baileys first couple of years were awesome,but with the coaching changes he grew tried of and his play went down hill.he wasn't a great run stopper...he didn't want to be here any more, so he was traded. we got portis and with gibbs playbook i think portis will be our best "D".springs is no shut down corner but he will hit and help against the run.he has been to the probowl 3 times.so the way i look at it we get 2 probowlers for the price of one.REDSKINZ4EVER!!!

bailey is better, no question. but with a good d-line any corner will do.(see carolina panthers) john fox said "in my opinion the best pass defense is a good pass rush". gotta agree with that statment. unfortunantly for us, we still have a crap d-line.

as much as i realize that we need help on the dline, i reeeeeeeeally want seans taylor. even more, i do not want to see him in a giants or patsies uni. i've been trying to convince myself that the skins can work some draft pick magic to get taylor and udeze or wilfork, but i know i'm just living in a dream world.

Champ is by far a better cover corner than Springs in my opinion. Champ is also more durable. I think Dan and the crew played their cards well though. If they had to get rid of an A+ caliber player, they made it so they got one in reurn. As Clinton said in his intro. speech he is a little bit better because he can create things (he is the ball handler). Champ was great--but not Gibbs' core Redskin.

Champ is a better cover corner? I'm not so sure. Champ is more durable. Yes, I'll agree. Any corner will do? Don't think so. Fox is a defensive genius but I disagree that a good pass rush will solve it all. You get a good QB with a three step drop with a couple of good receivers or TE and that offense will eat you alive. You have to have corners that can stay with his man and protect that yardage. IMO Williams is also a "D" genius And I like the picks we have gotten so far. There are question marks on a couple of them with injuries, But I don't think Gibbs and his staff would gone after them if they didn't think that they could heal and contribute. The D Line specifically.... Crap!!!??? Not!!!!! I think these guys are going to surprise alot of people when the season starts. With a little help from the LB's, I say look out. Udeze would be nice in the draft though. I do have to admit that. But I'd also like to see Winslow Jr.

I liked Champ alot until last year. He got burned for quite a few touchdowns. He also got beat on crucial 3rd down conversions. But what really pissed me off was during the eagles game. On a screen pass he just escorted that eagle into the end zone. He could have at least dove at him.

I'm glad he's gone. I agree that Springs isn't as good as Champ, but at least he won't escort the opposing player into the end zone.

Springs is the best thing we could have gotten losing Champ. Injuries are a risk for anyone, too.

Last year I swear I saw a QB drop back, ties his shoelaces, grab a beer from a vender and wait for change, get a cheerleader's phone number, go back for a pretzel, get the play from the coach again, and then throw the ball. Udeze is the needed pick here. A good pash rush may not be the best pass defense, but it sure does help.

One thing that scares me is the league has now said they want to crack down on the amount of contact that CB are doing. This could hurt Smoot as he relies on being physical to make up for a little lack of speed. I haven't watched Springs week in and week out but what I have seen of him...he is no Champ. Champ will do fine, he has been able to rely on his speed to cover WR's

Completely know where you're coming from DEHOG. And to throw something else into the mix, Greg Williams was quoted as saying, "People have the perspective that corners in this league don't hit. These corners are going to hit." Also to concur in Smoots case, he may have a harder time this year because of it.

Springs will get the job done. If he is healthy he can really perform well. Plus we have pretty good depth at cornerback positions with harris and brown. I do agree that or d-line is the best pass defense we can get. We should draft wilfork, udeze, or harris and then sign another d-lineman after june 1 cuts.

I must say that our DL is not crap and agree with DW and say that we are in far better shape this year than last and will suprise a few people. I still say if we can trade down we need to p/u a DE like Smith or Udezie but if we stay put at #5...its Mr. Sean Taylor BABY!

Way to go skins75 and thank you!! I can't seem to figure out why everybody is so down on the Dline. These guys we picked up are, while being pricey, are top notch. Doubters just wait and see!!!

because... with just the front four how many sacks did they get.much less pressures. question how many sacks as a defense did we account for?that is why we need a STUD DE or DT.REDSKINZ4EVER!!!

