn't find it so bad. It's 4 full words though and they say it over and over, "Robert Griffin The Third." Then this week when they said "RG3, Robert Griffin the Third" the first time I rolled my eyes but let it pass, but then he started repeating that.

I forget which game it was, but the ComcastSportsNet guys were talking about how they weren't supposed to call him RGIII anymore and were having trouble breaking themselves of the habit.
They seemed to indicate that they had been asked not to call him that and I assumed it was by RGIII, but maybe it has something to do with him trademarking "RGIII" and "RG3"?
I dunno, but here's half the story at least

So most of them went with Robert, no Griffin or the third just Robert

Interesting, I don't see how a trademark would prevent them from saying RG3, but it's interesting what you heard. I don't see why anyone wouldn't like RG3.

If it's true (and I don't know how much of it is)
If RG3 trademarked "RG3" then my guess would be that the NFL has asked broadcasters not to use the moniker saying "we don't care what you call him, just as long as it's not RG3 or any other trademarked variation"
This would seem to make the most sense to me given what little facts I have and based almost entirely on speculation

No, no, no...
You have only 2 "1's" after your name, and they are contaminated by a 0 and a 9. Just don't even talk to me... It's just embarrasing.

I heard that and at first thought they called him Archie Griffin. I was thinking both won the Heisman but come on.

you cant just call him Robert Griffin because that would be refering to his grandfather .. he is the 3rd... so his full name is Robert Griffin the Third...
just like Ken Griffey Jr had to be called Junior because if you didnt add the Junior to it you would be refering to his father

I can see where that would be confusing. "Robert Griffin throws to Garcon..." People would be asking what the heck, did RG3 throw that pass, or did his grandfather?
Actually with Griffey, they only called him "Junior." Wasn't that even MORE confusing? How the heck many "Juniors" are out there? Who caught that fly ball? Which Junior?

How is anyone supposed to know which Bob you meant? When you said "Bob" I had no idea you meant Bob 0119. Shouldn't you use his full name?

Weren't they both (the Griffeys) playing in the league at the same time at one point?

Does that it's his father really matter? How's that different then if any two other players have the same name? If the announcer says "Ken Griffey" and you're like, wait, another Ken Griffey is on an another team, which one are they talking about? In this case, OK, they could say Junior, but what if they aren't related. Big issue there...
