Despite solid preseason, Briscoe knows roster spot is no guarantee

Wide receiver Dezmon Briscoe, who caught two touchdown passes during the preseason, in concerned his lack of work on special teams could cost him. (John McDonnell - The Washington Post) Despite touchdowns in back-to-back games during Weeks 2 and 3 of the preseason, and a nine-yard catch on his only target of the Redskins’ 30-3 win over Tampa Bay, wide receiver Dezmon Briscoe was worried Wednesday night about his chances of making the 53-man roster.
The 6-foot-2, 210-pound Briscoe demonstrated his play-making ability, and he is one of the biggest targets on Washington’s roster. But Briscoe saw a hole in his preseason resume.
“I felt like I had a good camp and think I had good preseason as well, offensively,” said Briscoe, who signed with Washington during training camp after getting cut by Tampa Bay. “Thing about it is, I didn’t take a snap on special teams, and that’s probably going to take it’s toll when it comes down to the final cut at the wideout position. Because, you know, the Aldrick Robinsons, the Brandon Bankses, the Anthony Armstrongs all contributed on special teams. So they’ll be looking at that as well.”
A third-year pro who had six touchdown catches for the Bucs last season, but fell out of favor with the team over the offseason, Briscoe said he is willing to contribute on special teams. But he didn’t have his number called all preseason. Instead, Armstrong and fellow receiver Terrence Austin served as gunners on kick and punt units, and Robinson and Banks both returned kicks.
Briscoe believes he can serve as an effective gunner.
“If you go look at the film, I’m a physical blocker, and that’s a lot of what special teams is, going down the field, being physical, making a tackle.” he said. “I shouldn’t have a problem with that.”
Although he didn’t get to prove his special teams capabilities, Briscoe hopes coaches appreciate the size advantage Briscoe holds over the 5-foot-11 Armstrong and Austin, the 5-10 Robinson and 5-7 Banks.
“It’s most definitely an advantage, especially down the middle or across the middle, throwing around linebackers,” Briscoe said. “It gives quarterbacks a little more comfort in there.”

Garcon, Moss, Hank, Morgan, A. Robinson, Dez, Banks
That would be my receivers. I don't know why we'd keep other receivers who would not be active on game day. Can't Dez learn to play special teams? How hard can it be when they make just about every rookie play ST?

He said he's been a gunner, so I imagine he could at least do that.
I like your list...
But with AAAs speed and hands on the deep ball and Austin (a guy I've liked and hoped made the team all along) progressing and being able to do it all... The coaches got their work cut out. It's a shame we didn't trade someone since obviously they won't all make it.
Good sign of us getting better tho no doubt

I like that list, but have been pretty disappointed with Hankerson. I would put him at #4.

Me too - but he is sure to make the team so he takes up a spot.

Banks would have more of an impact on the team than any fifth or sixth WR.
Gladly release Hightower to keep Brisco. I would release both Brisco and Hightower if it meant we could keep Banks.
This is not tallented enough to cast asside one of the few true playmakers wer have. If you look at plays 20 yards or more during the preseason I bet banks leads that list. Not even counting KR in that group Banks has had almost as many +20 plays over the past two years as Fred Davis.
He must lead the NFL in TDs being called back for penalties that didn't impact the play. Just because they took the points off the board it doesn't mean Banks didn't make those plays.

Just getting at the sentiment around here that none of acquisitions warranted the release of our "best" WR last year. Bill just cut him from the NE squad.
Heck, when we signed Briscoe. There was a common sentiment that he was a bum that Tampa cast to the way-side. Ignoring the fact that there was a long lIne of potential suitors for him (Dallas being one) and that he caught more TD's than any Wash WR in god knows how long.

So instead you would cut our only veteran QB who knows the system inside and out -- when we have 2 rookie QBs????
Rex will be one of the most important players on the team in mentoring RGIII and Cousins.
We also need all the DBs we can get.

Rex sux.. you want him to teach our future to not see line backers? To take to many hits? Mentor? Nah, I'd rather clean the slate and coach em up.
We have a lot of young talent in the backfield... Doughtey doesn't fit in either of those categories

Well, my WR list is:
Garcon, Morgan, Moss, Hankerson, Robinson, Briscoe
If we keep 7, then either BB or AAA.
Concerning Gaffney, I always thought he was an average receiver and was not upset when we let him go. I think the 6 or 7 we keep will all be better than Gaffney.
Concerning Grossman....while I think he will indeed be on the team as the second string QB.....I would not shed a tear if we went with two rookie QB's this season. If we were close to a SB run, I would think different....but as I expect that we will be around .500 this year, I don't know that the advantage of having Grossman mentoring RGIII and Capt. Kirk outweighs the roster spot he takes up from someone like BB, AAA, or another player who will potentially be with the team long after Sexy is cut.
