Fire Danny Smith.....IF

If there is another blocked punt or blocked Field Goal attempt this year by opposing teams, then we
MUST FIRE this Special Teams coach (there is nothing special about it thus far).
He's been with the Skins since 2004 - is he that good that he keeps sticking around...??? I think not.
WHY is he still with this team...??? This is an area of concern FOR SURE.
Am I off base here?
yeah, yeah.....coaches coach, players execute the play - WHATEVER
I tried looking for stats but only found this:

Shanny must really like him... He was a holdover from the staff, was resigned a year later to a longer deal and just recently was extended.

I don't agree.
- the players execute. removing a coach will allow leave the new coach with the same players who do not pay attention to detail.
- the players are taking responsibility for their actions. I believe the Mike needs to come down on the players, as well as Smith. Fines need to start coming into play.
- Gibbs, Zorn and Shanny kept this guy around for a reason. I'm going to blame the players first. They execute, not the coach. According to all reports, he gives them DETAILED analysis every week.
My final point. You guys wanted Kyle fired. You said he sucked and can't call a game. You all said he was only here cus of his father. You all disregarded his success in Houston. But like I said, players execute, not coaches. Now he has a QB that can think and throw at the same time and he's being heralded.
Solution: get Danny smarter players.

I'm with you man. Blaming/firing coordinators for the most part just seems like a scapegoating thing to take some heat off a head coach when the team isn't doing well.
Our terrible play on special teams baffles me though. I just don't understand how this can continue. Danny Smith needs to motivate these guys to execute or find new guys who can.

Danny Smith is widely regarded as one of the TOP special teams coaches in the NFL. That's actually why he's been able to stay with the team even though they've had multiple coaching changes.
Lorenzo Alexander said point blank that they are making mistakes. DSmith tells them what's going to happen and when it does, they've made mistakes and it's cost us.

Frank,
I'm sorry, ten blocks in 18 games is a reflection on coaching! Sure the players are the ones that actually screwed up, but some ST coaches go decades w/o their units allowing ten blocks.
DS had to be held accountable for his unit under performing in a such a simple, basic area.
I'm not saying fire him in season, but if we have eight blocks like last year (and we are 1/4 of the way there) then who else is responsible?

Coming up on the 3rd game of the year, 1-1, people want heads to roll. Man, lets just see how we are doing at the bye week huh?
If the bobblehead breaks one to the house I'm sure everyone will want to keep Danny Smith...

Good to know who's to blame if he doesn't

Fire Danny Smith if 1) there is another Special Teams disaster and 2) there is another qualified candidate to replace him.
I nominate Brian Mitchell

Funny Tribe, I was literally thinking the EXACT same thing yesterday. ONE more blocked kick or punt... and dude has to go.

Funny, lots of people keep repeating the old mantra that Danny Smith is one of the most highly regarded special teams coaches in the league. But I'm not sure the stats over his time in Washington back that up.
With the increased depth that has supposedly been added to this team, the special teams should surely be much improved, not stinking the place out?

Good find on this stat.
Yeah this is a "special" team unit that specializes in goof-ups....!!! I hope I'm proven WRONG at season's end.

I'm sure BMitch does NOT want it. He had a couple of cushy jobs that probably pays him a comparable amount when you combine them and he doesn't have to work half the hours.
He likes to golf too much to become a coach.

Danny Smith is just like anyone else on this franchise and he will be replaced if the guys in charge feel that the ST's issues are due to Danny's coaching
Danny Smith's reputation as being one of the best ST coaches in the NFL will not matter one iota if the issues are due to his leadership and coaching
I doubt that's the case

I doubt B Mitch wants to coach. I'm only half serious. My point is that Danny Smith should be fired if his units don't produce. That's the nature of the business. But, if you get rid of a guy, you'd better have someone in mind to step in.
I fail to understand why guys like Danny Smith keep jobs as coordinators when I'm sure there are some James Thrash or Zo Alexander type former players who would love the chance to coach a unit that they actually played on at some point.

Why would you doubt it? 10 blocks in 18 games would not simply be an indication that we've got the most forgetful set of special teams players in the galaxy - it would suggest that the coach is failing to get a very basic message across.

^^ totally agree and ...
Danny Smith will NOT keep his job if he's the reason that the ST units are having issues
but ... I don't think that's the case

You can blame the players if (i) it's an isolated incident, or (ii) if it's the same guy consistently. But, in this case, it's a different guy on a regular basis.
To me that says that the coach is not effectively getting his message across to all of the players and getting them focused and motivated to execute.

^^ well if that's the case we may see Mike Shanahan, Danny Smith and Jim Haslett all lose their jobs because the units they control are obviously not playing well because of the coaching
I just don't see that happening
but then
I don't have much of a clue about all this stuff
we'll see if these guys are still on the sidelines this coming week

Oh, they'll all be there next week, but make no mistake: everybody's job is on the line. Sure, special teams didn't foul up this week - they need to establish a pattern of excellence and efficiency before Smith is off the hook.