Of course let's not forget coaching...how nice will it be to see a "attacking D" vs. what we saw last year!!

i am a naysayer, and i say the line is barley improved from last year. we have NO weight in the middle. we have NO pass rush. griffin helps, but doesn't solve everything.
and the point i was trying to get at about the corners was: our corners are better than what carolina had on the field in the playoffs. but we aren't going anywhere UNTIL we stop the run, and get a little presure up front.

I don't think we need a stud DE. I think our line will be just fine. If we can get our DT's to draw some double teams then our DE's will shine. A mediocre DE will thrive on one on one play and will cause havoc, plus with our LB's blitzing we will have field days.

I think we should ALWAYS have LaVar Arrington or Marcus Washington blitzing. Just have one of them blitz each time. It forces the Offense to make a sacrifice... Break off an O-Lineman to block them, forcing 1-on-1 in the trenches, or they have to get a back or TE to cover them, which is one less person to throw the ball to. Now; I shall hide while the insults fly.

In my opinion, I think what we're looking at here is the type of defense we've always run in Washington, and the players that you need to do that. I think that Williams is getting the people he needs to get his particular program going. It's a whole new system, and not one that we've run before, to my knowledge. I think that the aggressiveness of the LB's and corners effectively eliminate the need for huge, hulking run-stoppers who do nothing but push forward. The gaps will be closed by blitzes by everybody. A few times we'll see people come better than halfway up, and then drop into coverage as the offensive play develops. Williams is a genius, and I think we can mention him in the same breath as Marvin Lewis safely. The 46 is very complicated, and there's some great breakdowns in the Football 101 forum that are well worth a peek. In short, speed + athleticism + football smarts (not blowing your assignment)= Run stopping and pass defense. The Eagles, Giants and Cowboys are not used to this in division games, and it could bode well for us if our new guys can get into it and work together.
Again, IMHO.

i'm not saying it can't be done with what we have, tc. i would just be a LOT more comfortable if we traded down and grabed udeze/smith, or wilfork/harris. i don't think we are too far off. but, we could use a stud up front, no?
and for the record, i don't doubt williams at all. he did coach the number 2 defense in the leauge last year. and he definantly has my respect. i mean for real, how many yards did we gain against buffalo last year? a total of ten maybe

Champ was a great Redskin and a feared cb until last year. Champ didn't want be here and it showed in his play (he was beat on more plays last year than anytime in his career at wash) He also missed time on the feild last year which had been unheard of in years pass. Basiclly he and Portis wanted out of their current situations and the skins and Den gave each other permission to talk to the others players the rest is history ..... Champ is still a great ex-redskin and I wish him well. Clinton is rising star in the league and I think his best is still to comw

I think it boils down to the money - I think Springs is a better buy. Do you live in a card board house and buy a 6' plasma HD-TV, surround sound speakers and Tivo? Or, do you build a house and fit all the stuff that you want within reason. Bailey cost too much. And the Broncos dove in to the mix - fixated on Bailey. Remember last year, they paid a bundle for Gardner?

Bailey represents almost 9% of the total team budget! Can they afford to get a decent D-line, LB's and a Safety? How about an O-line, RB, WR corps, fullback? Only time will tell, but this whole thing reminds me of the Sean Gilbert deal - a team pays too damn much for a player that doesn't get them enough in return. Champ better play both ways, return punts and buy the team meals... and score three TD's a game.

Of course Champ is the better corner, I mean we will be lucky if the injury prone Springs can play 8 games this year, our secondary is a big weakness this year and doesnt it unerve anybody that the 3 corners we signed Walt Harris, Brown, and Springs have all had recent major injuries???? Sean Taylor is amazing and we need all the secondary help we can get. Taylor has the potential to be the best saftey in the league for many years and people want to pass on him?? why? ohalate and bowen are not that good.
